Info: This is a one-off that will definitely not go into series production! The Honda CR-V Hybrid Racer is more or less a rolling test balloon for a new hybrid powertrain that will debut in the North American IndyCar Series in 2024. The engineers at Honda Performance Development (HPD) were in charge of this project. A small series is out of the question, but you can see the very special cars at selected IndyCar events in North America. We would now like to introduce the vehicle to you.

Custom conversion on a racing car basis!

Underneath the SUV shell is a genuine carbon fiber racing car monocoque, and the prominent fender flares as well as the scissor doors in McLaren style give the once so homely SUV a large portion of racing flair. The fact that the upper half of the body was largely taken over from the production CR-V is astonishing, since in terms of design it hardly has anything in common with the production model. It is mainly the upper rear section of the body that holds big surprises, because the entire rear half of the car can be folded up like a Le Mans racer to reveal a view of the hybrid drive located at the rear.

The gigantic rear wing in Pikes Peak style and the shrill foiling and the nine-spoke aluminum rims in 20-inch format with a red finish cause a stir even when stationary. In addition to the carbon fiber monocoque, the 14-inch rear brake discs, the Dallara IR 18 Indy wheel suspension at the rear or the 15-inch brake discs from the Honda NSX GT-3 racing car on the front axle are important for racing. In addition, tires in the 285/35 ZR20 format are used at the front, while thick rollers in the 305/35 ZR20 format do their job at the rear.

A 2,2-liter V6 hybrid delivers powerful power!

At the rear of the racing SUV is a new hybrid V6 that can run on Shell RaceFuel made from 100% renewable energy. The racing power unit, which will celebrate its debut in the 2024 season in the IndyCar series, has tremendous power 800 PS. Instead of batteries, the vehicle has a KERS system for the recovery and storage of kinetic energy, as known from Formula 1 cars and as it will probably also be found in future Lamborghini road sports cars. So far, however, there is no information on the performance and top speed.

Our conclusion:

  • A cool test balloon that the engineers at HPD put on the wheels. We would also like to see such an SUV as a (limited) series model. If we get more information, there is of course an update for this report. You will be informed about this if you simply use our Feed subscribe to. Have fun watching the pictures and stay true to us!
