2020 Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series with 730 PS! (C 190)

After last week first pictures appeared on the net and a short time later a video with Shmee150 (Tim Burton) in the leading role, the brand new Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series is now officially presented. The most powerful AMG V8 production engine of all time, the most expressive design, the most complex aerodynamics, the most intelligent mix of materials, the most distinctive driving dynamics: in the new Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series (combined fuel consumption 12,8 l / 100 km, combined CO2 emissions 292 g / km) [1] the Affalterbach developers have pulled out all the stops of their art of design. The new super sports car embodies the tradition-steeped roots of the brand in pure motorsport, as well as the many years of expertise in the development of complete vehicles that inspire in every respect. The result is 537 kW (730 hp) of power from a V8 engine with a flat crankshaft, combined with active aerodynamics and a design that stems directly from the current AMG GT3 racing car

730 hp 4,0 liter biturbo

2020 Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series with 730 PS! (C 190)

Black Series has stood for very special automobiles at Mercedes-AMG since 2006: uncompromisingly sporty, with expressive design and the most consistent technology transfer from motorsport to series production. Black Series models are exclusive automotive rarities. They are not designed to disappear into collector garages, but despite being approved for use in high-dynamic use on race tracks. In this tradition, the AMG GT Black Series sets a new highlight: it is the most powerful Mercedes-AMG with a V8 production engine. To underline the redefinition of the super sports car, the engine specialists in Affalterbach have once again extensively developed the tried-and-tested 4,0-liter biturbo engine - in addition to the well-known properties such as driveability, power delivery or torque curve. The specification was clear: Significantly more power than the previous top model of the AMG GT family, even more agile responsiveness, the highest degree of turning - the desired properties required a radical cure in the form of a new, flat crankshaft.

Optics and driving dynamics are extreme

2020 Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series with 730 PS! (C 190)

With the new GT Black Series, we have expanded our tradition of these exclusive models, which has been in effect since 2006, with a unique automotive highlight. After the excellent performance already offered by the GT R, it was clear to us that a Black Series variant of our sports car series had to be something absolutely special. The sixth variant of its kind is another AMG milestone and impressive proof of the extraordinary development expertise in Affalterbach. I am proud of the team that has put together a super sports car that is fascinating in many ways and is now the absolute top of our successful GT family. The performance, appearance and driving dynamics of the GT Black Series are at an extremely high level. This project was a great end to my job at AMG, for which I am very grateful, ”said Tobias Moers, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

Different designs of V8 engines

When designing a V8 engine, the designers have an important amount of creative freedom: the arrangement of the crank crank on the crankshaft. This influences the characteristics of the engine. Two variants are common in V8 engines: the "cross shaft", in which the crank pins of the four cylinder pairs are each at an angle of 90 degrees to each other ("cross-plane") and the AMG is used in all previous V8 engines, or the " flat crankshaft ”, in which all crank pins lie on a common plane with an offset of 180 degrees (“ flat plane ”).

If you look at a cross-plane crankshaft from the front, you can see the eponymous cross. The advantages of these crankshafts are the smooth running and the high torque at low speeds. The characteristic sound is also typical of the cross-plane V8 engine. In order to make optimal use of the cubic capacity and thus the performance potential, the AMG engine technicians for the 4,0-liter V8 biturbo engine have relocated the exhaust side to the hot inside V of the two cylinder banks of the V8 engine.

Uniformly swinging gas columns for even more performance

2020 Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series with 730 PS! (C 190)

Another way to increase performance is to use a flat crankshaft. With the Flat-Plane V8 engine, it looks like that of an in-line four-cylinder - except for the wider crank pins, which each carry two connecting rods in the V8. The ignition of the Flat-Plane-V8 jumps from one cylinder bank to the next, which further improves the gas exchange. The characteristic firing order with 180 degree crankshaft angle offset is 1-8-2-7 4-5-3-6. This creates gas columns that vibrate evenly in the exhaust tract and on the intake side, and their resonances can easily be used to increase performance. The biggest advantage is an even more agile response.

