The 2022 Ford Focus ST facelift is there! Like that too normal Ford Focus and the ST-Line (Information below about contribution) the Focus ST can also benefit from the comprehensive product upgrade. The sports model developed by Ford Performance will continue to be available as a 5-door sedan or as a tournament. A powerful 2,3-liter EcoBoost turbo gasoline engine works under the bonnet. The 2,0-liter EcoBlue turbodiesel with 140 kW (190 PS), which was previously available for the sedan and for the tournament, is no longer part of the engine range for the new Ford Focus ST. The front section again plays a key role in the further development of the design: the upper and lower grille each have a honeycomb insert, plus large side air inlets, special skirts and an aerodynamically optimized spoiler and a rear wing. The standard equipment includes newly designed 18-inch aluminum rims for the ST and 19-inch for the ST X.
14-way adjustable sports seats
In the interior of the Ford Focus ST, the sport seats newly developed by Ford Performance inspire. They combined excellent lateral support with pleasant comfort - regardless of whether the Nürburgring-Nordschleife is next under the wheels or the way to work is pending. The seats are 14-way adjustable, 12-way electric and 2-way manual (thigh support). There are four adjustment options for the lumbar support alone, so that every driver should find their ideal steering wheel position. The standard seat heating rounds off the comfort.
Buyers of the new ST can continue to look forward to the 2,3-liter EcoBoost petrol engine with regard to the drive system for their compact dynamic car. This engine has an output of 206 kW (280 PS) ** and provides a maximum torque of 420 Nm (with automatic: 415 Nm). The turbocharger with modern twin-scroll technology and anti-lag system ensures fine control and a particularly sporty response. A 6-speed manual transmission is standard equipment for both model variants (sedan / tournament). In the Ford Focus ST X, the Rev-Matching technology ensures that downshifts are gentle, even when the pace is accelerated.
On request, the sedan and tournament are also available with a 7-speed automatic transmission (converter).
Other modern performance technologies such as the electronically controlled limited-slip differential, which Ford has in store for both petrol variants, guarantee additional driving pleasure. It improves handling in curves and traction when accelerating. The optionally available electronic damper control CCD (Continuously Controlled Damping) combines perfect vehicle control with comfort features that are also sufficient for longer journeys. The system reevaluates the data from the steering and brakes, the chassis and the body movements every two milliseconds and adjusts the adjustable dampers accordingly.
2022 Ford Focus ST: two equipment versions
The Ford Focus ST is available in two equipment versions: the ST (sales price from 36.500 euros) and the ST X (sales price: from 39.400 euros - each as a 5-door sedan with 6-speed manual transmission). With the “X”, adaptive LED matrix headlights and 19-inch light-alloy wheels are also part of the standard equipment, as is the “race track” driving mode that can also be selected. With tighter damper characteristics, a more immediate response of the steering and the accelerator pedal as well as more tolerant degrees of freedom of the ESC system, the ST X offers very direct contact between driver and road - so it is predestined for a lot of fun on closed off roads in the "racetrack" setting Circuits.
Info: the 2022 Focus series & ST-Line
The entire Ford Focus series has been given a comprehensive upgrade: the globally successful series from the compact mid-range is getting off to a new start with fresh momentum and an even sharper design, state-of-the-art assistance and connectivity functions and many practical improvements. The focus of the facelift, which applies equally to the 5-door sedan and the Kombi version Tournament, is primarily improvements that make the stay on board even more pleasant, comfortable and safe for the driver and his passengers. This starts with the equipment lines, which now differ more clearly from each other in terms of appearance and content, and extends through the latest generation of the Ford SYNC 4 communication and entertainment system to practical, intelligent solutions for the luggage compartment of the tournament version.
More than ever before, the focus is on people. This is reflected not least in the different equipment variants: The new Ford Focus is available in the equipment versions Cool & Connect, Titanium, Active and ST-Line, whereby for the Titanium, for the crossover variant Active and for the ST-Line respectively the upgrades "X" and "Vignale" are still available. The new positioning looks like this:
- The Titanium / Titanium X and Titanium Vignale versions combine maximum comfort with an elegant appearance ("For connoisseurs").
- The versions Active / Active X and Active Vignale feel just as comfortable off-road as they do on the road (“For adventurers”).
- The versions ST-Line / ST-Line X and ST-Line Vignale look sporty inside and out and also ride like that ("For athletes").
The starting price is 22.450 euros for the sedan or 23.650 euros for the tournament (both petrol, equipment version Cool & Connect).
