Lamborghini Countach LPI 800-4: the legend is back!

Automobili Lamborghini introduces the Countach LPI 800-4: a futuristic, limited series that pays homage to the Countach's cult status as a revolutionary in design and technology and has been redesigned for the 21st century. Its purist lines immediately reveal the legacy of the Countach: the patriarch of modern super sports cars and Lamborghini design. With its naturally aspirated V12 engine in combination with Lamborghini's hybrid supercapacitor technology, the Countach LPI 800-4 preserves the inimitable experience of the V12 and the sound of its own Longitudinal posteriorEngine (LP) in connection with the hybrid technology (I) developed for the Sián. With a combined maximum output of 814 PS (rounded down to 800 in the name) from a naturally aspirated engine (780 PS) and electric motor (34 PS) and the permanent all-wheel drive, the LPI 800-4 achieves top values such as an acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in just 2,8 , 0 seconds, from 200 to 8,6 km / h in 355 seconds and a top speed of XNUMX km / h.

“The Countach LPI 800-4 is a visionary car of the present, just like its predecessor,” explains Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini. “The Countach is one of the most important icons of the automobile and embodies not only the design and construction principles of Lamborghini, but also our philosophy of redrawing boundaries, achieving the unexpected and extraordinary and, above all, the 'stuff that dreams are made of' being. The Countach LPI 800-4 pays homage to this Lamborghini legacy, but it's not a retrospective: it shows how the legendary Countach of the 70s and 80s could have evolved into an elite supersport model of this decade. It stands in the typical Lamborghini tradition of looking ahead, breaking new ground in design and technology and at the same time celebrating the DNA of our brand. It is a Lamborghini that expresses the enduring and emotional power of the brand: always inspiring and exciting to look at, listen to and above all to drive. "

Countach - the patriarch of modern super sports car design

The Lamborghini Countach LPI 800-4 is immediately recognizable as the true descendant of the Countach generations: a testimony to the lasting effect of the original Countach design, which became the figurehead of the 1980s and a symbol for ultra-cool automobiles and lifestyle. The name Countach - a fitting expression for astonishment and amazement from the Piedmontese dialect, the "Kun-tatsch" is pronounced - is one of the few names of Lamborghini models that has nothing to do with bulls.

The unmistakable silhouette of the Countach with the main line running from front to back, the sharp angles and lines and the idiosyncratic wedge shape have innovated the modern super sports car design just as much as the subsequent Lamborghini models. The Countach LPI 800-4 continues the characteristic lines of the five Countach models that have been built over almost 20 years and concentrates on the purest implementation of the legendary automotive design.

The final design is clear and simple, with references to the first production versions LP 500 and LP 400. To give the LPI 800-4 the unmistakable face of a Countach, the Quattrovalvole edition was used as inspiration; through the confident lines of the bonnet with the wide, low, rectangular radiator grille and headlights, as well as through the wheel arches with their hexagonal motif. The sharp incline of the roof line takes up the straight lines of the original Countach and blends in with the dynamic line from the front to the rear. There is no fixed rear wing outside of the clean lines, and the air scoops are fluidly integrated into the powerful shoulders, which are adorned with the characteristic slotted Countach gills. The legendary and aerodynamically effective NACA air inlets cut into the side and doors of the Countach LPI 800-4, while the striking Periscopio lines, which run through the roof to the rear of the vehicle and are particularly noticeable when viewed from above, float towards the rear seem to be.

The rear of the Countach LPI 800-4 can be recognized immediately by the characteristic shape of an inverted wedge. The rear bumper has a low, slim line and the 'Hexagonita' design characterizes the three-piece taillights. The LPI 800-4 has the typical four tailpipes of the Countach family, which are connected to the carbon fiber rear diffuser. Access for the driver and front passenger is of course via the iconic scissor doors, which were first introduced on the Countach and have become the hallmark of the Lamborghini V12 models.