Most powerful V8 series engine from Mercedes-AMG

The new engine of the GT Black Series is based on the AMG 4,0-liter V8 biturbo engine with dry sump lubrication, but receives the new internal code M178 LS2 due to the numerous modifications. It produces 537 kW (730 hp) at 6.700-6.900 / min and provides a maximum torque of 800 Nm at 2.000-6.000 / min. New camshafts and new exhaust manifolds have been adapted to the new ignition sequence and further improve the gas exchange. As in the top model of the four-door AMG GT Coupé, the two twin-scroll exhaust gas turbochargers are roller-supported, which further optimizes their responsiveness. In the Black Series, however, the loaders are given a larger compressor wheel, so that the two loaders can convey a total of 1.100 kg of air per hour. For comparison: in the AMG GT R it is 900 kg / h. 7.000 rpm are not critical as permanent speed, at 7.200 rpm the speed is blocked off. And the larger charge air coolers guarantee that they can always keep the charge air temperature in the best possible range. The special position of the new engine is also documented by the engine badge, which is kept in black.

0-200 km / h in less than nine seconds

What does the engine do with the AMG GT Black Series? It gives it a completely independent character, which is reflected not only in the way it develops its performance, but also in its very special sound. And it enables very impressive driving performance: from a standing start, the two-door catapults to 3,2 km / h in 100 seconds and to 200 km / h in less than nine seconds. The top speed is 325 km / h.

Modified AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7G transmission

Power is transmitted to the rear wheels by the seven-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7G dual clutch transmission, which, like all AMG GT models, is located in a transaxle arrangement on the rear axle for optimized weight distribution. It was modified for use in the AMG GT Black Series and adapted to the increased torque of 800 Nm. The previous limits of switching performance and response time have been expanded and are therefore even more suitable for race tracks.

Overall, there is a clear differentiation of the overall driveability, since not only the response of the accelerator pedal and the engine is more agile, but also the shift programs, the starting behavior and the gear changes. The race start is now even more impressive, thanks to the increased starting speed, the more sensitive wheel slip control and the race track-compatible sports tires. In addition, the gearbox cooling was adapted to the increased requirements, and the gear ratios were also slightly modified.

2020 Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series with 730 PS! (C 190)

The connection between the engine and the transmission is made by the so-called torque tube. It is made of carbon and, at just 13,9 kilograms, is around 40 percent lighter than the already weight-optimized aluminum counterpart in the AMG GT. As a structural component, it creates an extremely flexurally and torsionally rigid connection between the engine and transmission within the transaxle drive train. It enables a very direct and dynamically favorable drive train connection and also contributes to the balanced weight distribution of the vehicle. The drive shaft that rotates in it is also made of lightweight carbon.

Sophisticated aerodynamics for exceptionally high driving dynamics

The sophisticated aerodynamics not only contribute to high driving dynamics and driving stability on fast circuits. As with the AMG GT R and AMG GT R PRO, the aerodynamics experts and the designers worked very closely together, because “Form follows function” applies more than ever to the Black Series.

The proximity to the AMG GT3 and AMG GT4 racing vehicles is optically and technically stronger than ever. It starts with the new, significantly larger cooling air intake, which comes directly from the AMG GT3 racing car. The radiator grille has vertical struts in dark chrome. Because the wheelhouse coolers are now also flowing directly through the central inlet, the two additional outer air inlets in the front apron could be omitted. Crescent-shaped flics optimize the airflow here, which not only increases downforce on the front axle, but also improves brake cooling. The Air Curtains direct the flow in the direction of the wheels. Together with the flics in front of the wheels, this reduced the drag coefficient and increased downforce. The new design language thus combines maximum cooling air efficiency with lower air resistance and increased downforce at the front.

The front splitter made of visible carbon can be adjusted manually in two stages (street and race - race only for use on the racetrack) and thus adapted to the conditions of different track requirements. In the extended state (Race position), a front diffuser is formed below the front end, which takes the form of an upside-down wing profile. Depending on the driving speed, this element lowers further due to the increasing negative pressure, which significantly accelerates the airflow on the underbody and creates the so-called Venturi effect, which also draws the car onto the road and increases downforce on the front axle. The driver feels the advantages in the steering: the Black Series can be steered even more precisely at high speeds in curves and drives even more stable. The vehicle reacts agile and with clear feedback in the steering wheel, especially when turning in quickly and with high lateral acceleration - and always remains easy to control. If the front diffuser is in the race position, the downforce on the rear axle can also be increased further by the new rear wing concept.

