The Ford Mustang has electrified its fans around the globe for 56 years now. Now the famous “pony car” is ready for the electrified future: With the new Mustang Mach-E, a 5-door crossover SUV, the group is presenting a purely electrically powered model variant. It is shaped by the same yearning for freedom, progress and superb driving performance as the legendary sports car that came onto the market in 1964. The 4,71 meter long, 1,88 meter wide and 1,62 meter high Mustang Mach-E transforms these ideals to a new level. This is reflected, for example, in the WLTP range of up to 610 kilometers as well as the standard quick charging option with direct current and a maximum charging power of 150 kW. The top speed of the Mustang Mach-E is limited to 180 km / h.

In addition, the electric vehicle impresses with its high level of comfort and numerous modern driver assistance systems. Space for five adults
Characteristic design elements such as the long, powerfully drawn front hood and the distinctive rear section with the typical three-part rear lights identify the Mustang Mach-E as a worthy new member of the Mustang family. The Mach-E is based on a vehicle architecture that the Ford team "Edison" developed from scratch for purely electric automobiles. Thanks to the space-saving arrangement of the batteries in the floor pan between the axles, it enables a clever floor plan. The result is a Mustang with the dimensions of an SUV, which allows five adults, including those in the rear, to stay comfortably on board, while at the same time not losing sight of their luggage. So there is a loading volume of 402 liters. If the rear seats are folded forward, it increases to up to 1.420 liters. An additional 81 liters are available in the front trunk under the “bonnet”. This Ford MegaBox is washable, has a water drain and is therefore particularly suitable for wet sportswear, muddy hiking boots or sandy beach equipment.
The ten speakers of the B&O2 Sound systems with an output power of 560 watts fit seamlessly into the dashboard like a soundbar and float above the air vents - a design that won the iF Design Award. The fold-up central armrest also seems to float between the front seats and keeps wallets just as safe as smaller bags. As a typical Mustang design element, the double paneling of the dashboard rounds off the interior design. Even the panorama glass roof keeps a special secret: Thanks to special coatings, it keeps infrared and ultra-violet radiation away. This ensures a cooler passenger compartment in summer and a warmer passenger compartment in cold winter.
Mustang Mach-E can be configured individually
The Mustang Mach-E can be individually configured using the new “FordPass Remote Vehicle Equipment” function. To do this, the users of the vehicle simply create a personalized profile and save their preferred settings there, such as frequently visited locations or nearby charging stations. You can also select departure times depending on the day of the week or settings in the Mach-E cockpit such as the interior temperature. The Mach-E's driving modes can also be personalized. All of this information can be provided either online or on a smartphone using the FordPass app3 be determined. They are stored in the cloud.
If a registered driver reaches for the vehicle key and couples his smartphone with the Mach-E for the first time, all settings are transferred to the vehicle. Annoying and time-consuming start configurations are a thing of the past - the driver simply gets in and drives off.

Two differently strong drive units, rear and all-wheel drive
The purely electric crossover SUV is available with rear (electric motor) and all-wheel drive (dual electric motor). Depending on the battery capacity, there are two power levels to choose from with an actually usable (= net) battery capacity of 68 kWh and 88 kWh. This corresponds to a gross battery capacity of 75,7 or 98,7 kWh. The power consumption of the Mustang Mach-E is between 19,5 and 16,5 kilowatt hours per 100 kilometers, depending on the version.
The standard version (Standard Range) has 288 lithium-ion cells and a usable storage capacity of 68 kilowatt hours (kWh) - enough for a range in the combined WLTP cycle1 of up to 440 kilometers. In combination with the optional Extended Range variant with 88 kWh usable capacity and 376 cells, the rear-wheel drive model can travel up to 610 kilometers in the combined WLTP cycle1 before it has to wire itself back to an electrical outlet.
The high-performance batteries passed a demanding test program in which they had to withstand extreme temperatures of up to minus 40 degrees Celsius, among other things. A waterproof and shockproof battery box with a special crash structure protects it from moisture and external damage. At the same time, an active liquid cooling and heating system ensures a balanced heat balance even in extreme weather. This enables both shorter loading times and a consistently high level of performance even at high speeds.
In the versions with rear-wheel drive, a newly developed, oil-cooled AC motor is responsible for transmitting power to the rear wheels. The permanently excited synchronous unit provides its maximum torque with almost no delay. The result: the Ford Mustang Mach-E reacts extremely spontaneously to “gas” pedal commands.
Newly developed all-wheel drive
In the all-wheel drive models, an additional, permanent dual electric motor is used on the front axle, which drives the front wheels. The powertrain control module regulates the torque distribution between the front and rear axles independently of one another. It depends on many parameters - primarily the acceleration, the ESP signal (slip) and the speed. The result is excellent traction and very sporty self-steering behavior.
"The balanced weight distribution and the quick response of the electrical architecture have enabled us to maximize driving pleasure on every type of road - be it on the serpentine route in the Alps, be it on German motorways or be it on British country roads," emphasizes Geert Van Noyen, Head of Vehicle Dynamics at Ford Europe.
