The design of the GLA 35 is based on the AMG Line, but sets distinctive accents with independent elements. The AMG-specific radiator grille emphasizes family membership. Other distinguishing features are the trim on the slats in the outer air intakes and the front splitter in silver chrome or optionally in high-gloss black. In the side view, the tantalum gray painted and high-sheen 19-inch alloy wheels in 5-twin-spoke design (optional further designs in 19, 20 or 21 inches) and the door panels with inlays in silver chrome or in high-gloss black (optional) stand out. The rear view is dominated by the striking rear apron with diffuser insert, the AMG spoiler lip on the roof spoiler and the two round tailpipe trims on the left and right. The two-part narrow rear lights make the GLA rear appear particularly wide. The optional AMG Night package offers an even more individual appearance with design elements in high-gloss black, dark tinted glass from the B-pillar and black chrome-plated tailpipe trims.

Sporty interior with MBUX infotainment system

The high-tech ambience and the fully digital displays complement each other in the interior. Characteristic are the seat covers in ARTICO man-made leather / DINAMICA microfiber in black with red contrast stitching and red belts. The decorative elements in carbon structure and the ventilation nozzles with a red ring set further accents. Alternatively, equipment in ARTICO man-made leather black / neva white is available as standard. There are also four leather upholstery options. The combination of sporty design and elaborate details is also evident in the MBUX infotainment system with its innovative operating and display concept. Emotional staging underlines the comprehensibility of the operating structure and is characterized by brilliant 3D graphics in the highest resolution. Visually, the two displays merge under a common cover glass to form a widescreen cockpit, thus emphasizing the horizontal alignment of the interior design as a central element. Whether with a touchpad, touch control buttons on the steering wheel, touchscreen, voice input or gesture control: the operating concept is as versatile as it is flexible. Thanks to the innovative voice control - which can be activated with the call "Hey Mercedes" - the intelligent software recognizes and understands almost all commands from the infotainment areas and vehicle operation - even if they are said indirectly.

Fully digital instrument cluster with AMG-specific displays

With the instrument cluster, the customer can switch between the three AMG display styles "Classic", "Sport" and "Supersport". The "Supersport" mode with a central, round tachometer and bar-shaped additional information, which is located to the left and right of the tachometer, is particularly striking: in perspective, they extend three-dimensionally to the depth of the background to an artificial horizon. The driver can use the AMG menu to call up various special displays such as warm-up, set-up, G-Force and engine data. The touchscreen multimedia display also emphasizes the dynamic alignment with individual AMG displays such as the visualization of the driving programs or telemetry data. The center console in piano lacquer look with standard touchpad contains additional buttons with which the functions 3-stage ESP®, manual transmission mode and the optional AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension with adaptive adjustable damping can be controlled.

AMG steering wheel generation with optional steering wheel buttons

The multifunction sports steering wheel in nappa leather offers maximum ergonomics and intuitive operation. The steering wheel rim, which is flattened at the bottom, with perforated leather in the grip area and red contrasting stitching, impresses visually and haptically. The galvanized steering wheel shift paddles enable even sportier driving with manual gear changes. The optional AMG Performance steering wheels and the matching AMG steering wheel buttons are visibly and tactile for performance. The material is extremely grippy and, just like the 12 o'clock mark, quotes motorsport bonds. The steering wheel buttons allow fast and precise operation of specific driving dynamics functions - for focused and concentrated driving. When you look down, the sports pedal system made of brushed stainless steel conveys functionality and optics from motorsport. The rubber knobs provide extra grip. The floor mats in black with AMG lettering and edging in nubuck leather look underline the brand affiliation.

Data logger for use on the racetrack: AMG TRACK PACE

The optional personal race engineer AMG TRACK PACE is integrated in the MBUX multimedia system in order to analyze and improve driving skills in a targeted manner. The satellite-assisted GPS positioning system and data on lateral and longitudinal acceleration, accelerator and brake pedal position or steering angle help with this. All values are clearly displayed and can be read directly in the vehicle. The data is shown in the multimedia display, the instrument cluster and the optional head-up display. Well-known racetracks such as the Nürburgring or Spa-Francorchamps are already stored. It is also possible to record your own routes. The map display can be switched from 2D to 3D and updated online. The augmented reality function of MBUX also enables the ideal line of a saved race track to be shown on the multimedia display or the optional head-up display, so that the driver can improve his lap times as with a virtual instructor.

