It is a first in history: The Extreme E racing series features nine international teams around the world in five remote regions (Arctic, desert, rainforest, glacier and coast) compete against each other in fully electric bolides. For ABT CUPRA XE starts the driver duo Mattias Ekström and Claudia Hürtgen, which has just completed the last test drive before the start of the championship.

“If you put all the elements such as the low-grip tires, the heavy weight of the vehicle and the concentrated power of 400 kW, or around 544 hp, together, then this combination is almost even more difficult to tame than a wild beast“, Says Mattias Ekström. "In my opinion, the decisive factor is the size and mass of the vehicle that has to be moved here. I think the biggest challenge will be the different terrain conditions as the car will react very differently."

Adaptation to the most demanding terrain

The vehicle is equipped with a 53 kWh battery, which is installed behind the cockpit to ensure optimal weight distribution, explains Xavi Serra, Head of Technical Development at CUPRA Racing. According to Serra, the length of the battery will be different depending on the terrain. "The conditions on a circuit are very consistent, but with this multitude of different terrain profiles, it makes a big difference whether you are on asphalt or gravel. The ambient temperature is also different every time“Says Serra. "In contrast to the e-Racer, this time we focused more on performance than on energy management.“The vehicle itself, which is based on the Odyssey 21, will be the same for every team and will be fitted with 940 mm Continental tires. With a width of 2,3 meters and a height of more than 1,8 meters, it accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in just four seconds.

Successful duo

All driver teams consist of a racing driver and a racing driver. Ekström will start with the German racing driver Claudia Hürtgen. "The biggest challenge in my opinion will be to function well as a team“, Emphasizes Claudia Hürtgen. "It's all about compromises. Not everything that one driver finds right is endorsed by the other team member. It is therefore important to find the best compromise in order to be on the road as quickly as possible“, Adds Serra. A laboratory for the future All of the know-how that the team acquires in this racing series will not only benefit motorsport, but will also flow into the CUPRA series models. "We firmly believe that electrification and top performance can go hand in hand. CUPRA is headed for an electric future, so Extreme E will provide us with very valuable data“, So Serra.
