Audi Allroad - what is it? Mercedes E-Class All-Terrain 4 × 4²

You certainly all know the Mercedes E-Class All-Terrain, which is virtually the counterpart to the Audi A6 Allroad? Based on the W213 model series, Mercedes has had the E-Class in its range for some time, with a luxurious interior, the usual amount of space and the ability to enjoy everything away from the paved slopes. The main differences are some plastic trim all around, a suggested underride guard and an air suspension that jacks up the E-Class 2 cm higher. But did you know that a much more powerful predecessor paved the way for All-Terrain? Have you ever heard of the Mercedes E-Class All-Terrain 4 × 4² (2017)?

the idea comes from the G-Class 4 × 4²

A vehicle that comes directly from Mercedes and caused a sensation a good year and a half ago. Nevertheless we would like to present you the mighty "E" with a little delay. In terms of technology, however, the All-Terrain variant has 4 × 4² nothing to do with the current all-terrain. Rather, it harbors the technology of the madman in large part G-Class 4 × 4² and is based on an E 400 T model with 333 hp. A small team from design, construction, workshop and lots of "trial" put the vehicle on its feet. But of course the portal axles of the G-Class didn't fit so easily under the E. So something very special was developed!

more slope angle than the G-Class

The engineers developed new portal axles with a multi-link function, there were Unibal bearings from motorsport, a subframe on the front axle and a really stylish 20-inch off-road rim set with large tires in the format 285/50 R20. In addition, huge widenings on the body, small running boards on the side and finally an incredible 42 cm ground clearance. Compared to the 16 cm of the normal all-terrain, this is of course an announcement. Even the G-Class is still ahead of the curve. The All-Terrain 4 × 4² has an approach angle of 35,8 degrees and thus more than the G-Class with 28,8 degrees.

The fording depth of the All-Terrain 4 × 4² is even higher at 500 mm than that of the G-Class 4 × 4², which has to be content with 450 mm. In addition, a matt gray paintwork, All-Terrain 4 × 4² lettering and, unfortunately, the fact that it will probably remain with an absolutely unique piece. Nevertheless, the idea of Mercedes development engineer Jürgen Eberle and his team is really cool and this vehicle would definitely find its fans.
