“What is good must also be beautiful.” That was the credo of Wilhelm and Karl Maybach at the beginning of the 20th century. Father and son are considered gifted designers, pioneers of automotive luxury and pioneers in questions of style. With a simple-sounding formula, they have created something highly complex: Perfection and craftsmanship paired with innovation, both technical and craftsmanship. This is what the name Maybach stands for to this day. The Mercedes-Maybach brand continues to develop, with more models - and soon also electric. At the IAA Mobility 2021 in Munich, Mercedes-Maybach presented the “Concept EQS” and thus provided an outlook on the first fully electric series model from 2023. The SUV will be based on the modular architecture for electric vehicles in the luxury and upper class from Mercedes-Benz. To mark the 100th anniversary, Mercedes-Maybach is presenting the "Edition 100": a special edition of the current S-Class and GLS models limited to 100 units each. The special series can be ordered from the fourth quarter of 2021.

Wilhelm Maybach, born in 1846, was a close companion of Gottlieb Daimler and initially worked for Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft. Among many innovations, he developed the first Mercedes, which dominated the Nice race week in 1901. This success earned him the honorary name “Roi des Constructeurs” - King of the Constructors. He and his eldest son Karl combine progress with form: they want to create “the best of the best”. "I think around the clock, a constant impulse: the perfection of technology," says Wilhelm.

At the automobile exhibition in Berlin in September 1921, Maybach Motorenbau GmbH presented the first mass-produced car. The type W 3 is like a moving work of art: the first German series car with four-wheel brakes, planetary gears and an interior made from the finest materials. The audience is thrilled, a legend is born. The magazine "Motor" writes: "A new star in the automotive firmament is beginning to shine."

In the 20s and 30s, Maybach became an expression of character and social position and the epitome of technical and craftsmanship - in short for custom-made luxury. From now on, kings, industrialists and artists can be chauffeured in the stately limousines and majestic Pullman limousines, and travel the world in chic coupés, convertibles and roadsters. Every Maybach model is uniquely equipped. Precision meets glamor. An Indian maharajah even had his limousine decorated with gold and rubies in 1928.

After Karl Maybach's death in 1960, Daimler-Benz AG took over Maybach Motorenbau GmbH. In 2002, MAYBACH is revived as an independent brand: legendary vehicles such as the Maybach 2013 and Maybach 57 as well as the Maybach 62 Landaulet will be delivered worldwide by the beginning of 62. Once again, automotive excellence was the driving force for engineers, designers and customers alike.

Mercedes-Maybach has been a Mercedes-Benz brand since 2014. In addition to the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class and GLS series models, the brand is also launching the S 600 Pullman and limited special models such as the S 650 Cabriolet or a G 650 Landaulet. The core markets are China, Russia, South Korea, USA and Germany.

Each model builds on the brand's tradition of creating the “best of the best” and is created in exchange with customers in the Center of Excellence in Sindelfingen near Stuttgart. On request, the vehicles can also be customized with attention to detail by the specialists in the Mercedes-Maybach Manufaktur range: craftsmanship and perfection at the highest level.

“It's about the passionate combination of every little detail that turns a luxury car into a Maybach - and that in conjunction with the latest technology from Mercedes-Benz. Every Mercedes-Maybach stands for Sophisticated Luxury in all its facets - for our customers who are looking for something very special, "says Philipp Schiemer, Head of Top End Vehicle Group Mercedes-Benz AG and CEO Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

New models for real enthusiasts - Mercedes-Maybach launches the "Edition 100"

For the centenary, the brand is continuing its journey towards maximum individuality, independence and comfort with two high-tech models.

The top-class SUV GLS with V8 engine and 557 hp combines a sporty appearance with the luxury of a sedan: It is 33 centimeters higher than the classic sedan, offers a uniquely spacious interior with 1,10 meters of legroom and air suspension. The interior is noise-insulated and equipped with the finest leather interior. Electrically extendable running boards ensure maximum comfort when getting in and out.

The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class luxury limousine with a V12 engine and 612 hp is the perfect chauffeur-driven limousine. The highlights of the equipment include the noise-insulated first-class rear with a Burmester 4D surround sound system, heat and massage functions in the seats and high-tech screens for infotainment. Compared to the long S-Class, the model has a wheelbase that is 18 centimeters longer and is equipped with all-wheel drive for the first time.

Both models are now being celebrated in a refined “Edition 100”, each limited to 100 copies: Typical Maybach license plates such as the impressive radiator grille bear the brand emblem. The S-Class and GLS are painted by hand in the same two tones - high-tech silver / nautical blue - and have a special leather interior design in designo crystal white / silver gray pearl.

The brand logo with the inscription "Edition 100" adorns the C-pillar (S-Class) or D-pillar (GLS), various shelves and the illuminated panels in the interior. The “Edition 100” lettering also adorns the wheel hub covers. The forged wheels of the GLS and the wheels of the S-Class also shine in a new gray finish.