The new Ford SYNC 4 connectivity system celebrated its European premiere in the battery-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E. In the new Ford Focus, the Ford SYNC 4 connectivity system includes the Ford navigation system with AppLink, 13,2-inch touchscreen (screen diagonal: 33 centimeters) and radio section with DAB / DAB + (Digital Audio Broadcasting). It relies on the advantages of cloud-based navigation1) and a networked voice control system that understands normally spoken commands. The now 13,2-inch (instead of the previous eight-inch) touchscreen in landscape format above the center console is new. The Ford SYNC 4 system is characterized by an intuitive menu structure and a large number of advanced functions.
In terms of assistance technologies, the Ford Focus comes up with an even more comprehensive range. The Blind Spot Assist, for example, can now actively influence the driver by means of targeted steering impulses in order to prevent a risky lane change if another road user is in the difficult-to-see area at an angle behind the vehicle or is approaching. In conjunction with the "Trailer Detection" function, the Blind Spot Assistant extends this precautionary measure even over the full length of a trailer when the Ford Focus is used as a towing vehicle.
In future, the EcoBoost hybrid models with 48 volt technology will have more choice: Ford continues to offer the two mild hybrid variants (MHEV) with an output of 92 kW (125 PS) and 114 kW (155 PS) - but now also in conjunction with a 7-speed Ford PowerShift automatic transmission. This dual-clutch transmission is particularly impressive in slow-moving traffic thanks to its great ease of use, while in combination with the additional thrust of the electric generator it also increases driving pleasure.
Small but fine improvements make the 1.653 liter trunk of the Ford Focus Tournament even more practical. They are based on suggestions from customers and relate, for example, to a special mat on which damp and dirty objects or textiles can be transported without leaving any permanent traces. The flooring and side panels are easier to clean. At the same time, a vertical stowage system effectively keeps the luggage compartment tidy.
Ford Focus ST also revised
The Ford Focus ST developed by Ford Performance also impresses with a new look. Among other things, it benefits from sporty design elements, attractive light alloy wheels, the exclusive Mean Green Metallic body color and new, 14-way adjustable Ford Performance sports seats developed by Ford itself. The sporty top model of the Ford Focus series is, as before, available as a 5-door sedan and in the Kombi version Tournament - as a 2,3-liter EcoBoost turbo gasoline engine with either a 6-speed manual gearbox or with a 7-speed automatic transmission (converter). The EcoBlue turbodiesel with 140 kW (190 PS), which was previously also available for sedans and tournaments, is no longer available. Sales prices: from 36.500 euros (Ford Focus ST, 5-door sedan) or from 37.700 euros (Ford Focus ST, tournament).
The new Ford Focus in detail
The design: modern, fresh and young: “Human Centric” is the name of the design philosophy that gives the comprehensively upgraded Ford Focus an independent appearance and the various equipment lines with precisely defined characters. The central design element is the modified shape of the bonnet. It gives the front end more height and a greater presence across all equipment versions - an effect that the brand logo also emphasizes: The “Blue Oval” from Ford moves from the front edge of the bonnet centrally into the upper radiator grille.
The LED front headlights with integrated fog lights inspire the dynamic vehicle design with their elongated shape and are also appealing thanks to their unmistakable light signature. From the Titanium line onwards, they look even more elegant with their darkened background. The upscale equipment lines are also characterized by special LED taillights with a darkened middle section.
Each equipment version with special design features
Each equipment line of the new Ford Focus now benefits from special design elements that give it its own personality within the series. The most important distinguishing feature is the radiator grille. The entry-level version Cool & Connect, for example, has a wide, chrome-framed radiator grille and side air inlets that are oriented upwards and extend from the lower radiator grille. The Ford Focus Titanium stands out from this with cross struts in the upper radiator grille, which have a chromated hot stamping.
The visual design of the ST-Line is based on the top athlete ST and relies on an individually proportioned trapezoidal radiator grille with a black honeycomb insert. It is flanked by wider side air intakes and a deeper lower grille. There are also side sill panels and a striking diffuser element.
The Active makes it clear with its robust crossover design that it is the model variant that likes to get its tires dirty. More massive vertical struts characterize its upper radiator grille, while the lower one has a greater spatial depth. The side ventilation openings are slightly wider and thus underline the visual effect of the chassis with increased ground clearance. Dark protective elements for the body round off the striking appearance.
In addition to the “X” packages for the Titanium, Active and ST-Line equipment lines, Ford Focus customers can also opt for the exclusive “Vignale” option for these three equipment versions. "Vignale" includes exclusive features and interior materials that create a premium ambience, in particular with satin surfaces and chrome elements. There are also specially designed light alloy wheels.
