Nordschleife record from the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series

Nordschleife record from the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series

GT12,8 racing driver Maro Engel on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring impressively demonstrated: With an officially measured and notarized time of 100: 2 min for the 292 kilometer long route (measurement without the straight line for section T1) and 3: 6 min for the 43.616 kilometer long route (measurement with the straight at section T20,6), the new V13 bolide is placed in the top group of the “sports car” category with road approval and number one among the completely standard, not subsequently modified models.

Maro Engel used all the options that the new Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series offers as standard: the most powerful AMG V8 series engine of all time with 537 kW (730 hp), the sophisticated aerodynamics and the extensive adjustment options for the chassis. The front splitter made of carbon fiber was pulled out in the "Race" position, the lower and upper wing blades of the rear spoiler were each adjusted in the middle position. The adjustable AMG coilover kit with adaptive adjustable damping has been lowered by five millimeters at the front and three millimeters at the rear in order to further enhance the venturi effect of the front diffuser. The camber was adjusted to the maximum possible values of minus 3,8 degrees on the front axle and minus 3,0 degrees at the rear.

When it came to the adjustable anti-roll bars, racing pro Engel opted for the hardest of the three possible settings and the 35-year-old set the nine-stage AMG traction control between positions six and seven, depending on the section of the route. AMG GT Black Series customers can also take advantage of all of these variation options. This also applies to the fully standard MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 R MO tires with the “soft compound” mixture, which was developed together with development partner Michelin especially for the top athlete in the AMG GT series. Not only the standard AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system, but also the factory-provided track package with rollover protection system and four-point seat belts ensured the highest possible level of safety.

"It was really an impressive ride"

"It was really an impressive ride“, Said Maro Engel after completing the record lap. "With speeds of up to almost 270 km / h on the Kesselchen track or well over 300 km / h on the long straight at Döttinger Höhe, the AMG GT Black Series is significantly faster than my GT3 racing car. To finally drive around the Nordschleife in a standard road vehicle in 6: 48,047 minutes, with these track conditions, that's really awesome. Like my GT3 racing car, the AMG GT Black Series also offers a lot of setting options, with which I was able to work out a set-up that was specially tailored for me."

In terms of aerodynamic efficiency, the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series also has many parallels to the racing car. A direct derivation from motorsport, for example, is the carbon bonnet with two large exhaust air outlets. These guide the warm air, which flows off the inclined radiator package, out of the engine compartment. This also increases overall downforce, as does the sophisticated rear wing concept and the largely closed underbody.

"It's really impressive how much downforce the Black Series generates and how confidently and reliably it can be driven at the absolute limit. I take my hat off to the developers from Affalterbach for what they have done here. And I'm really happy that I was able to demonstrate this fascinating engineering skill with this great lap time“, Says Maro Engel.

Like AMG development engineer Demian Schaffert, who set a new lap record with the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC + on the same day, so the conditions were not quite ideal for Maro Engel either. Because when the GT3 professional drove through the light barrier of the timing system on November 4, 2020 at 17.02:20,832 p.m., not only 3 kilometers of Green Hell were behind him in the dim light. The GTXNUMX professional set the best time with an outside temperature of seven degrees Celsius and an asphalt temperature of ten degrees Celsius. In addition, some passages of the extremely demanding routes were not XNUMX percent dry. The fast lap times were precisely measured by the neutral experts of "wige SOLUTIONS". An independent notary also certified the proper condition of the vehicle and the measurements.
