M-Sport & Ford cooperation: Ford Puma Rally1 Hybrid

From the 2022 season, the M-Sport Ford World Rally Team (WRT) will be using the Ford Puma Hybrid * as the basis for its involvement in the World Rally Championship. A first prototype of the all-wheel drive "Puma Rally1" with a 1,6 liter turbo engine and innovative plug-in hybrid system with 100 kW (136 PS) additional power and 3,9 kilowatt hours (kWh) battery capacity celebrates today as part of the Goodwood Festival of Speed had its world premiere in Great Britain. The new Puma Rally1 will take part in the famous Monte Carlo Rally for the first time in January 2022. The new rally vehicle replaces the successful Ford Fiesta WRC (World Rally Car), which has won three world championship titles since 2017. Ford has been working with M-Sport in the World Rally Championship since 1997. The partnership is responsible for a total of seven world championship titles and more than 1.500 best times in special stages.

Ford is setting a new course in two ways with the Puma Rally1. On the one hand, the crossover model fits perfectly with the basic characteristics of rally sport - many world championship races take place on unpaved, sometimes very rough roads. Recently, the World Rally Championship even made its comeback on the brutal sand tracks of the famous “Safari” in Kenya.

On the other hand, the Puma Rally1 also reflects Ford's commitment to electrifying its product range. As early as 2026, the manufacturer plans to add a zero-emission alternative to its range in every car series by introducing purely electrically powered vehicles or plug-in hybrid models. The complete switch to electromobility is planned for 2030.

"Ford is 100 percent committed to the electric future of mobility," explains Mark Rushbrook, Director of Ford Performance responsible for the manufacturer's global motorsport activities. “Under the relentless pressure of competition to succeed, we have always developed many innovations that subsequently benefited our series models. Now the Puma Rally1 from M-Sport Ford will put the hybrid technology to the ultimate test and prove that this drive philosophy enables fascinating performance. "

With the Puma Rally1 from M-Sport, Ford will compete in the top class of the World Rally Championship for at least three more years. The plug-in hybrid drive is used on connecting stages and with emission-free travel through towns or in the service park, but it literally increases the excitement even in competition: the drivers can drive several times for three seconds each on the special stages Activate an additional electrical boost of 100 kW (136 PS) - an option that also opens up interesting new fields of activity for rally strategists from a tactical point of view.

The underlying technology recovers energy that would otherwise be wasted when the vehicle brakes or rolls, and stores it in a battery. There it is available to an electric motor, which steps in either to reduce consumption or to increase performance. There is also the option of charging the Puma Rally1 as well as the Ford Kuga Plug-In-Hybrid (PHEV) at an external socket. In the World Rally Championship service park, 3,9 minutes are expected to be sufficient for a complete battery charge of 25 kWh - the duration of a normal repair and maintenance stop.

A special housing protects the air- and water-cooled battery, which has to withstand high acceleration and centrifugal forces, from damage in the event of an accident. The hybrid system weighs a total of 95 kilograms. The new fuel, which will be used in the World Rally Championship from 2022, also pays into the account of the ecological balance: It consists entirely of synthetic and bio-based input materials and is therefore 100 percent sustainable.

"The new generation of vehicles brings with it one of the greatest technological upheavals for the premier league of rally sport - the introduction of hybrid systems gives us the most powerful rally cars of all time," emphasizes Malcolm Wilson, Managing Director of M-Sport . “It reflects the drive technology of modern road vehicles. The new Ford Puma Rally1 looks just fantastic. We're very excited to unveil it at the iconic Goodwood Festival of Speed. All of us at M-Sport are determined to make our long-term partnership with Ford a success again in the future with corresponding results. We want to fight together on the front lines in this new and exciting era of rallying. "

* Consumption values according to § 2 Nos. 5, 6, 6a Pkw-EnVKV in the current constitution: data not available The legislature is working on an amendment to the Pkw-EnVKV and in the meantime recommends the specification of the more realistic WLTP values for vehicles that can no longer be homologated on the basis of the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC).

Consumption values of the Ford Puma according to WLTP (combined): Fuel consumption: 6,4-4,5 l / 100 km; CO2- Emissions (combined): 145-119 g / km.

Since September 1, 2017, certain new vehicles have been tested using the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP), a new, more realistic test procedure for measuring fuel consumption and CO2Emissions, type-approved. Since September 1, 2018, the WLTP has replaced the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), the previous test procedure. Because of the more realistic test conditions, the fuel consumption and CO2- Emission values are in many cases higher than those measured according to the NEDC. The specified values for this vehicle type were determined using the new WLTP test cycle. Please note that for CO2-Emission-based taxes or charges since September 1, 2018, the values determined according to WLTP have been used as the basis for calculation.