Ford Focus Hybrid now also with 7-speed Ford PowerShift automatic transmission
The wide range of engine-transmission variants for the redesigned Ford Focus also includes electrified drives. They convince with further improved fuel efficiency and great smoothness, but also stand for driving pleasure, for which this model family has been known for more than 20 years.
The most important novelty: The Ford Focus EcoBoost Hybrid (MHEV - 48-volt mild hybrid technology) is now also available with a 7-speed Ford PowerShift automatic transmission, for both power levels (92 kW / 125 PS and 114 kW / 155 hp). This dual clutch transmission enables jerk-free acceleration with almost imperceptible gear changes. When there is a high demand for performance - for example when overtaking - it can downshift up to three gears at once. In the "Sport" driving mode, higher engine speeds are activated for spontaneous response. If you like, you can also choose the individual courses manually. The ST-Line has shift paddles on the steering wheel ready for this.
In addition to the sporty aspects, the combination of the EcoBoost-Mild Hybrid engine and the 7-speed Ford PowerShift automatic transmission also supports consumption-optimized journeys: It always keeps the petrol engine in the most efficient speed range. In conjunction with the standard-fit automated start-stop system, the engine switches off when the vehicle is stopped at a speed of 12 km / h - this, too, saves fuel.
The EcoBoost petrol engine ...
The Ford Focus EcoBoost Hybrid combines a 1,0 liter three-cylinder turbo gasoline engine with a belt-driven BISG starter generator (Belt-driven Integrated Starter / Generator). The BISG is used instead of a conventional alternator and converts kinetic energy, which would be uselessly dissipated as heat when braking or coasting the car, into electricity. The BISG uses this to feed a special lithium-ion battery. In return, the BISG can also step in as a drive and support the petrol engine in the acceleration phase with additional torque or relieve it when rolling. The EcoBoost hybrid drive is available in two output levels: 92 kW (125 PS) * and 114 kW (155 PS).
The multi-award-winning EcoBoost three-cylinder with a displacement of one liter drives the Ford Focus even without a mild hybrid system. Then it is 74 kW (100 PS) * or 92 kW (125 PS) *, but relies on the same modern design with direct petrol injection and two variably controllable Ti-VCT camshafts (Twin-independent Variable Cam Timing). With its specially balanced flywheel, the crankshaft ensures extremely smooth running.
... and the EcoBlue diesel
The Ford Focus with its modern EcoBlue diesel engine continues to be particularly suitable for frequent drivers. The 1,5-liter four-cylinder has an output of 88 kW (120 PS) *, the 2,0-liter variant with 110 kW (150 PS) that was also previously available is no longer part of the engine range for the new Ford Focus.
The 1,5-liter engine (120 hp) is available with a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic transmission (converter). With an integrated intake manifold, a friction-optimized turbo system and high-pressure direct injection, which uses a particularly efficient combustion process to reduce exhaust emissions, they represent the state of the art.
Three driving programs
The Ford Focus driver can choose between three driving programs: "Normal", "Sport" and "Eco". Depending on the driving mode, the response behavior of the accelerator pedal, the electro-mechanical EPAS power steering (Electronic Power Assisted Steering) and the automatic transmission (if available) are adapted. The Active models also offer the two settings "Slippery" and "Unpaved road".
The Ford SYNC 4 system
In terms of comfort and safety technologies, the new Ford Focus combines the company's latest developments and offers customers an above-average pleasant and relaxed travel experience. This becomes particularly clear at one point: the fourth generation of the Ford SYNC communication and entertainment system including Ford navigation system with AppLink, 13,2-inch touchscreen (screen diagonal: 33 centimeters) and DAB / DAB +. The Ford SYNC 4 connectivity system is part of the standard equipment for all equipment versions except for Cool & Connect and, among other things, relies on self-learning algorithms that adapt to the driver's habits and thus always offer suitable suggestions and search results.
Speech recognition is an important element in this. Ford SYNC 4 understands instructions spoken in full sentences in 15 different European languages. Via the FordPass Connect modem2) the system can react quickly and accurately to questions and requests from the user - regardless of whether it is about the on-board entertainment offer, calls, text messages, the function of the air conditioning system or weather forecasts along the route.
The connected Ford navigation system provides up-to-date traffic information, the most efficient route guidance and accurate predictions of where there is a risk of traffic jams on the route. It uses data from TomTom and cloud services1) from Garmin, but also takes into account current information on special weather events that could be lurking on the Ford Focus en route or at the destination. Three-dimensional maps also make it easier to drive through larger cities and find parking spaces.
