Mercedes-Maybach S-Class: A new definition of luxury!

Since its market launch in 2015, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class has been delivered around 60.000 times worldwide. In 2019, around 12.000 vehicles, more Mercedes-Maybach S-Classes were sold than ever before. In China, the growth rate was double-digit. In addition to China, the main sales regions in recent years have been Russia, South Korea, the USA and Germany. The new Mercedes-Maybach S-Class builds on this success story. In turn, it combines the perfection and high-tech solutions of the Mercedes-Benz flagship, which was introduced just a few months ago, with the exclusivity and tradition of Maybach. The wheelbase, which is 18 centimeters larger than the long Mercedes-Benz S-Class, benefits the rear entirely. Thanks to the standard executive seats and the chauffeur package, the rear compartment becomes a comfortable place to work or rest. There are also exclusive details such as large wooden trim parts on the back of the front seats and between the two rear passengers. Sales of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class will start in various markets this year. Germany will follow in spring 2021.

Mercedes-Maybach S-Class

Mercedes-Maybach S-Class: A new definition of luxury!

"With the new Mercedes-Maybach S-Class we are underlining the modern approach of the exclusive product portfolio shortly before the 100th anniversary of Mercedes-Maybach Automobile," emphasizes Dirk Fetzer, Head of Product Management Mercedes-Maybach. “As in the past, our customers today have high demands on exclusivity and individuality, elegant design and workmanship in the highest perfection, and this on the basis of cutting-edge technology. In the areas of comfort, safety and design in particular, the new Mercedes-Maybach S-Class offers unique selling points in the highly competitive luxury segment. "

classic three-box sedan

The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class (length / width / height: 5.469 / 1.921 / 1.510 millimeters) is a classic three-box sedan. Special features of the front are the independent bonnet with its chrome-plated fin and the Mercedes-Maybach radiator grille. Its high recognition value lies in the vertical, three-dimensional decorative bars. The MAYBACH word mark is elegantly integrated into the chrome frame of the grill. The rear doors are wider than on the model brothers, and there is a fixed triangular window in the C-pillar. A Maybach brand logo on the C-pillar emphasizes the exclusivity. On request, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class has electrically powered comfort doors at the rear.

The special appearance of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class also includes a two-tone paintwork with dividing line, which is applied by hand according to the highest quality criteria. It is an optional extra, as is the DIGITAL LIGHT headlamp technology. This enables new functions, such as the projection of auxiliary markings or warning symbols onto the road. DIGITAL LIGHT has a light module in every headlight with three extremely bright LEDs, whose light is refracted and directed with the help of 1,3 million micro mirrors.

The interior: lots of space and a high level of comfort in the rear

The interior of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is based on the completely new interior design of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The dashboard, center console and armrests form a sculptural unit that appears to float over a spacious landscape. Up to five screens are available. A 12,8-inch OLED central display as a high-tech command center is standard on board. On request, there is a 12,3-inch 3D driver display with a three-dimensional representation of other road users and striking depth and shadow effects. The special look of the driver's display in the Exclusive display mode underpins the special position of the Mercedes-Maybach. The surround of the round instruments is in the brand's typical rose gold color.

This color is also used in the active ambient lighting (special equipment), i.e. in the animated LED running lights with intelligent comfort and safety functions. With rosegold white and amethyst glow, the active ambient lighting includes two new color worlds. The “Welcome Fond” pre-show welcomes the passengers with a special light show. The adaptive rear lighting has its premiere in the Mercedes-Maybach. In several ways, it adapts to the wishes of the occupants: In addition to the brightness, the size and position of the light spot can also be adjusted. At the same time, a wide spread between precise work and relaxed lounge light is possible.

Mercedes-Maybach S-Class: A new definition of luxury!

There is also plenty of classic luxury on board: the large trim parts of the front seats are new. Noble wooden bowls nestle around the back of the driver and passenger seats. When equipped with the first-class rear, a similarly distinctive wooden trim sits between the two rear passengers. The wheelbase, which is 18 cm larger than the long Mercedes-Benz S-Class, benefits the rear entirely.

A clear indication that the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is ideal for chauffeur operation is the standard equipment with executive seats on the left and right and the chauffeur package. With the executive seats, the passenger can adjust the seat surface and the backrest independently of each other. Using the heel rest on the front seat and the electrically extendable leg rest creates a continuous, comfortable lying area for a pleasant sleeping position. The adjustment range of the legrest has been extended by approx. 50 mm compared to the previous series. Another new feature is the calf support's massage function as part of the rear seat comfort package. Another convenience is the neck and shoulder heating in the rear.

The infotainment system MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience): even more personal and intuitive to use

Mercedes-Maybach S-Class: A new definition of luxury!

The second generation of MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience), the adaptive system introduced in 2018, is being launched in the new S-Class. What is unique about MBUX is that it is networked with a wide variety of vehicle systems and sensor data. On the up to five screens, some with OLED technology, brilliant views make it easier to control vehicle and comfort functions. The options for personalization and intuitive operation have become much more extensive. The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class can also be equipped with the MBUX interior assistant in the rear if required.

Digital world premiere of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class

The MBUX interior assistant recognizes numerous operating requests. He interprets the direction of view, hand movements and body language of the occupants in order to assist with automatic vehicle functions depending on the situation. The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class can also record the movements and gestures of the rear passengers with the help of 3D laser cameras in the headliner. For example, the seat belt feeder for the outer seats extends automatically as soon as the MBUX interior assistant detects the intention to reach for the seat belt by moving a hand. The exit warning function has also been expanded and can register that a rear passenger wants to leave the vehicle.