Reinforced body shell with increased torsional rigidity

Baby AMG with 306 PS - Mercedes-AMG GLA 35 4MATIC

Targeted stiffening measures on the front end of the body-in-white form the basis for the precise steering behavior as well as the tracking and camber stability of the chassis components, even in forced use. A so-called “push field”, a screwed aluminum plate under the engine, also increases the torsional rigidity of the front end of the GLA 35. Two additional diagonal struts at the front on the underbody also minimize torsion and thus increase rigidity.

Four-cylinder turbo engine with 225 kW (306 PS) performance

The 2,0-liter turbo engine impresses with its spontaneous response to accelerator pedal movements, high pulling power (400 Nm max.torque from 3.000 rpm), enormous joy in turning and an emotional engine sound. The crankcase made of high-strength and lightweight die-cast aluminum lowers the vehicle weight at a crucial point in terms of driving dynamics. A twin-scroll turbocharger is used for charging. It combines optimal responsiveness at low speeds with high performance gains at higher speeds. The high technological demands of the four-cylinder also underline numerous measures to increase efficiency. These include the variable valve control CAMTRONIC, the intelligent thermal management for cooling water and oil, the high-precision injection piezo injectors and the multi-spark ignition. In production, the patented CONICSHAPE® honing of the cylinders reduces internal engine friction and thus also increases efficiency.

Agile translated AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 8G dual clutch transmission

Baby AMG with 306 PS - Mercedes-AMG GLA 35 4MATIC

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 35G dual clutch transmission with eight gears also contributes to the agile and dynamic character of the new GLA 4 8MATIC. The gear ratios are selected so that the driver experiences a very spontaneous acceleration behavior in all speed ranges, combined with fast shift times and optimal connections when changing gears. The standard RACE START function enables maximum acceleration from a standing start and is a highly emotional experience. The short-term M mode by operating the steering wheel shift paddles in all driving programs and the "M" mode for manual gear changes via the shift paddles round off the functions of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 8G transmission.

Variable four-wheel drive AMG Performance 4MATIC

Dynamism, agility and performance - these three terms characterize the standard all-wheel drive of the new AMG GLA 35 4MATIC. The variable AMG Performance 4MATIC system combines the best possible traction with a lot of driving pleasure. The torque distribution is infinitely variable in accordance with the driving dynamics requirement. The spectrum ranges from pure front-wheel drive to a ratio of 50 to 50 percent on the front and rear axles. The torque is divided between the front and rear axles by a multi-plate clutch that is integrated into the rear axle transmission. The regulation takes place electro-mechanically. Influencing factors for the torque distribution are not only the driving speed, the lateral and longitudinal acceleration and the steering angle, but also the speed difference between the individual wheels, the gear selection and the accelerator pedal position. Compared to an electro-hydraulic system, the electro-mechanical control offers advantages above all to refine the driving dynamics primarily through the significantly more responsive and speed-independent actuation of the slats over the entire adjustment range. As long as the ESP® is activated, the 4MATIC system is in "Comfort" mode. As soon as the driver selects "ESP® SPORT Handling" or "ESP® OFF" using the button, the 4MATIC system switches to "Sport" mode for even more agile handling and a shifted limit area.

Large spread of vehicle characteristics

Baby AMG with 306 PS - Mercedes-AMG GLA 35 4MATIC

The five AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving programs "Smoothness", "Comfort", "Sport", "Sport +" and "Individual" allow a wide range of vehicle characteristics from comfortable to dynamic. Relevant parameters such as the response behavior of the engine and transmission are changed.