A car cover with the iconic double M as well as a noble, handcrafted case made of soft crystal white or black leather in file size - made for storing bowl and papers - also underline the exclusivity of the edition. In line with the anniversary edition, the long-term partners of Mercedes-Maybach are also designing strictly limited special series: for example, the license partner Maybach Icons of Luxury is offering a diamond-set fountain pen from the Maybach the Peak collection; the silver and yacht manufacturer Robbe & Berking presented a champagne goblet with a specially created engraving.

The "Edition 100" will be available from dealers in the first stores from the beginning of 2022, with further stores to follow in the course of the year. Orders for the limited special series will be accepted from the fourth quarter of 2021.

"Creator Brand" Mercedes-Maybach - expression of personal lifestyle

100 years ago Karl Maybach worked with the best specialist companies in order to meet the wishes of his customers and their style when building the bodywork. It combines technical quality with individual design and perfect craftsmanship. No two cars are alike. Each of the bodybuilders complements the outstanding technology of the chassis and the engines with high-quality equipment and hand-made bodies. Customers see their vehicles as their own creations with character. The result is elegant one-offs, masterpieces for connoisseurs and collectors.

The emergence of Maybach luxury is based on constant innovation - then as now. They need inspiration, outside impulses, from creative partners such as the early coachbuilders. For Mercedes-Maybach, ultimate luxury in modern form has always meant promoting creativity and making aesthetics an individual experience in harmony with technology.

Mercedes-Maybach trusts in the skills of its partners, a strong creative network of traditional companies, manufacturers and visionaries.

“We see ourselves as a creator brand,” says Philipp Schiemer. “Every vehicle has always been configured and manufactured with a downright artistic approach. Customers and producers have always been creative together - we want to keep this spirit and strengthen it in the future. "

Exclusive Maybach feeling for all areas of life

The special series of a champagne goblet from the silver manufacturer Robbe & Berking will also celebrate its premiere in the anniversary year. It is provided with the raised Maybach logo on the foot and the elegant engraving of the Maybach “100 Years” logo. The people of Flensburg take great care in creating matching water or long drink cups for connoisseurs and lovers of classics. Not just for Mercedes-Maybach owners.

The long-established company has also been building and restoring wooden sailing yachts at its own Robbe & Berking Classics shipyard since 2008. The longing for travel and beauty connects: “The large and small masterpieces of both companies are among the best of their kind worldwide. In both factories, unique works of timeless elegance are made from selected materials. In a perfection that arouses emotions not only among collectors and customers all over the world, ”says Oliver Berking, Managing Director of
Robbe & Berking silver manufacturer since 1874 GmbH & Co. KG.

Matching lifestyle accessories such as exclusive travel bags, leather goods, clothing, home and eyewear made in Germany enrich the world of customers - beyond the automobile. License partner Maybach Icons of Luxury develops the collections with the mythical brand emblem. Sustainably selected materials such as natural horn, precious woods, titanium, cashmere or types of leather that meet the highest environmental standards are used. The artfully staged understatement of the products conveys the fascination of the brand and fulfills the desire for personal expression"The goal of making the exclusive Maybach feeling tangible in as many areas of life as possible is what drives us," explains CEO Jutta Kahlbetzer.

The clip of the writing instrument is set with 100 optionally black or white diamonds, the tip of the cap is made of mother-of-pearl, and the body is painted in the blue metallic tone of the "Edition 100" vehicles.

Helping others find their own best possible future

Ulrich Schmid-Maybach, great-grandson of Wilhelm and grandson of Karl Maybach, stands in the fourth generation for the values of the family company: for creativity, innovation, quality and enthusiasm. “There is no greater luxury than knowing that you have the best,” says Schmid-Maybach. “Maybach's self-image as the 'ultimate inventor' goes back to its own history and the quality claim 'Made in Germany'. To that origin, to create something out of nothing, in order to transfer this wisdom to the following generations and to promote a culture of creativity and innovation. "

The Maybach Foundation, established by Schmid-Maybach in 2005, is a non-profit organization that pays tribute to the life's work of Wilhelm and Karl Maybach, for example with a virtual Maybach Museum. It also supports the next generation of innovators through mentoring programs. Wilhelm Maybach was sponsored by Gottlieb Daimler, which gave rise to the idea of the mentoring concept. It stipulates that the Maybach Foundation will concentrate on very talented young people who have developed special talent in a particular discipline. The Maybach Foundation is active in a wide variety of areas: society, ethics, science, technology, art and sustainability. Ulrich Schmid-Maybach explains: "Your best possible future helps others to find their own."

World-famous artists such as writer Paulo Coelho, musician Quincy Jones or painter and director Julian Schnabel support the foundation with the aim of transporting and inspiring the legacy of the founders into the future.

"For the future, we will deepen the dialogue with outstanding personalities such as artists, architects or companies," says Philipp Schiemer. “Just like them, we will not stop perfecting our products. The brand will reinvent itself once again after 100 years: sustainable, artistic, visionary. With more models - and these will also be electric. ”Traditions that live on. Luxury that doesn't end. And visions that pave the way for further innovations from Mercedes-Maybach.