"Intelligent Range" for calculating the current radius of action
A particularly practical feature of the Mustang Mach-E is the “Intelligent Range” function. It is networked with the on-board navigation system and enables precise calculation of the current operating range. The system takes into account the previous driver behavior as well as external factors such as the weather forecast. The navigation system guides you to the destination on the fastest route using real-time traffic data from TomTom. Alternatively, the driver can choose the most efficient route using the integrated, cloud-based Garmin route guidance5.
The latest, fourth generation of the Ford SYNC communication and entertainment system also offers the option of planning journeys in advance on a smartphone and then planning the route via the FordPass app3 to be transmitted to the vehicle. Last but not least, Ford SYNC suggests suitable charging stations along the route. It provides real-time information about both the current electricity prices and the availability of the respective charging stations.
“Intelligent Range” also uses the cloud connection to evaluate the expected energy consumption for future journeys. In addition, crowdsourcing data from other networked Ford electric vehicles can significantly improve the accuracy of the range forecast, provided their owners have consented to the transmission of driving data.
On request: the Ford Connected Wallbox with a 7,5 meter long charging cable
Ford offers customers who opt for a fully electric or plug-in hybrid model of the brand, a Ford Connected Wallbox on request. The company Alpiq is responsible for their installation in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The wall-mounted charger is available in 7,4 kW and 11 kW power levels and can charge the battery of the Mustang Mach-E, for example, from ten to 80 percent in around six hours1. The wall boxes are weatherproof and are therefore also suitable for outdoor installation. A 7,5 meter long charging cable is included.
Buyers of the Mustang Mach-E receive two charging cables as standard: The six-meter-long Mode 3 cable is suitable for public AC charging stations with a type 2 connection. In addition, there is a 6,7 meter long home charging cable with which the owners can charge their Mach-E even without a Ford Connected Wallbox, both at a standard household socket and at a blue CEE connection.
Ford Connected Wallbox users can monitor and control them from their smartphones using the FordPass app. For example, the current charge status of the vehicle can be checked using an app.
FordPass charging network: easy charging
On the way, the Mustang Mach-E's navigation system indicates current charging options along the route. This takes the wind out of the sails of the worry of a dead battery. The FordPass Connect modem4 and the FordPass app, in cooperation with the provider NewMotion, provide free access to the FordPass charging network. With 50.000 new stations since October 2019, it is one of the largest networks for public charging points in Europe. Thanks to the partnership with NewMotion, Ford customers can easily find one of the 175.000+ charging stations in 21 European countries with just one customer account, navigate to them, charge their car, pay for it and, if necessary, monitor the charging process remotely.
Free access to the IONITY charging network and reduced tariff for Ford customers
In addition, users of an electric or a plug-in hybrid model from Ford have 400 HPC fast charging stations (HPC = High Power Charging) with almost 2.400 charging points at their disposal. This will be set up by the IONITY consortium - of which Ford is one of the founding members and partners - along European trunk roads by the end of 2020. The distance between the individual charging stations should be a maximum of 120 kilometers.
In addition to free access to the IONITY fast charging network, Ford customers also receive a reduced tariff for the first year: Instead of the normal price of 0,79 euros / kWh, they only pay 0,31 euros per kWh including VAT. This applies to all customers who “refuel” their electrified Ford at an IONITY charging point in Germany.
"Refuel" an additional range of 119 kilometers in ten minutes
The Mustang Mach-E can use a charging power of up to 150 kW at IONITY and other HPC charging points, thereby significantly reducing charging times. The model with extended range battery and rear-wheel drive takes an average of ten minutes for an additional range of 119 kilometers1. The versions with all-wheel drive and extended range battery as well as the First Edition “fill up” with electricity for around 107 kilometers in the same period1. The following applies to both the rear-wheel drive variant and the Mustang Mach-E with all-wheel drive in conjunction with the extended range battery: The battery can be charged from ten to 45 percent in 80 minutes at a quick charging station.
“The new Mustang Mach-E shows what a battery-electric drive can do,” explains Stuart Rowley, President of Ford Europe. “But performance alone is useless if the drivers do not have full confidence in the suitability of their car for everyday use. With our charging initiatives, Mustang Mach-E buyers can start their journey carefree, because they know that they can quickly and easily recharge their batteries anywhere in Europe. "
"One-pedal driving" for more range
The Ford Mustang Mach-E offers the possibility of increasing the range with the help of what is known as “one-pedal driving”. Background: Instead of pressing the brake pedal, thanks to the recuperation delay, in most cases it is sufficient to take your foot off the "accelerator pedal". The kinetic energy gained is fed back into the battery as electricity. If necessary, the driver can also press the brake pedal at any time.