Bonnet with two large exhaust vents improves aeroperformance

A direct derivation from motorsport is also the new bonnet made of carbon with two large exhaust outlets made of black carbon surfaces. The large outlets lead the warm air that flows out of the inclined radiator package out of the engine compartment. This technology also comes from racing and increases overall downforce. At the same time, the air resistance drops and the air mass flow for the engine cooling is optimized. In addition, the air is directed around the A-pillars and side windows to the rear, where it increases the efficiency of the new rear wing concept. The seamlessly integrated Louvers (louvers) with five slats in the body color and exhaust vents behind the wheels in the front carbon fenders help to increase downforce on the front axle thanks to effective wheel arch ventilation. The flow around the vehicle is also optimized by the new, significantly larger and wider side skirts with elements made of black carbon fiber, which merge into vertical blades at the front and rear. Additional cooling air ducts are integrated in the side sill panels for brake cooling on the rear axle.

Rear wing concept with two floors

2020 Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series with 730 PS! (C 190)

The rear view is characterized by the new rear apron with a large diffuser, the two round double tailpipe trims on the left and right, the side wheel arch vents and the innovative rear wing concept. Both wing elements are made of carbon, can be mechanically adjusted and thus adapted to different track conditions. The second, lower wing profile could be particularly small and narrow because it ideally flows into the air from the front end. The wing supports made of matt black lacquered carbon, which were specially designed after extensive simulations, also increase aerodynamic efficiency. They are screwed to the black carbon tailgate.

Another detail is equally interesting: the movable flap in the upper wing. Depending on the driving situation and the selected AMG DYNAMICS mode, this active aerodynamic element is electronically controlled by 20 degrees and improves the longitudinal and lateral dynamics. In a flat position, it reduces drag for faster top speed. In the steep position, the flap improves braking behavior and cornering stability through increased downforce values on the rear axle.

There are four different control strategies, depending on whether AMG DYNAMICS Basic, Advanced, Pro or Master is selected. Some of these strategies also include vehicle dynamics detection, for example Master: The flap is permanently steep and extends up to 250 km / h. It pulls in from 250 km / h in order to reach the top speed more quickly thanks to the reduced air resistance. However, if the driver brakes hard or turns into a curve, the flap immediately returns to its extended position in order to optimize braking and cornering through increased downforce and air resistance. The driver can also use a separate button in the center console to retract or extend the flap.

Underbody almost completely covered

2020 Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series with 730 PS! (C 190)

The aerodynamic precision also extends to the now almost complete underbody paneling, which not only has to meet aerodynamic but also thermal requirements (heat dissipation). The flat underbody is equipped with specially designed longitudinal fins. In elaborate precision work, these air guide elements have been optimized so that the rear diffuser is optimally flowed to. The overall package accelerates the flow of air and thus significantly increases downforce. All measures are coordinated and interact with the new rear wing concept. All measures result in a downforce level of well over 400 kilograms at 250 km / h.

Light and stable carbon wherever you look

The topics of “intelligent material mix” and “lightweight construction” are reflected in the light-weight carbon roof, which is lowered in the middle, and the carbon tailgate with a small spoiler edge and enlarged rear window made of lightweight thin glass. Speaking of perspective: the laminated glass windscreen also consists of thin and therefore light glass. The wrapped gear carrier made of carbon fibers is another exclusive Black Series component. Additional carbon shear fields in the stem, underbody and rear stiffen, together with the lightweight integral support and the carbon tunnel cross, the entire body structure made of aluminum and thereby bring even more stability to the body. The elements form a coherent network and increase the high driving precision of the Black Series in the sum of all driving maneuvers. The carbon shear field underneath the engine is connected to the integral support and stiffens the entire area of the stem and the steering, bringing noticeably more precision into the steering and stabilizing the front axle. The integral support on the front axle consists exclusively of lightweight aluminum in the Black Series.

The standard ceramic high-performance composite brake system with black-painted brake calipers and white lettering is also characterized by low weight and high performance. Special brake pads and brake discs as well as a further developed brake cooling guarantee optimal and fading-free deceleration with sensitive metering options. The standard forged light alloy wheels also help to save weight.

AMG coilover kit with adaptive adjustable damping

The double wishbone concept guides the bike with high camber and track rigidity. This enables fast cornering speeds and provides the driver with optimum road contact in the cornering area far above. To reduce unsprung masses, wishbones, steering knuckles and wheel carriers on the front and rear axles are made entirely of forged aluminum. The spherical bearings on the upper and lower wishbones of the rear axle come directly from motorsport. Due to their design, they have no play, which means that the track and camber do not change even under high loads. As a result, the AMG GT Black Series can be steered more precisely, gives clearer steering feedback and thus also increased cornering performance.

