New Mercedes-AMG GT2 expands customer racing program!

Mercedes-AMG is consistently expanding its Customer Racing program: in the 2023 season, a GT3 model will be added to the fleet of successful GT4 and GT2 vehicles from Affalterbach. The new Mercedes-AMG GT2 is the most powerful homologated racing car in the twelve-year history of the customer sport program. As usual, the GT2 offers the extremely high level of safety of AMG racing vehicles and comes up with many new racing technologies. Thus, the GT2 variant stands out as an attractive overall package, especially for ambitious amateurs. With the presentation of the new model, Mercedes-AMG is underscoring its claim to also assume a leading role in international GT2 racing.

  • Mercedes-AMG GT2 available in the 2023 season
  • Most powerful homologated Customer Racing vehicle from Mercedes-AMG
  • Expansion of the range alongside GT3 and GT4 racing vehicles

The performance and sports car brand from Affalterbach is opening a new chapter in customer racing with the Mercedes-AMG GT2. The racing car closes the gap between the Mercedes-AMG GT3 and the Mercedes-AMG GT4. While the GT3 is increasingly being driven by professionals and the GT4 is primarily the entry point into the world of GT racing, the GT2 is primarily aimed at the target group of gentleman drivers. With the GT2020 regulations presented in 2, the Stéphane Ratel Organization (SRO) has created an attractive platform for them with more and more international racing events.

The outstanding feature of the new Mercedes-AMG GT2 is its maximum performance level: with 520 kW (707 hp), the new member of the Customer Racing family is above the GT3 level - both in terms of horsepower and top speed. The power source is the AMG 4,0-liter V8 biturbo engine with a flat crankshaft. Power is transmitted via a sequential six-speed racing gearbox with modified gear steps. As with all GT models, the transmission is transaxle mounted on the rear axle and connected to the engine via a torsionally and torque-rigid carbon fiber torque tube. The chassis features fully configurable motorsport shock absorbers and adjustable anti-roll bars.

Exterior with familiar design language

The exterior of the Mercedes-AMG GT2 speaks the same expressive design language as the other customer racing vehicles from Affalterbach: From the wide front with the large cooling air intakes to the muscular rear, every detail is designed for performance. The carbon bonnet has a large exhaust air opening and so-called louvers are integrated into the carbon fenders on the front axle, which also have an influence on the aero performance.

Another aerodynamic highlight of the Mercedes-AMG GT2 is a completely newly developed rear wing, which is held by a distinctive gooseneck mount. The large single-stage wing is adjustable in many ways and contributes significantly to precise handling. As is usual with AMG Customer Racing vehicles, the GT2 variant is characterized by reliable driveability. This means that even inexperienced drivers can quickly build up confidence. An important new development for racing is the wheel attachment: The Mercedes-AMG GT2 has an innovative central locking system. This allows the forged 18" AMG light-alloy wheels to be changed even faster and more reliably during the pit stop.

Functional racing ergonomics prevail in the cockpit of the Mercedes-AMG GT2. An innovation in the driver's central field of vision is the latest generation DDU (Digital Display Unit). The fully programmable display system has a high-resolution graphic display. As a result, it can be operated intuitively and is very user-friendly. Another exclusive innovation is the new multifunction steering wheel, which Mercedes‑AMG developed together with the sim racing experts from Cube Controls. It offers a new level of ergonomics, functionality and control.

Security concept from GT3 & GT4

For optimal occupant protection, the Mercedes-AMG GT2 uses the groundbreaking safety concept that is also used in the GT3 and GT4. These include, among other things, racing-specific assistance systems such as the multi-adjustable traction control or the latest generation of motorsport ABS. The vehicle interior is protected by a steel roll cage bolted to the aluminum space frame. The carbon driving safety cell has a 6-point safety belt and customizable ergonomic seat foam. Safety nets, a salvage hatch in the roof, a carbon safety tank and a powerful motorsport fire extinguishing system complete the extensive safety equipment of the Mercedes-AMG GT2.

The customer teams receive the fully developed Mercedes-AMG GT2. The new vehicle will be further extensively tested in the coming weeks - including on racetracks for the next GT2 European Series season. In addition to various test races, endurance testing under racing conditions is also planned. Teams using the Mercedes-AMG GT2 enjoy the full support of Mercedes-AMG's global Customer Racing program. As with the GT3 and GT4 models, the motorsport team of experts at HWA AG ensures technical support. As a development and production partner of Mercedes-AMG, HWA AG carries out all maintenance and inspections. The market launch of the Mercedes-AMG GT2 will take place during the 2023 motorsport season.

New Mercedes-AMG GT2 expands customer racing program!

“The Mercedes-AMG GT2 is another milestone in our customer racing program. With this, we are once again emphasizing our commitment to GT sport and are further expanding our commitment by entering a new segment of GT sport. Now that the GT3 sector has become increasingly professional and the GT4 sector is established as an entry-level class, we are opening up new possibilities with the Mercedes-AMG GT2. In doing so, we are addressing an extended group of customers and can thus also offer those interested in the GT2 area the high quality and comprehensive support of our customer racing program. The racing series for this vehicle category have increased enormously in scope and importance in the past two years. In this dynamically growing market environment, we are launching a highly attractive package with the Mercedes-AMG GT2 and are once again demonstrating the performance of our brand.”
Christoph Sagemüller, Head of Mercedes-AMG Motorsport

“The Mercedes-AMG GT2 contains all of the experience that we have gained in our successful Customer Racing events over the past few years. In addition to proven GT3 and GT4 features, we have also integrated completely new racing technologies specially developed for the GT2. The result is the most powerful homologated racing car we have ever built. The Mercedes-AMG GT2 enters a new speed range. At the same time, we have managed to ensure that even gentleman drivers who do not race every weekend can always master this enormous power confidently and safely. I am very pleased that we can now also offer the customer teams a top product in this up-and-coming segment together with our maximum support services.” Stefan Wendl, Head of Mercedes-AMG Customer Racing