  • The "Smoothness" driving program is optimally tailored to slippery and icy road conditions, with reduced power consumption and a flat torque curve. Gentle gear changes and earlier upshifts support the stability-oriented driving impression.
  • The "Comfort" program stands for comfortable and fuel-efficient driving, including through very early upshifts. Chassis and steering are coordinated with comfort.
  • "Sport" and "Sport +" are characterized by agility and driving fun with sporty coordination of engine and transmission.
  • The "Individual" driving program offers the possibility to select and save the individual parameters according to personal preferences. In addition, the sailing function is also available in the "Reduced" and "Moderate" drive settings.

AMG DYNAMICS: more agility with high stability

As a new feature in the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving programs, the GLA 35 4MATIC has AMG DYNAMICS. This integrated driving dynamics control extends the stabilizing functions of the ESP® by agilizing interventions depending on the driver's wishes. In dynamic cornering, for example, a brief brake intervention on the inside rear wheel causes a defined yaw moment around the vertical axis. The effect: the GLA 35 4MATIC turns in spontaneously and very precisely.

The different versions of AMG DYNAMICS are labeled with the terms "Basic" and "Advanced". The new AMG DYNAMICS symbol with the corresponding addition is shown on the multimedia display when the drive programs are selected.

  • "Basic" is assigned to the "Smoothness" and "Comfort" driving programs. The GLA 35 4MATIC shows very stable handling with high yaw damping.
  • "Advanced" is activated in the "Sport" and "Sport +" programs. The GLA 35 4MATIC remains neutrally balanced. The lower yaw damping, less steering angle requirement and the increased agility support dynamic maneuvers such as driving on winding country roads

In the "Individual" driving program, the driver can individually set the AMG DYNAMICS levels. In addition, the setting of the AMG DYNAMICS levels can also be selected separately via the AMG steering wheel buttons, regardless of the driving program.

AMG chassis with specific components

The AMG chassis is designed for high cornering speeds with a low side inclination. In this way, the dynamic potential of the GLA 35 4MATIC can be fully developed. The high reserves in the border area guarantee pure driving pleasure - the vehicle remains safe and manageable at all times. A McPherson strut construction is used on the front axle. The wheel control is carried out by a wishbone below the wheel center, a shock absorber and a tie rod.
The special axle geometry reduces the drive influences on the steering for high comfort and agile handling. The aluminum wishbone reduces the unsprung masses and thus enables an even more sensitive response to the suspension. The AMG-specific front steering knuckle has a radially screwed brake caliper, a technology from motorsport. The 4-link rear axle is rigidly connected to the body via a subframe. Three wishbones and one trailing arm are used for each rear wheel, the combination of which enables maximum stability and agility.
With the optional adaptive AMG RIDE CONTROL damping system, the driver can choose between three different suspension controls. The spectrum ranges from comfort-oriented to sporty. The system works fully automatically and adapts the damping force to the road and driving conditions of each wheel depending on the driving situation. This takes place continuously in milliseconds in a widely spread damping map. The result: rolling comfort and agility are increased equally.

Stable high-performance brake system

The high-performance braking system ensures stable deceleration and short braking distances. 4-piston monoblock fixed calipers and 350 millimeter brake discs are used on the front axle, 1-piston floating calipers and 330 millimeter brake discs on the rear axle. The discs are ventilated and perforated on the inside to better dissipate the heat and prevent brake fading even in extreme use. The silver-painted brake calipers have black AMG lettering.

Steering with special rack and variable ratio

Baby AMG with 306 PS - Mercedes-AMG GLA 35 4MATIC

The speed-dependent, electro-mechanical parameter steering supports a sporty driving style with its direct steering behavior. It has a special toothed rack with variable transmission ratio and two characteristic curves: depending on which driving program the driver has chosen, it conveys a sporty, firm or more comfortable steering feel. The steering assistance decreases at high speeds and increases continuously at lower speeds. This means that comparatively little effort is required to steer at low speeds, while the best possible control of the vehicle is maintained at high speeds. The rigid bearing in the integral carrier binds the steering to the body even better, thus increasing steering precision.

AMG exhaust system with exhaust flap for sound modulation

The AMG exhaust system supports the sporty and everyday suitability of the new model. Depending on the driving program selected, the noise level ranges from emotional (Sport +) to subtle (smoothness, comfort, sport). The associated maps are controlled via an exhaust flap depending on the speed and load.
