With the addition of driver assistance systems, for example, the optional steering and lane guidance assistant with active navigation guidance and the new emergency lane assistant, the new BMW 5 Series is taking the next steps on the way to automated driving. The large variety of technological innovations forms the basis for the series with the longest tradition in the BMW model range to continue its success story. Since the market launch of the current model generation, more than 600 units of the BMW 000 Series Sedan and BMW 5 Series Touring have been sold worldwide. The market launch of the new BMW 5 Series begins in July 5. Both models will be produced at the BMW plant in Dingolfing, Bavaria. The new BMW 2020 Series Sedan is also being produced by production partner Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria. The long version of the sedan is built exclusively for the Chinese market in the Dadong plant of the BMW Brilliance Automotive joint venture in Shenyang, China.

The exterior design of the BMW 5 Series is characterized by sporty elegance and a clear surface design. With precise modifications, the presence and the stylish sportiness of the sedan and touring model in particular are now being expressed even more intensely. The BMW kidney grille has gained in width and height, now extends further down into the front apron and is surrounded by a one-piece frame. With their now flatter contours, the headlights show the focused look typical of BMW in a modern interpretation. Two side-by-side, U-shaped or optionally L-shaped daytime running light sources create a precise, modern light graphic. New full-LED headlights including adaptive cornering lights, the BMW Selective Beam glare-free high beam with matrix technology and the high beam assistant are available as optional extras. The BMW laser light is now also available for all model variants of the BMW 5 Series. With both optional headlight variants, the outer daytime running lights also take over the function of the direction indicators. Black borders and a new L-shaped graphic also give the rear lights of the new BMW 5 Series a particularly striking appearance. Tail light and brake light are integrated in a common light body, which for the first time forms a unit with the strongly three-dimensionally modeled exterior light lens. Regardless of the equipment line and engine, all models in the new BMW 5 Series are now equipped with trapezoidal tailpipe trims.

The now 10,25-inch and optional 12,3-inch control display, redesigned control buttons on the center console and the standard sports leather steering wheel with rearranged multifunction buttons characterize the precisely refined interior of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the new BMW 5 Series Touring. Your standard equipment was also supplemented by automatic climate control with extended features. The new options include M multifunctional seats with various adjustment options, new interior moldings and perforated Sensatec seat surfaces.

Expansion of the plug-in hybrid offering to initially five models, eDrive technology now also in the new BMW 5 Series Touring and in combination with an inline six-cylinder engine. BMW eDrive technology of the latest generation, in combination with a four-cylinder gasoline engine, will no longer only drive the new BMW 2020e Sedan and the new BMW 530e xDrive Sedan, but also the new BMW 530e Touring and the new BMW 530e xDrive Touring. The internal combustion engine generates a maximum output of 530 kW / 135 hp, the electric drive has 184 kW / 80 hp. The system performance of the two drive units can be temporarily increased to up to 109 kW / 215 hp using XtraBoost. The electrical range is 292 to 58 kilometers for the new BMW 62e Touring and 530 to 53 kilometers for the new BMW 56e xDrive Touring. From autumn 530, the new BMW 2020e xDrive Sedan will also provide additional variety in the range of plug-in hybrid models. This model combines the 545 kW / 80 hp electric drive with a straight six-cylinder petrol engine that mobilizes 109 kW / 210 hp. This results in a system output of 286 kW / 290 hp. The electrical range of the new BMW 394e xDrive Sedan is between 545 and 54 kilometers. All plug-in hybrid models enable the use of the BMW eDrive Zone digital service as standard. The unique function automatically triggers switching to the purely electrical operating mode when entering environmental zones. 57-volt mild hybrid technology for all four- and six-cylinder engines.

The mild hybrid technology, which was first introduced in the BMW 2019d and BMW 520d xDrive models in autumn 520, now provides even better driving performance with lower fuel consumption and increased driving comfort in all four- and six-cylinder models of the new BMW 5 Series. By using a particularly powerful 48-volt starter generator and an additional battery, significantly more braking energy can be recovered and stored. This energy is available both to supply the vehicle electrical system and to relieve and support the internal combustion engine. With its spontaneously available additional power of 8 kW / 11 PS, the starter generator provides an electrical boost that increases the dynamics when starting and accelerating. In addition, the powerful starter generator optimizes efficiency by supporting the combustion engine when driving at a constant speed, as well as comfort when using the Auto Start Stop and the sailing function.

Further developed drive and chassis technology.

In addition to a 390 kW / 530 hp V8 engine in the top model BMW M550i xDrive Sedan, the new BMW 5 Series also has three petrol and three diesel engines with a performance range between 135 kW / 184 hp and 250 kW / 340 hp. The efficiency of gasoline engines is optimized by direct injection of petrol, which operates at increased pressure. The two-stage turbocharging now used in all diesel engines increases spontaneous power delivery. All engines are combined with an 8-speed Steptronic transmission as standard. The intelligent all-wheel drive BMW xDrive is available as standard or as an option for all model variants with the exception of the entry-level petrol engine. There is a choice of high-quality suspension systems for a targeted increase in agility and dynamics or driving comfort. An M sports suspension, an Adaptive M suspension and the Adaptive M suspension Professional including active roll stabilization are available as options. The new version of the optional integral active steering offers support when maneuvering even at speeds of less than 3 km / h through targeted steering of the rear wheels. As a visual feature of the M sports brake system, red calipers are now also available in addition to blue. Driver assistance systems with additional functions.

With additional functions, the driver assistance systems available for the new BMW 5 Series increase both driving comfort on long journeys and safety in confusing traffic situations. The lane departure warning included in the optional Driving Assistant now also includes lane return using steering assistance. Active navigation guidance is also part of the new steering and lane guidance assistant of the new Driving Assistant Professional. The system recognizes necessary lane changes based on navigation data. The driver can then easily do this using the lane change assistant. In addition, the new emergency lane assistant automatically guides the vehicle to the ideal edge of its lane in traffic jams on highways. The functionality of the Parking Assistant has also been expanded. The reversing assistant now takes over the steering movements when resetting over a distance of up to 50 meters. With the new Drive Recorder, video images of what is going on around the vehicle can be recorded and saved. The 3D environment visualization in the instrument cluster offers an optimized overview of the traffic situation as well as the status and options for action of the driver assistance systems.