"The Countach is one of the most important and exciting cars in automotive history and the history of Lamborghini," says Mitja Borkert, Head of Design at Lamborghini. “The Countach LPI 800-4 project is an unparalleled design opportunity: leading such an important car into a new era is a unique privilege. The Countach was provocative and polarizing, it made people smile and stare, but its notorious recognizability shows the purity of its designer heritage: The Countach LPI 800-4 takes this clarity to a new level, celebrated in an exclusive limited edition, which takes its place in automotive history. "

Engineering at the highest level for a new age

The Countach's V12 engine is as legendary as its design. The original Countach had a longitudinally mounted rear engine, side-mounted radiators from Formula 1 as well as a forward-facing gearbox and a tubular frame construction, together with the passenger compartment that was moved forward. This approach to sports car engineering was just as revolutionary as its amazing looks. The engine position was chosen with a view to weight distribution and balance, and of course the twelve-cylinder naturally aspirated engine delivered a particularly emotional power output at the highest level. The Countach developed the best available technologies to deliver an exceptional vehicle: this visionary philosophy is reflected in the Countach LPI 800-4, which uses the best of current Lamborghini technologies and engineering to deliver the performance that one Countach is expected in 2021.

"The engineering team behind the original Countach took Lamborghini's groundbreaking technical approach to the next level, delivering unexpected innovations and the best possible performance from a production vehicle," said Maurizio Reggiani, Lamborghini's Chief Technical Officer. "This spirit drives the research and development department at Lamborghini and leads to the groundbreaking hybrid technology of the LPI 800-4 as well as to the emotional driving experience and top performance that one expects from a top-of-the-range V12 from Lamborghini."

The Lamborghini V12 engine with 6,5 liters displacement and an output of 780 hp is combined with a 48-volt electric motor that is mounted directly on the transmission and delivers a further 34 hp for immediate response and higher performance: it is around the innovative and unique architecture that Lamborghini developed for the Sián and which is the only mild hybrid technology that creates a direct connection between the electric motor and the wheels, preserving the unadulterated behavior of the V12 engine. The electric motor is driven by a supercapacitor that delivers three times as much energy as a lithium-ion battery of the same weight.

The monocoque chassis and all body parts are made of carbon fiber and represent the optimal solution for low weight and exceptional torsional rigidity: The Countach LPI 800-4 has a dry weight of 1595 kg and thus has a power to weight ratio of 1,95 kg / PS. Visible carbon elements of the exterior can be seen in the front splitter, around the windshield and on the exterior mirrors, as well as on the air inlets of the bonnet, on the rocker panels and of course on various parts of the interior. Movable vents made using the latest 3D printing technology and a photochromic roof that changes from opaque to transparent at the touch of a button are a reminder that, despite its historical inspiration, this vehicle will be a future automotive screensaver of the 21st century.

World premiere at The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering, USA

The Countach LPI 800-4 is presented today at The Quail (USA) in the special color Bianco Siderale, which contains a touch of mother-of-pearl blue and is reminiscent of Ferruccio Lamborghini's own Countach LP 400 S, complete with red and black leather interior. The interior also borrows from the original Countach in the context of a modern vehicle. The classic and luxurious leather of the specially designed comfort seats and the dashboard is finished with geometric stitching. The square motif hints at the bold style and optimism of design and technology of the 1970s.

The 20-inch (front) and 21-inch (rear) wheels of the Countach LPI 800-4 are designed in the dial style of the 1980s with carbon-ceramic brake discs and Pirelli P Zero Corsa-Tire fitted.

Owners of the exclusive Countach LPI 800-4 in limited edition can choose from a range of historical exterior paintwork, mostly in solid colors such as the legendary Impact White, Giallo Countach and Verde Medio. Furthermore, the contemporary palette offers modern finishes, mostly metallic colors such as gray, purple and blue. The interior is available in four configurations, monochrome or two-tone, also with a possible special color choice for the carpets (five colors), the sky and the seams.

A central 8,4-inch HDMI touchscreen, exclusive to the LPI 800-4, manages the vehicle's controls, including connectivity and Apple CarPlay. It also has a special button called 'Styles' (design): when pressed, it explains the Countach's design philosophy to a privileged audience.

With an edition of 112 pieces, this number refers to the internal project name 'LP 112', which was used during the development of the original Lamborghini Countach. The Countach LPI 800-4 will be delivered to owners around the world from the first quarter of 2022, who have the privilege of driving a piece of automotive history reinterpreted for the future.