2020 Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series with 730 PS! (C 190)

As in the AMG GT R, an AMG coilover kit with adjustable spring preload is used in the Black Series, the technology of which has been adapted to the special requirements in extreme circuit use with high damping forces. The technology known from motorsport is combined with the continuously variable, adaptive damping system AMG RIDE CONTROL. The system is electronically controlled and automatically adjusts the damping on each wheel to the current driving situation, speed and road conditions. The damper characteristics are modulated quickly and precisely via separate valves for the direction of tension and compression in the dampers. These valves are new, are also based on racing technology and react even more agile to quick suspension suggestions. Hardening of the damper rate, for example in curves or when braking, effectively reduces roll movements. The continuous adjustment of the damping to the respective speed always guarantees the best possible contact with the road, even at higher speeds, and thus contributes to greater safety.

In addition, the driver can adjust the characteristics of the adaptive damping system by pressing a button in the AMG DRIVE UNIT or using the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving programs. There are three levels: "Comfort", "Sport" and "Sport Plus". The conflicts of objectives could be resolved even better with a further developed logic. "Comfort" and "Sport" are the right choice for public roads. In “Sport”, the damping is tighter with a sportier body connection and less comfort - and can also be selected for race tracks if the road conditions are slippery due to wet conditions. "Sport Plus" is ideally suited for use on race tracks, but there is a special feature: the system automatically recognizes the quality of the road surface, i.e. whether you are driving on a flat Grand Prix track like Hockenheim or a wavy slope like the Nürburgring-Nordschleife. It then automatically adapts the level of electronic damping in “Sport Plus”. To develop this logic, the Black Series was tuned to a wide variety of track types and the adaptation perfected.

Carbon also reduces the weight of the chassis

2020 Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series with 730 PS! (C 190)

A double adjustable torsion bar stabilizer made of light carbon is used on the front axle. The delivery state is the short, i.e. tight connection. The counterpart on the rear axle is made of steel, can be adjusted in three ways and saves weight thanks to its hollow tubular construction. It can be adjusted one level harder (short connection) or softer (long connection) from the delivery state "in the middle". The carbon push field in the underbody of the rear supports high driving precision. This light and high-strength element stiffens the rear structure and thus brings even more stability to the body. The electronically controlled, dynamic engine and transmission mounts received a new set-up to further increase agility, with high-precision response and clear feedback.

Other chassis measures include the wide track at the front and rear as well as the manually adjustable camber on the front and rear axles. In this way, exceptionally high camber values can be set, which only serve to increase performance on closed roads in racing.

Together with MICHELIN, a Pilot Sport Cup 2 R MO tire specially designed for the Black Series was developed. As usual in racing, this sports tire is available exclusively for Mercedes-AMG in two mixtures: The MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 R MO1A is fitted as a so-called "soft compound" as standard, the side flank of which adorns the silhouette of the AMG GT Black Series . A “hard compound” is also offered as a retrofit option for racetrack operation at higher temperatures. In addition to the name MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 R MO2, this tire mix, which is available from the AMG Performance Center, is marked with the typical motorsport sticker of the French tire manufacturer. The dimensions are 285/35 ZR 19 at 10 J x 19 and 335/30 ZR 20 at 12 J x 20 at the rear.

Grip to nine: the AMG TRACTION CONTROL

For use on closed routes in ESP OFF mode, the AMG TRACTION CONTROL offers the driver the opportunity to be individually supported in controlling the immense driving power of the Black Series - and this without any ESP braking intervention. The level of support can be fine-tuned, providing the perfect help for every driver and every track condition. The AMG TRACTION CONTROL has been elaborately matched to the requirements of the new Black Series and makes it possible to preselect the slip on the driven rear axle in nine stages. As with the GT3 racing vehicle, the control is carried out exclusively via corresponding maps in the engine electronics and without any intervention in the ESP system.

2020 Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series with 730 PS! (C 190)

It is operated via a separate rotary control in the center console, which can also be operated with racing driving gloves at its central position in the dashboard if necessary. Depending on the setting, more or less slip is allowed on the rear wheels - very helpful in different road conditions. Level one is programmed for driving in wet conditions with high safety reserves. Level nine allows maximum slip on the rear axle. The respective setting is shown on the rotary control itself and in the central display of the instrument cluster.

