As a flagship sedan, the Lexus LS (combined fuel consumption 6,4 - 6,3 l / 100km, combined CO2 emissions 146-144 g / km) combines modern technologies, Japanese craftsmanship and stylish aesthetics. With its targeted modifications to the body and interior as well as a newly developed exterior color, the new LS once again exceeds the limits of design. The developers chose “Time in Design” as the main theme for the revision of the exterior and interior design - inspired by the classic Japanese concept that beauty can change from one moment to the next due to the influence of time and surroundings.

"In order to express the design atmosphere, we wanted to capture certain moments“, Explains LS chief developer Toshio Asahi. "The designers chose moonlight, which is reflected in waves - a motif that combines the interior and exterior design of the new LS."

Lexus has been continuously researching new exterior colors since 2003 and developing innovative painting technologies that achieve an even more brilliant appearance. The new Lunar Silver hue is the latest example of Lexus' advances in this area. The paintwork impressively stages the contours of the body and its contrasting play of light and shadow and gives the subtleties of the design even more impact and fascination. The color quality changes depending on the time of day and the angle of view - an effect that is additionally intensified when the LS is in motion and the passing surroundings are reflected in the surfaces.

This effect is achieved through advances in ultrasound technology. While standard paintwork is usually 13 to 14 micrometers thick, Lexus had already reduced the thickness to around four micrometers. With Lunar Silber, the technology has now been further refined and the paint layer has been compressed to a micrometer. This ensures that the aluminum flakes contained, which are normally distributed randomly in the layer, are more closely bundled and uniformly aligned, which gives the color a flawless surface and maximum shine.

Paint technician and production team work closely together

In addition to this ultra-thin film, precise application and the properties of the primer are also important, the quality and evenness of which have also been further optimized. Paint technicians and the production team worked closely together to implement continuous detail improvements until the desired pure and mirror-like silver tone was achieved. The "Time in Design" theme is also used through two traditional techniques as a new interior application for the door panels. Matching the new exterior color Lunar Silver, the interior option "Japanese Art" reinterprets traditional Japanese art and aesthetics in a modern way.

The Japanese Nishijin weaving technique uses the same traditional technique that was once used to make woven fabrics for Japanese aristocrats: Fine metal threads are attached to washi paper and cut into thin strips that are used to make yarn. For the LS, the threads are woven into a three-dimensional pattern that is modeled on the shimmering effect of waves in the moonlight.

Haku - Japanese for "sheet of metal"

The application on the door handles was created with the help of the more than 400 year old handicraft technique Haku - Japanese for "sheet of metal". Metal is rolled into a foil that is only one to two micrometers thick. This extremely thin film is applied by hand by the Takumi masters and creates a fine, moonlight-like shine.

Another new feature is real wood cladding made of open-pored, black glazed ash, which is optionally available as a pure wood application or as a wood laser cut. In the laser cut variant, the dark wood creates a sharp contrast to the underlying silver metal layer, which is exposed in a high-precision laser cutting process.