Cultivated power for efficient propulsion

The engines of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class come from the Mercedes-Benz portfolio and are partially electrically supported. The electrification is carried out by an integrated starter generator (ISG) of the second generation. This provides a boost of up to 15 kW, supports efficient "sailing" when driving at a constant speed, makes the start-stop experience even more comfortable and the drive system more efficient overall. All-wheel drive is always standard.

The 9G-TRONIC transmission was further developed for the adaptation of the ISG. The electric motor, the power electronics and the transmission cooler have now been moved into or onto the transmission. In connection with the ISG, the entire two-part belt drive could be omitted because an electric refrigerant compressor is used. This means that the interior can be air-conditioned efficiently and comfortably even when the engine is not running (start-stop and sailing phases).

An exhaust system with Otto particle filter (OPF) tailored to the drive is used to clean the exhaust gases. Pressure and temperature sensors as well as lambda probes of the latest design ensure efficient exhaust gas cleaning in the entire map.

The chassis: comfortably tuned and remarkably handy

The AIRMATIC air suspension with continuous adjustable damping ADS + is standard. With the help of DYNAMIC SELECT, the driver can change the properties of the drive, ESP®, chassis and steering individually. The selection is made via a control element at the lower end of the central display. DYNAMIC SELECT offers its own MAYBACH driving program, which is entirely focused on driving comfort.

The optional rear axle steering increases the maneuverability in the city. This reduces the turning circle by up to two meters. Customers have the choice between two variants: rear axle steering 4,5 ° and 10 °. Instead of 13,4 meters, the turning circle is then 12,4 or 11,4 meters.

The optional, fully active E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL chassis on a 48-V basis scans the road with a stereo camera and smooths out long-wave obstacles. It also offers additional protection in the event of a side impact, as the vehicle is raised. The stress on the occupants can be reduced because the impact is thus directed to particularly resistant structures in the lower part of the vehicle.

The noise comfort: exceptionally quiet and low-vibration

The new luxury sedan is based on the very good NVH basis (noise, vibrations, harshness, noise, vibrations, roughness) of the new S-Class generation. The more far-reaching NVH measures are aimed primarily at the fund. Additional insulating foam is used in the area of the rear wheel arch. The additional fixed triangular windows in the C-pillar, in the immediate vicinity of the heads of the rear passengers, were given thicker laminated glass. Noise-optimized tires with foam absorbers are available on request.

Active driving noise compensation is making its debut in the company. The system reduces unwanted, low-frequency noises in the interior with the help of anti-phase sound waves. The bass speakers of the Burmester® high-end 4D surround sound system are used for playback.

The safety: even more protection against and in the event of accidents

Especially in the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, the focus has always been on safety in the rear compartment. The innovative rear airbag in the standard equipment can significantly reduce the stress levels on the head and neck for the seated occupants in the outer rear seats in severe frontal collisions. In the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, the rear passengers of a limousine now also benefit from an automatic seat belt feeder for the first time. It indirectly prompts you to buckle up and at the same time makes this process more convenient. The belt feeder is integrated in the adjustable backrest of the executive seat and is therefore always in the right position for the passenger.

New and expanded driver assistance systems provide relief in everyday life through situation-appropriate support for speed adjustment, distance control, steering and lane changes. The driver can stay fit longer and reach his destination more safely and comfortably. In the event of danger, driver assistance systems can react depending on the situation and thus reduce the severity of possible collisions or even avoid them entirely.

With the DRIVE PILOT, highly automated driving at Mercedes-Benz is expected to go into series production from the second half of 2021. On suitable sections of the motorway and when there is a high volume of traffic, the DRIVE PILOT can offer the driver to take over the driving task initially up to the legally permitted 60 km / h.

The brand: Defining the luxury of the future again and again for 100 years

Mercedes-Maybach is a luxury legend that keeps reinventing itself. From a historically grown understanding of exclusivity and high quality, Mercedes-Maybach is constantly redefining the luxury of the future. Today more than ever, Mercedes-Maybach stands for “Sophisticated Luxury”. The brand combines the cutting-edge technology and perfection of Mercedes-Benz with the exclusivity and elegant luxury of MAYBACH.

The new Mercedes-Maybach S-Class builds on a unique tradition of exclusive and representative vehicles from the Mercedes-Benz and Maybach brands. Maybach Motorenbau GmbH presented their first vehicle at the Berlin Motor Show in 1921: the Maybach Type W3 with a body from Auer from Cannstatt.

Mercedes-Maybach S-Class: A new definition of luxury!

In 1930 the Mercedes-Benz 770 "Great Mercedes" (W 07) was presented, which was replaced in 1938 by the W 150 series of the same name. In the 1950s, the brand returned to this top segment with the Mercedes-Benz 300 (W 186 and W 189). The next vehicle with a highly representative character is the Mercedes-Benz 1963 (W 600) in 100. The luxurious Pullman sedans of the S-Class 140 series (presented in September 1995) and the 220 series (from 2000) carry these ideas forward into the new millennium.

In 2002 what was then DaimlerChrysler AG revitalized one of the most exclusive German automobile brands with the Maybach luxury limousines of the 240 series. The S-Class of today's Mercedes-Maybach brand finally premiered in 2014 in the 222 series. It sets standards with the Mercedes-Maybach S 600 Pullman (2015) and S 600 Pullman Guard (2016).
