It is not for nothing that the Jeep® Wrangler has had the iconic reputation of being able to overcome almost any obstacle thanks to the right technology. That is the real strength of a brand that can fall back on 80 years of knowledge and innovations. Today the technical evolution of Jeep continues with the 4xe models. The volume models Renegade and Compass were first introduced with a plug-in hybrid drive, and consequently the icon of the brand, the Wrangler, is now following. The hero of the new electrification adventure at Jeep is the new Wrangler Unlimited 4xe plug-in hybrid, the most powerful, efficient, environmentally responsible and technically advanced Wrangler ever introduced in Europe.

Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4xe: electric off-road!

In 1941, the legendary Willys MA / MB, the first vehicles called Jeeps in the world, brought the concept of 4 × 4 drive in a light and manoeuvrable vehicle - and the idea that such a vehicle can cope with any terrain and achieve anything. The Wrangler has inherited this legacy and has accompanied the history of the brand since its birth, embodying and developing its values - above all the value of freedom, which the Willys MB once stood for and which it still stands for today like no other vehicle in the world .

As a legacy of the first Jeep, the Wrangler Unlimited 4xe combines the best of 4 × 4 and electric, securing its iconic status within the brand portfolio. At the same time, it is a further step towards a conscious and sustainable future. And all while proving that off-road can be environmentally responsible, emotion efficient and electric driving fun. The 4xe technology makes it possible to make daily trips in the city fully electric, to enjoy an efficient and fun driving experience on the road, and to benefit from improved performance off-road with almost no noise.

With its design accents in electric blue, the new Wrangler Unlimited 4xe plug-in hybrid is the combination of the latest technology with an authentic Jeep spirit. Its electrification enhances its legendary capabilities and fully appeals even to off-road enthusiasts. At the same time, it is the solution for everyone who is looking for an off-road vehicle for everyday use and wants to bring fun and environmental responsibility together as closely as possible.

Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4xe: electric off-road!

The result is the most environmentally responsible and all-terrain Wrangler in Jeep history, with the open-air freedom that has always characterized the Wrangler driving experience. The driving performance has also been improved: The Wrangler Unlimited 4xe accelerates from zero to 6,5 kilometers per hour in 100 seconds and delivers a combined maximum output of 280 kW (380 hp) and a torque of 637 Newton meters. In addition, it drives in purely electric mode with unprecedented control when crawling and can cover more than 50 kilometers (in the urban WLTP cycle) locally emission-free, perfect for daily commuter traffic. The battery can be fully charged in less than three hours, with options for scheduling and - thanks to the Max Regen function - an additional increase in the battery charge during recuperation in overrun mode.

The Wrangler Unlimited 4xe is equipped with two electric motors and a high-voltage battery pack, plus a high-tech turbo gasoline engine with a displacement of two liters and the proven TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission. The immediately available torque and the improved performance from the combination of turbo gasoline and electric motors make the off-road champion even more powerful and hard to stop on trails. 4xe technology takes the new Wrangler Unlimited 4xe to the next level, especially off-road. It also offers four-wheel drive in fully electric mode for exemplary all-terrain performance with the special pleasure of listening to the sounds of nature alone.

With all of this, the Wrangler Unlimited 4xe retains the "trail-rated" technology of all Wranglers. Depending on the equipment, it offers the two different four-wheel drives Selec-Trac or Rock-Trac, both active, demand-controlled and fully automatic, with Dana axles, Trac-Lok locking differentials and, depending on the version, with electric Tru-Lok front and rear axle locks as well as an electrically decoupling front anti-roll bar. The 4xe technology not only makes the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited a more sustainable and efficient 4 × 4 vehicle with a fuel consumption of around 3,5 liters per 100 kilometers in hybrid mode and almost 70 percent lower CO2 emissions compared to gasoline Version (WLTP cycle) but also promises an effortless driving experience that is great fun.

Personalization is another key attribute of the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4xe. With the Stellantis brand Mopar, customers can choose from more than 100 accessories to expand the functionality of the vehicle with additional content.

"Electric Blue" design accents characterize the new Wrangler Unlimited 4xe

The Jeep® Wrangler Unlimited 4xe is also unmistakably a Wrangler, with its iconic, sculptural design aesthetic and unmistakable functional elements such as the trapezoidal wheel cutouts, the iconic radiator grille with the seven air intake slots and the round headlights. The new Wrangler Unlimited 4xe can be recognized by its electric blue accents for the Jeep logos, the “4xe” and “Trail Rated” badges and the “Wrangler Unlimited” lettering, while the Rubicon trim level also has its specific graphic on the bonnet Electric Blue draws.

