The Daihatsu Copen is undoubtedly one of the coolest kei cars in the world. The tiny roadster with the electric steel folding roof has not only enchanted women for years, but also puts a smile on the face of every fresh air fan. The second generation of the Bonsai convertible, which unfortunately is only available in Japan, can be ordered in different versions. One of these variants is called Copen XPlay and is characterized by its robust look. We would now like to introduce you to a bizarre conversion from Japan, which is based on a 2015 model, because it is currently being offered for sale for a proud 1.698.000 Japanese yen (about €13.000) and already has 96.055 kilometers on the clock. The price quoted corresponds approximately to the new price of a current Daihatsu Copen in the basic version.
"Off-Roadster" for fun moments
The most noticeable change is this Höherlegungskit, which maximizes ground clearance in such a way that even drivers of modern SUVs become envious. On the front there is an aluminumUnderrun protection, two LED auxiliary headlights by IPF placed on the hood, red tow hooks in the grille, LED fog lights and dark tinted headlights taken from a Copen GR Sport. A large Roll bar, on which a Rotopax auxiliary tank is mounted, makes the tiny Japanese look like a vehicle from the Dakar Rally. And the rear is also bizarre, since it has a trailer hitch in addition to a sports exhaust system with two tailpipes from HKS. This can also be used to pull small trailers!
Sporty interior for the little one!
In the cockpit are next to a Sport steering wheel with momo sticker too Sport bucket seats from Recaro, which ensure a cool look in the interior. This is joined by a Momo shift knob that also looks dynamic.
A petrol-driven three-cylinder turbo provides propulsion!
660 cubic centimeters are enough for the small Japanese to generate at least 64 hp. The torque is 92 Newton meters, which means that the bonsai roadster doesn't uproot trees, but can keep up in traffic. The vehicle sprints to 11 km/h in just over 100 seconds and the propulsion ends at around 140 km/h. Power is transmitted via either a five-speed manual gearbox or a CVT automatic, with only the front wheels being driven. In this case, however, the pure front-wheel drive is a hindrance to the off-road capabilities of the curious conversion.
Our conclusion:
- On the idea of one Copen to a pseudo off-roader to rebuild, you have to come first. The vehicle is one of the craziest projects of recent times and we think the conversion was successful.
