After almost 40 years of construction, the Mercedes G-Class 2018 - and thus also the vehicle refiner Sportservice Lorinser - saw a real model change for the first time. In doing so, the car manufacturer succeeded in an exemplary manner in bringing the technology up to date without watering down the character of the off-road vehicle icon. One thing is certain: a car-loving time traveler from 1979 would have recognized the new G as such immediately. There is one thing fans of fresh air have to do without: a convertible version. This was still the case with the predecessor, initially with a spartan military tarpaulin and then, from 1989, very comfortably with an electric convertible top. However, this was also the end of 2013 after a “Final Edition” based on the G 500 with a V8 engine and 388 hp (285 kW). Sportservice Lorinser shows how modern and up-to-date the old open G still looks today with a spectacular conversion - of course also with an octet of cylinders.

The parts used are still available from Lorinser, although not via the website. Prices and further information on individual request. All components are also available for the closed version, and the Waiblingen-based company also has an extensive range of finishing options for the new G. Even the brute honeycomb grill with the large Lorinser lettering signals that a real powerhouse is on the way here. The V8 sound, behind which there is almost five and a half liters of displacement, is acoustically processed by the lavishly designed sports rear silencer from Lorinser.

The angular body is given the just right measure of sportiness from the Lorinser spoiler bumper with a huge expanded metal insert. In this convertible, it's not just the passengers who are optimally caressed by the wind. The combined fog and cornering light sets further accents and is a tribute to modernity. The rear view is characterized by a muscular Lorinser rear apron and the distinctive spare wheel cover with recessed Lorinser lettering. In the photo vehicle, the brown top contrasts perfectly with the black paint. This is taken up in color by the matt black Lorinser RS9 wheels, which are also available in silver as an alternative. After all, paint colors and tastes are quite different.

With its muscular five main spokes, which are flanked by elegant companion bars, the Lorinser RS9 looks perfectly balanced. The deep hub area with the noticeable notches perfectly rounds off the look of the light alloy wheel, which with its distinctive exterior fits perfectly with a character like the G-Class. With dimensions of 10 × 22 inches, it is, by the way, four sizes larger than the 18-inch model of the "Final Edition". If you want, you can also get a Lorinser lowering kit for your G. Because the convertible is of course more often to be found on the boulevard than on Boulder Lane and other off-road trails. But of course you could also enjoy the open-top driving pleasure there, after all, a G remains a G.