The electrical charging connection has a push-open / push-close cover and is located on the front left for easy parking at charging stations. The charging connection has LED displays for the charging status. An LED battery level indicator is located on the top of the dashboard so that the battery level can be easily checked at a glance while it is charging.

Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4xe: electric off-road!

In the interior, all 4xe versions have a new TFT instrument display in the driver's primary field of vision behind the steering wheel with a 17,8 centimeter screen diagonal, the Uconnect 8.4NAV touchscreen with a 21,3 centimeter screen diagonal and with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto Integration1 as well as the specific hybrid pages for monitoring electrified driving. The buttons for the E-Selec system with its three electrified driving modes are located to the left of the steering wheel. Decorative seams in Electric Blue on the seats and panels are typical of the Wrangler Unlimited 4xe Rubicon.

  • Structure and operation of the plug-in hybrid drive of the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4xe
  • The battery pack does not limit the trunk capacity

The 4xe drive of the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited integrates two electric motors and a 400 volt battery with an efficient turbo four-cylinder petrol engine and the TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission. This configuration maximizes the efficiency of the components of the hybrid drive and combines them with the world-famous and proven drive train of the Wrangler to a system output of 280 kW (380 PS) and 637 Newton meters of torque. The drive components are:

  • 2.0 T-GDI four-cylinder in-line petrol turbo engine
  • High-voltage motor / generator mounted on the engine
  • High-voltage motor / generator integrated in the eight-speed automatic transmission (ZF 8P75PH)
  • Lithium-ion, nickel-manganese-cobalt battery pack with 400 volts, 17 kilowatt hours of capacity and 96 cells

The 2.0 T-GDI turbo engine belongs to the Global Medium Engine family of the Stellantis Group. The state-of-the-art direct injection gasoline engine uses a twin-scroll turbocharger with low inertia that is mounted directly on the cylinder head, along with a cooling water circuit for the turbocharger, intake air and throttle valve housing.

At the front of the engine, a liquid-cooled high-voltage motor-generator unit replaces the conventional alternator and starter motor at the same time. A belt connects the engine generator to the engine's crankshaft pulley. The motor generator provides additional torque for the drive, turns the crankshaft for an almost seamless, fuel-saving start-stop operation and generates charging current for the high-voltage battery. The Wrangler 4xe is equipped with a 12 volt on-board battery for operating electrical accessories.

Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4xe: electric off-road!

The second high-voltage motor / generator is built into the front of the Torque-Flite automatic transmission, where it replaces the hydraulic torque converter. Two clutches control the power and torque of the electric motor and the combustion engine. A binary coupling (on / off) between the combustion engine and the electric motor opens or closes the mechanical connection between the two motors, which makes it possible to drive the Wrangler Unlimited 4xe purely electrically. When the binary clutch is closed, the torques of the petrol engine and the electric motor combine in the automatic transmission. A variable clutch behind the electric motor controls the engagement with the transmission to improve drivability and efficiency.

The combustion engine and the two motor-generators are connected upstream of the sophisticated mechanical 4 × 4 systems of the Wrangler. Wrangler owners will therefore not notice any difference in operation, but will appreciate the significant performance improvements, with an acceleration from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in 6,5 seconds and a reduction in CO2 emissions of almost 70 percent compared to the gasoline version in the WLTP cycle.

The lithium-ion battery pack with 96 cells, 17 kilowatt hours of capacity and 400 volts uses nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) / graphite chemistry. It is protected under the second row of seats, which is why these seats had to be redesigned. The seats can be folded forward to gain access to the battery. A heating and cooling circuit keeps the battery, which is housed in an aluminum housing, at the optimum temperature.

The hybrid system of the Wrangler Unlimited 4xe includes an integrated dual charging module (IDCM) that combines a battery charging system and a DC / DC converter in one unit. The Power Inverter Module (PIM) is housed inside the battery pack to protect it from damage.

All high-voltage electronic components and systems, including the wiring between the battery pack and the electric motors, are sealed watertight. Like all Trail Rated Jeep Wrangler models, the 4xe variant is also suitable for wading up to 76 centimeters.

Another important layout feature is the placement of the battery pack under the rear seats. It has been possible to keep the trunk volume unchanged from 533 liters with the seats upright.

Electric driving modes

  • 4xe "E-Selec" with three settings for electric and electrified driving
  • Regenerative braking as an important part of electrifying driving

The driver of the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4xe can optimally configure the hybrid drive train for every journey, be it for daily commuter trips in purely electric mode, for a night in the city or for an almost silent exploration of nature in the field. The drive has three E-Selec operating modes that the driver can select using buttons on the dashboard to the left of the steering wheel. Regardless of the selected mode, the Wrangler Unlimited 4xe works in hybrid configuration as soon as the battery approaches its minimum charge level.

Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4xe: electric off-road!

Hybrid: The standard mode combines the power and torque of the 2.0 T-GDI engine with that of the electric motor. In this mode, the drive first uses the electric motor and then adds the drive power of the 2.0 T-GDI as required, for example when the battery has reached its minimum charge level or the driver wants more drive power than the electric motor alone can deliver.

Electric: The electric motor is the only drive until either the battery has reached the minimum charge or the driver demands more torque. Only then is the 2.0 T-GDI engine put into operation.

eSave: The T-GDI motor is the sole drive to either save the battery for later use (Battery Save) or to charge it (Battery Charge). Both sub-modes can be selected by the driver on the Hybrid Electric pages of the Uconnect monitor. Battery Save maintains the state of charge of the battery for later use. Battery Charge charges the battery up to 80 percent with the help of the internal combustion engine, using the combined electrical generator.

In order to optimize the use of the E-Selec modes, the driver information display and the Uconnect touchscreen have Hybrid Pages. With the Hybrid Pages, the driver can monitor the flow of electricity and check the effectiveness of the braking energy recovery and plan charging times in order to benefit from lower electricity tariffs.

Regenerative braking is a key benefit of the Wrangler Unlimited 4xe that conventionally powered vehicles don't have. When the driver brakes, the drive control activates the maximum available regenerative braking force of the electric motors of up to 0,25 g to slow the vehicle, complemented by the Wrangler's traditional friction brakes. The regenerative braking function also extends the brake pad replacement intervals.

When four-wheel drive is engaged, all four wheels feed in torque for regenerative braking, which maximizes energy recovery. The high-voltage battery is charged with the electricity generated in this way.

Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4xe: electric off-road!

The regenerative energy generation can still be maximized using the 'Max Regen' function that can be selected by the driver. 'Max Regen' intensifies the regeneration calibration as soon as the driver releases the accelerator pedal. 'Max Regen' brakes the Wrangler Unlimited 4xe more strongly than standard regenerative braking and generates more electricity for the high-voltage battery. Once selected, the 'Max Rain' function remains activated until the driver deselects it.

Off-road ability

Its legendary off-road capability defines the legacy of the Jeep Wrangler. All Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4xe models are equipped with an active and demand-controlled four-wheel drive system: Selec-Trac in the Sahara 4xe and 80th Anniversary 4xe equipment and Rock-Trac in the Rubicon 4xe, the most off-road version. Both work in four driving modes (plus neutral mode):

  • 2H (rear-wheel drive with road transmission)
  • 4H AUTO (fully automatic four-wheel drive with road transmission)
  • 4H Part-Time (permanent four-wheel drive with road transmission)
  • 4L (permanent four-wheel drive with off-road reduction)

When four-wheel drive is switched to 4L, all drive modes are available. The seamless integration of the electric drive into the 4 × 4 drive train opens up a new level of off-road mobility for the Wrangler Unlimited 4xe.

Off-road enthusiasts will find that the immediate availability of electric motor torque enables more precise and controlled climbing and crawling because there is no longer any need to build up engine speed to get high torque.

The "Trail Rated" technology of the Wrangler Unlimited 4xe includes, depending on the equipment variant, the two different active, demand-controlled four-wheel drive systems Selec-Trac or Rock Trac, Dana axles, electric Tru-Lock front and rear axle locks, and Trac-Lok - Limited slip differentials and the ability to electrically decouple the front anti-roll bar.

The Wrangler Unlimited 4xe drives purely electrically with four driven wheels, with little noise and no fuel consumption, and it offers its passengers the special experience of fully concentrating on the sounds of nature.

The new Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4xe is available in the Sahara 4xe and Rubicon 4xe versions. The Sahara 4xe is equipped with fully automatic four-wheel drive and Dana 44 axles on the front and rear axles and has the two-stage Selec-Trac transfer case with a reduction of 2,72.

A Trac-Lok limited-slip differential on the rear axle - standard in the Sahara equipment - provides additional grip in situations with low traction, such as on wet asphalt, ice or snow or on sand and gravel.

About Thomas Wachsmuth

Thomas Wachsmuth - He has been an integral part of tuningblog.eu since 2013. His passion for cars is so intense that he invests every available penny in them. While he dreams of a BMW E31 850CSI and a Hennessey 6x6 Ford F-150, he currently drives a rather inconspicuous BMW 540i (G31/LCI). His collection of books, magazines and brochures on the subject of car tuning has now reached such proportions that he himself has become a walking reference work for the tuning scene.  More about Thomas
