The epitome of the sleeper! Mantec BMW 3 Series (E36) 40d!

Anyone dealing with the subject Tuning busy, he has certainly heard of the term "Sleeper" heard. These are vehicles that look as original as possible, but have been significantly upgraded from a technical point of view. And one such vehicle is this inconspicuous BMW E36 3 Series (318i) in Samoa blue from 1998. A vehicle that does not even have painted bumpers, painted exterior mirrors, fog lights or clear glass indicators. Only the built-in one Hartge Classic 2-wheel set in the format 9 × 19 inches with Goodyear tires (255 / 30R19) and the subtle lowering, which is achieved by means of the KW coilover kit (adjustable in compression and rebound damping) stand out. Almost every E36 nowadays has non-standard aluminum rims and a subtle lowering. So nothing special! The highlight of the 3 Series is of course under the bonnet. A huge 3,0-liter in-line six-cylinder turbodiesel (N57D30TOP) from the BMW E71 X6 xDrive 40d is now working here. And Mantec Racing GmbH placed it exactly there. It gets pimped quickly V10 with 650 HP stuffed from the E60 M5 into the 3 Series Compact. But this time it should be a diesel. Under the direction of Günther Manhart, the tuning team installed a specially made E306 M600 exhaust system with sports downpipes for the standard 36 PS & 3 NM engine, there was a powerful intercooler and of course special chip tuning for the new components on the software side with the engine management to unite. The result is a hefty 410 hp and a brutal 880 Nm torque. In terms of torque, this is almost three times (!!!) the power compared to an M3 with an S50B30 six-cylinder. And Mantec is even aiming for an upgrade 500 PS on! And so that the power comes to the road in a species-appropriate manner, axles at the front and rear had to be from the E36 M3 and the rear axle differential was fitted with a locking element from the E39 M5.

There was also the DSC and ABS from the E90 and of course the factory gearbox from the 318i also flew out. It has been replaced by the X8's modern 6-speed automatic. The result is a top speed of a good 300 km / h and the sprint to country road speed should be completed by the staid Limo in under 5 seconds. And so that a deceleration appropriate to the species is guaranteed, there was an M sports brake system with 4-piston calipers and perforated discs from the F82 M4 front and rear, there are massive fist saddles from the 1 Series M Coupé with E36 M3 discs. And finally there were a few changes in the cabin. These are just as subtle as the modifications on the outside.

Mantec Racing installed an E46 M3 sports steering wheel with shift paddles, an E90 instrument cluster and of course the new selector lever of the mentioned automatic. The window cranks at the front and back and the boring velor finish, however, have remained. And, as always, the complete conversion is of course approved by the TÜV and entered in the vehicle documents including the Euro 5 emissions standard. This is how Sleeper works!