The AMG development has a major advantage over conventional systems: It works with the help of a friction estimator and other data that are processed by a control unit in a fraction of a second. Depending on the selected AMG TRACTION CONTROL level, the maximum permissible traction slip of the rear wheels is calculated. If the wheels reach this slip value when accelerating, the engine power is modulated by the traction control so that the value is not exceeded and the vehicle continues to accelerate with this specified slip. The system algorithms were consequently designed as a two-manipulated variable model and regulate not only the drive torque of the engine, but also the degree of locking of the electronic differential lock.

Orange as an exclusive contrast color

2020 Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series with 730 PS! (C 190)

The interior concept emphasizes the top position of the AMG GT Black Series: Exclusive nappa leather is combined with sporty microfiber DINAMICA in black and orange contrasting topstitching. The instrument holder and the newly designed lightweight door panels, which have now been equipped with pulling loops instead of handles, are covered with black DINAMICA microfiber. Additional orange contrasting topstitching, matt black carbon trim and the Night Package interior also set striking accents. The AMG bucket seats made of carbon (not available for the USA, Canada and China) combine low weight with optimum lateral support. The Black Series is equipped with AMG Performance seats as standard in the USA, Canada and China. The interior is also optionally available with contrasting topstitching in gray.

Displays with AMG-specific displays

2020 Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series with 730 PS! (C 190)

The AMG GT Black Series receives the fully digital instrument displays of the AMG GT family with a 12,3-inch instrument cluster in front of the driver and a 10,25-inch multimedia monitor on the center console. The instrument cluster offers different designs with the three AMG-specific display styles "Classic", "Sporty" or "Supersport". In the "Supersport" view with a central tachometer, there is extensive additional information, such as a request to shift up in manual transmission mode, the so-called "Shiftlight". The visualizations in the multimedia display make it possible to experience other vehicle functions, including through animated representations of the driver assistance, vehicle and communication systems.

Just a tap away: display buttons in the center console

The innovative, colored display buttons in the V-shaped center console integrate the display and control of transmission logic, chassis, ESP, exhaust system, rear wing flap and start-stop function. The display keys in TFT technology show their function via intuitively understandable symbols and can be operated with just a tap of the finger. Because they still have a mechanical pressure point, they can also be operated with racing gloves. The display buttons are supplemented by the two rocker switches for driving programs and volume control of the audio system.

Control in no time at all: the AMG Performance steering wheel

The AMG Performance steering wheel is also a takeover from the AMG GT family. It is characterized by the sporty design, the flattened shape with a strongly contoured rim and the intuitive operation. The steering wheel rim is completely covered with DINAMICA microfiber and the steering wheel badge bears the AMG logo exclusively with the Black Series lettering. The aluminum steering wheel gearshift paddles enable even sportier driving with manual gearshifts. With the integrated touch control buttons, the displays of the instrument cluster and the multimedia display can be operated intuitively by swiping the finger horizontally and vertically.

The AMG steering wheel buttons with the round rotary control and integrated display as well as two vertically positioned, colored display buttons with switches are also standard. The AMG driving programs can be controlled via the right rotary control. The selected setting is shown on the color LCD display, which is integrated directly into the control dial.

2020 Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series with 730 PS! (C 190)

With the two freely assignable display buttons and the additional switches on the left side, additional AMG functions can be operated directly on the steering wheel. This means that the driver can fully concentrate on dynamic driving without having to take his hands off the steering wheel. The desired function is shown on a display icon, and the driver can set it using the associated tip switch. This means that the two individually preferred AMG functions can be precisely defined and the settings changed with just a tap of the finger.

The AMG Night Package interior is also standard. Here, shift paddles, steering wheel spokes, seat clips in the optional AMG performance seat in high-gloss black and the door sills are made of brushed black stainless steel, which further emphasizes the sportiness.

With the optional AMG Track Package even closer to racing

The AMG Track Package is available as an option in many markets (only in conjunction with the AMG carbon bucket seats, not for the USA, Canada and China). It includes a rollover protection system, enclosed 4-point seat belts for the driver and front passenger and a 2 kg fire extinguisher (both features are designed exclusively for use on the racetrack). The screwed, lightweight titanium tube cage of the rollover protection system consists of a main bar, a belt attachment strut, two rear struts and a diagonal rear cross. The system further increases the already excellent vehicle rigidity and thus has a positive influence on the driving dynamics of the vehicle. It also increases passive safety.
