Emotional appearance, sure-footed off-road terrain and future-oriented technology: the EQC 4 × 4² (N 293) shows that electrification at Mercedes-Benz already goes further than the road network. A small team of passionate developers has built the tangible technology carrier on the basis of an EQC 400 4MATIC. The technical highlights include the multi-link portal axles and the staging of a powerful sound in the interior and exterior. The headlights become “loudspeakers” because they also function as loudspeakers.

The EQC 4 × 4² is an extreme electric car. With it, Mercedes-Benz would like to test the limits and show that you can think of electromobility not only urban, but also off-road. The one-off was developed by a cross-departmental team led by development engineer Jürgen Eberle, who has already put the E 400 All-Terrain 4 × 4² on the studded wheels. “Our aim is to harmonize contemporary luxury, sustainability and emotionality. The EQC 4 × 4² shows how much fun sustainable mobility can be. This is where electromobile high-tech and a fascinating customer experience, thanks to MBUX and over-the-air updates, meet the mountains. In short: electric, progressive luxury goes off-road ”, says Markus Schäfer, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG; responsible for Daimler Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars COO. "The tangible study shows up close that, in addition to a passion for electromobility, we at Mercedes-Benz also have a clear claim to leadership in this area and that we will make this even more emotional in the future."

more than twice as high as a standard EQC

With the technology carrier EQC 4 × 4², Mercedes-Benz is demonstrating that a thirst for adventure can be combined with lifestyle and sustainability. Driving through sand in desert areas and on the beach or through impassable scree and streams in the mountains are among the possible uses. The mature genes of the series vehicle not only enable high reliability and comfort, but also trailer operation and the installation of a roof rack. With a roof tent and rubber dinghy, the most remote places can be reached - and if you start early in the camp, other adventurers will not be awakened. At 293 millimeters, the EQC 4 × 4² is more than twice as high as a standard EQC above the floor (140 millimeters). Even a G-Class is 58 millimeters lower. The fording depth increases by 15 centimeters to 40 centimeters. The conversion to portal axles enabled the enormous ground clearance: In contrast to conventional axles, the centers of the wheels are not at the same level as the center of the axles, but are much lower down on the axle heads thanks to the portal gearbox. Or vice versa, the whole vehicle moves up. The 4 × 4² chassis is connected to the same mounting points on the body as the series chassis.

Approach angles - 31,8 degrees at the front and 33 degrees at the rear

They are just as impressive Approach angle - 31,8 degrees in the front and 33 degrees in the back. For comparison: a conventional G-Class has an approach angle of 28 degrees. The newly programmed off-road driving programs use the high-performance logic of the current GLC models. This enables, for example, an improved torque curve when starting off on loose ground with targeted braking intervention. In combination with the 285/50 R 20 tires, there is an impressive surefootedness in the field. The striking visual appearance is rounded off by the matt gunmetal metallic film and the black fender flares. Another highlight of the EQC 4 × 4² is the sound experience with its own sound world. The acoustic staging includes sounds that give the driver feedback when the system is ready and when the vehicle is parked, as well as an interactive, emotional driving sound. This is influenced by various parameters such as the position of the accelerator pedal, speed or recuperation. Using intelligent sound design algorithms, the sounds are calculated on the amplifier of the sound system in real time and reproduced by the loudspeakers in the interior.

with Acoustic Vehicle Alert System

In the series EQC, loudspeakers in the bumpers reproduce the legally prescribed exterior noise (Acoustic Vehicle Alert System; AVAS). The EQC 4 × 4² has a specially composed, more powerful AVAS and uses the headlights as the external loudspeaker. Because the sound experts at Mercedes-Benz used the space available in the headlight housings creatively - the “loudspeaker” was born. The EQC 4 × 4² is already the third model in the 4 × 4² family from Mercedes-Benz. The G 500 4 × 4² was even built in series from September 2015. And in 2017 Mercedes-Benz put many SUVs in their place with the E 400 All-Terrain 4 × 4² study. If we get more information, there will of course be an update for this report.