New Ford SYNC generation for the individual adaptation of 80 vehicle functions
At the same time as the new Mustang Mach-E, the fourth generation of the Ford SYNC communications and entertainment system is also making its debut. It has twice as high a computer speed as the current SYNC 3 system - access to navigation, music and connectivity functions is correspondingly faster. Its clear and modern user interface is adaptive and can therefore quickly adapt to the driver's special preferences.
Updates can be uploaded wirelessly via secure OTA data transmission. This will make the system better and better over time. The basis is provided by a 15,5-inch, portrait-format touchscreen with a screen diagonal of 39 centimeters, which can be easily operated like a smartphone using swiping and swiping movements and makes complicated menu navigation unnecessary. The digital, horizontally installed 10,2-inch instrument panel measures 26 centimeters diagonally. In the Mach-E, the new Ford SYNC version enables the individual adjustment of more than 80 vehicle functions - starting with the interior temperature and the seating position up to the ambient lighting.
Smartphones and other end devices compatible with the Ford SYNC system dock wirelessly via Apple CarPlay2Android Auto2 and AppLink. Customers can use and control popular apps conveniently and securely. Ford SYNC 4 speech recognition understands commands in 15 European languages from the conversation. The Ford SYNC system actively adapts to the user. In order to optimally implement voice commands, the system uses both the stored recognition patterns and the results of Internet searches via the standard FordPass Connect modem. In addition, the Mustang Mach-E offers the option of inductive charging of smartphones ex works.
“During development, the main focus for us was on making the driving experience as individual and networked as possible,” explains Jan Schroll, Connectivity Manager at Ford of Europe. “The next generation Ford SYNC is the most advanced and intelligent version of our voice-controlled communication and entertainment system to date. New technology "digital key"
Also new and practical is the “digital key” technology, which Ford is introducing in its model range for the first time on board the Mustang Mach-E. If the car detects via Bluetooth that the driver's authorized mobile device is approaching, it unlocks the doors. Even to start the car, you don't have to pick up a smartphone or a key. The Mustang Mach-E can also be opened with a PIN using a number field in the B-pillar. And with a separate PIN code that is entered on the central touchscreen, the car is also ready to drive. Conventional door handles could therefore be dispensed with.
Three driving modes for individual driving pleasure
The Mustang Mach-E also adjusts to its driver when driving. With the three standard driving modes "Whisper", "Active" and "Untamed" ("Tame", "Active" and "Temperamental") every Mach-E driver will find a pace that suits his current mood. The driving modes can be set individually via the touchscreen and combine tailor-made dynamic properties with a special sensory and acoustic experience. This ranges from finely tuned feedback, for example from the steering, to the ambient lighting, to authentically composed “engine” sound effects and the animation of the controls.
The "Tame" mode switches to a smoother steering, a restrained characteristic of the "accelerator pedal" and an interior that is as quiet as possible. This is the most relaxed way to experience the Mustang Mach-E. The "Tame" mode also optimizes the braking traction control, which ensures optimum grip on wet and slippery roads and also relieves the driver.
The “active” mode allows the calm, unexcited side of electric driving as well as the agile start at any time and is therefore suitable for practically every everyday situation. If EcoMode, which is designed for maximum energy efficiency, intervenes, this is displayed on the digital instrument cluster and the multicolor LEDs of the ambient lighting bathe the interior in a subtle shade of blue.
If the driver wants to explore the full performance potential of the Mustang Mach-E, he chooses "Temperamental". This mode tightens the steering, allows the "accelerator pedal" to respond more directly and gives the feeling of a sporty downshift when decelerating. The distinctive, artificially generated "engine" sound in the interior, the sporty orange lighting and the dynamic lines on the driver's display, which graphically depict all acceleration and deceleration forces, go well with this.
“With the Mustang Mach-E, we took the opportunity to tailor the driving experience as needed. This means that every driver can choose exactly the vehicle characteristics they want - depending on how they feel. This makes the car a companion that reacts to the mood, ”explains Matthias Tonn, Senior Program Engineer for the Mustang Mach-E in Europe. "The individual settings don't even differ very much from mode to mode - but the overall effect is exactly how you want it."
Modern driver assistance systems offer a high level of comfort and exemplary safety
The driver assistance systems of the Mustang Mach-E make driving relaxed and safe. The following technologies are available, among others:
- The intelligent adaptive cruise control system with stop & go function and lane pilot automatically maintains the selected distance to the car in front and helps the driver to stay in the middle of the lane with his Mach-E. In a traffic jam, the system can stop the vehicle and let it start again automatically.
- The Active Parking Assist with parking and exit functions and partially automated vehicle guidance detects sufficiently large parking spaces in the longitudinal and transverse directions and maneuvers the car into them - the driver only has to press a button.
- Pre-Collision Assist with Emergency Brake Assist detects potential collisions with other vehicles, cyclists or pedestrians and helps to avoid these situations. If the driver does not respond to warning signals, the system automatically applies the brakes.
The Lane Assistant with Blind Spot Assistant observes the traffic behind you. If there is a risk of an intended lane change, the system actively intervenes in the steering to warn the driver.