The 13,2-inch touchscreen
In general: the newly developed touchscreen of the Ford Focus. With a screen diagonal of 13,2 instead of the previous eight inches, the rectangular color monitor positioned in landscape format above the center console has grown significantly. Its menu structure is designed so intuitively that every function or information can be reached with one or a maximum of two touches. The touchscreen also controls the air conditioning. Corresponding physical switches or rotary knobs are not required. Result: a harmonious, driver-friendly design of the dashboard.
Fears that the control systems of the new Ford Focus will become obsolete at some point have also largely been banished: Software updates can be continuously installed via Ford Power-Up to keep the Ford SYNC 4 system up to date. This happens over the air (OTA) imperceptibly in the background or at set times. The driver does not have to be active at all or only to a small extent.
The FordPass app also provides numerous networked services that can also be controlled remotely using a smartphone. This includes, for example, querying the vehicle status (tank content / oil change interval) or remotely starting the engine in vehicles with automatic transmissions. The SecuriAlert system from Ford ensures that the owner sleeps peacefully: It detects any attempt to break into the car without authorization and immediately sends alarm signals to the smartphone. This applies even if a key is used for this.
The adaptive LED matrix headlights
On request, adaptive LED matrix headlights with automatic headlight range adjustment are available for all equipment versions except for Cool & Connect. They enable a whole range of interesting functions:
- Glare-free high beam thanks to the high beam assistant saves oncoming or preceding road users from the light cone and thus prevents their view from being obstructed. At the same time, the Ford Focus driver benefits longer and more often from the security of optimal street lighting.
- The camera-based dynamic LED matrix cornering light uses information from the front camera to recognize when the car is approaching bends and illuminates the inside of the bend more intensely in the dark. In this way, the driver has a better overview and recognizes pedestrians or cyclists who are there earlier.
- The static LED cornering light including maneuvering and bad weather light adapts the light cone to adverse weather conditions as soon as the windshield wipers are switched on.
- The traffic sign-based low beam uses the signals from the traffic sign recognition system to recognize when your own car is approaching an intersection, a junction or a roundabout. In this case, it widens the light cone in the dark in order to make pedestrians or cyclists visible earlier who might want to cross the street.
The driver assistance systems
The current Ford Focus generation was able to come up with a remarkably extensive list of safety and driver assistance systems when it premiered in 2018. Now some new functions have been added and existing ones have been expanded again.
- This applies, for example, to the Blind Spot Assist with CrossTraffic Alert including emergency braking function when reversing out of a parking space. At speeds between 65 and 200 km / h, the system scans the area next to and up to 20 meters behind the vehicle 28 times per second, which the driver can hardly see or only with difficulty. If there are other road users there or if they are approaching, the system indicates this by means of appropriate warning signals. What is new is that the Blind Spot Assistant can now actively counteract this by steering intervention if there is a risk of collision when changing lanes.
- Also new: the system extension to include the "trailer detection" function on Ford Focus models with a trailer coupling. If the car picks up a caravan, for example, the driver can enter the length of the trailer combination via the touchscreen of the Ford SYNC 4 system and the blind spot assistant expands its sensor range accordingly.
- The local hazard warning system (Local Hazard Information) warns of a potential accident risk, even in places that are not yet visible to the driver due to a curve or other visual obstructions.
Another helpful driver assistance system (for vehicles with automatic transmission) is the Ford Intelligent Drive Assist - i.e. a partially automated driver assistance system, consisting of an adaptive intelligent cruise control system, lane pilot, traffic jam assistant with Stop & Go function and a traffic sign recognition system . And the Active Parking Assist Plus with partially automated vehicle guidance (parking and exit functions) for the versions with automatic transmission controls not only the steering but also the gear selection and the accelerator and brake pedals when parking - at the push of a button.
Ford Focus Tournament: Even more practical details
The adjustable trunk floor of the Ford Focus Tournament now has a fold in the middle that allows it to be folded up or set up on one side at a 90-degree angle. This creates a vertical partition between two separate areas in order to keep objects in place even more securely.
An additional coated area below the load compartment floor is ideal for transporting damp or wet objects and textiles such as tools, sportswear or umbrellas. The water-repellent mat can be easily removed for cleaning or drying. At the same time, the loading floor partition described above prevents dry and wet transport goods from coming into contact with one another.
New in the trunk of the Ford Focus Tournament is a kind of instruction manual. Because: A survey by Ford has shown that 98 percent of the tournament drivers are not or only insufficiently familiar with many practical options of the luggage compartment, such as the separate storage compartment for the load compartment cover, the remote unlocking for the folding rear seats or the cargo securing mechanisms. Clear symbols and representations now point out the numerous functions in the freight compartment, making it unnecessary to look at the corresponding chapter of the operating instructions.
