Under the term "Lexus Electrified", the Japanese premium brand starts into an electrified future. The Lexus LF-30 Electrified Concept, which celebrates its European premiere at the Geneva Motor Show (March 5 to 15, 2020), provides an outlook on the next generation of electrified vehicles. Since the launch of the Lexus RX 400h in 2005, the brand has played a pioneering role in electrification. Thanks to technologies such as a two-stage reduction gearbox and the multistage hybrid drive, the Lexus hybrid models guarantee outstanding performance and direct response - in line with the corporate philosophy of delighting customers with innovative vehicles. The "Lexus Electrified" vision goes a fundamental step further in terms of driving performance, handling, usability and driving pleasure.

Building on years of experience with hybrid drives, including battery management, control modules and electric motors, Lexus aims to create a unique driving experience. Lexus Electrified technologies enable integrated control of the powertrain, steering, suspension and brakes. The result is exemplary driving comfort in all traffic situations and further improved safety. In 2020 Lexus will launch the UX 300e, its first battery-electric vehicle. It marks the start of a growing model range that includes hybrid, plug-in hybrid, electric and fuel cell vehicles. The first Lexus plug-in hybrid and a new platform for purely electric vehicles are to be introduced at the beginning of this decade.
Lexus LF-30 Electrified Concept: The Highlights
The new Lexus LF-30 Electrified Concept impressively embodies the company vision of electrification. Packed in a futuristic exterior, the battery-electric vehicle enables automated driving and integrates other new technologies: a steer-by-wire system, for example, in addition to a cockpit that puts the driver at the center of attention. Based on the Lexus expertise in hybrid drives, the all-electric drive of the Gullwing also extends the brand's pioneering role. The precise control of the electric motors guarantees a direct response.
Design as a harbinger of a new generation of vehicles
The unique design that only a battery-electric vehicle with wheel hub motors can offer impressively reflects the energy flow of the LF-30 Electrified. The energy flows from the widely spaced wheels towards the vehicle cabin and driver down to the street. As a battery-electric vehicle, the concept study does not need a bonnet: the elegantly flowing front merges into a sharp rear. The large window front, which extends from front to back, the muscular fenders and the wing-shaped headlights replicate the contours of the brand-typical Lexus diabolo grille. In addition to the headlights, the striking rear lights and side air intakes ensure excellent aerodynamics and cooling performance - design and function merge. The light transmission of the side windows can be adjusted as required, so that the occupants can enjoy an unobstructed view of the surrounding landscape or a high degree of privacy. The color of the front section and certain lighting effects indicate whether the vehicle is controlled in normal mode or drives autonomously. This once again underlines Lexus' pursuit of the perfect mix of style and functionality. The “Voltaic Sky” paintwork in the concept study achieves a unique blue-green color thanks to its ultra-modern coating.
Innovative interior with redesigned cockpit
Lexus has always focused on people. The “Tazuna” cockpit concept, which is used for the first time in the LF-30 Electrified, underlines and reinforces this philosophy once again. As with horse and rider, who only communicate with a rein, the steering wheel control buttons and the head-up display have been perfectly coordinated: the driver can control the navigation and audio system and change the driving mode without looking out from the street and have to operate additional manual switches. As a harbinger of future Tazuna cockpits, the study features gesture control and augmented reality (AR), with which vehicle information can be displayed even better. This creates an interior that offers drivers and passengers a new level of comfort and convenience. The interior conveys a feeling of openness and security. All switches and controls are easily accessible, a large screen with gesture control increases the comfort for the front passenger. The rear seats adapt to the passengers thanks to a special technology, various modes either support lying down and relaxing or promote attention.

A Mark Levinson® audio system ensures unique sound enjoyment: A highly developed loudspeaker control creates ideal acoustic spaces for the driver and the other passengers. The speakers integrated into the headrests not only ensure an impressive sound experience, but also have a noise reduction function that contributes to more calm. There is also a glass roof over the rear seats, which has voice control and a gesture-controlled "SkyGate": With the help of augmented reality, it shows various information such as navigation instructions, users' favorite videos and even a starry sky. Packed in a unique design, the interior also provides an outlook on the brand's future understanding of luxury: more sustainable materials are intended to reduce environmental pollution. Yakisugi (charred cedar), for example, is a traditional Japanese material used in the floor and in the steering control, while recycled metal has been processed into fibers for the door trim.
Maximum driving dynamics thanks to innovative technology
In order to raise driving performance, handling, control and driving pleasure to a new level, the LF-30 Electrified uses numerous modern technologies. Electric wheel hub motors on each of the four wheels and the low-positioned high-voltage battery mean better handling and high driving performance. Automated driving and drone technology contribute to the unique driving experience. At the heart of the "Lexus Electrified" vision is "Advanced Posture Control" technology, which will be used increasingly in electrified vehicles in the future. It regulates the drive power of electric motors with high torque. Since the front and rear wheel hub motors are controlled completely independently of one another, the study runs with front, rear or all-wheel drive depending on the situation. The compact and light drive units also improve packaging and create an optimal driving experience regardless of the road surface and the external conditions.
less mechanics - the steer-by-wire system
The LF-30 Electrified also comes with a steer-by-wire system: the elimination of the mechanical connection between the steering wheel and wheels enables more flexible control depending on the driving situation and a more precise steering feel. At the same time, this technology increases the freedom: In the autonomous driving mode, the steering can be pushed forward and thus out of the way. As the next-generation battery-electric vehicle, the LF-30 Electrified has wireless charging technology that makes daily charging particularly easy and convenient. Energy management based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) optimally distributes electrical energy to vehicles and living spaces. The charging strategy adapts optimally to the daily routine of the user. Another AI system recognizes and distinguishes the voices of the vehicle occupants and adjusts the interior ambience to the individual preferences, which are stored in a personalized way on the vehicle key. The system controls air temperature and audio volume, recognizes navigation destination entries and suggests activities at the destination. It also recognizes the driver's preferred driving style and adjusts the chassis and drive to the desired scenario in real time.
"Lexus Airporter" drone technology on board
Another special feature of the LF-30 Electrified concept study is the "Lexus Airporter" drone technology. For example, it accepts suitcases at the front door via autonomous control and transports them to the luggage compartment of the vehicle. Based on "Lexus Teammate", the brand's latest technology concept for autonomous driving, the study includes state-of-the-art functions such as "Chauffeur" and "Guardian mode". All passengers enjoy maximum comfort when driving autonomously and can relax while Advanced Posture Control is active. Fully autonomous parking is just as much a special service feature as the pick-up function: the LF-30 Electrified drives autonomously to the front door to get in.
