More protection against and in the event of accidents

Especially in the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, the focus has always been on safety in the rear compartment. This is also demonstrated by the innovation of the rear airbag: In the event of severe frontal collisions, this standard equipment can significantly reduce the stress levels on the head and neck for the seated occupants in the outer rear seats. New and expanded driver assistance systems provide relief in everyday life through situation-appropriate support for speed adjustment, distance control, steering and lane changes. The driver can stay fit longer and reach his destination more safely and comfortably. In the event of danger, driver assistance systems can react to the danger depending on the situation and thus reduce the severity of possible collisions or even avoid them entirely.

The executive seats in the rear have

  • Seat cushion airbags. When the seat belt is on, they prevent slipping under the lap belt.
  • belt bags (Special equipment). This inflatable webbing distributes the acting forces over a larger area.
  • belt feeders (Special equipment) make it easier to buckle up.
  • The Belt comfort switch switches the retraction force of the seat belt to a particularly comfortable level after buckling up. Belt tensioners and force limiters, which help reduce the stress levels on the occupants, are standard.
  • The Rear airbags for both rear passengers are a novelty.
  • side bags are also available at the rear, especially as protection in the event of a serious side impact.
  • window bags. Arranged in the area of the roof frame, they cover a large area of the head impact area for front and rear passengers.

PRE-SAFE drives in critical driving situations® The rear seats are also positioned in a more favorable position in the event of a crash. The active multicontour seats in the rear seat comfort package enable additional protection in combination with PRE-SAFE®: If a critical driving situation is detected, the PRE-SAFE® System increase the pressure in those air chambers that are located in the side bolsters of the multicontour seats. In this way, the rear passengers can be fixed better and pendulum movements are reduced.

Comprehensive safety on the front seats too

Mercedes-Maybach S-Class: A new definition of luxury!

The driver and front passenger each have a three-point seat belt with pyrotechnic retractor tensioner and belt force limiter, and as part of the standard PRE-SAFE® the electrically reversible belt retractor including the automatic belt adjustment that can be switched off. When driving, the belt is particularly gentle on the body. In the event of a severe frontal collision, PRE-SAFE® Impulse reduce the forces acting on the driver and front passenger. The system tightens the front belts at all three attachment points and thus holds the occupants back in the seat at an early stage.

The driver and front passenger also have front airbags, and the driver also has a kneebag. The windowbag and sidebag are triggered on the side facing the impact when the central electronic control unit identifies a side impact. In order to detect the lateral acceleration, the central crash sensor is supported by satellite sensors which are arranged outside in the area of the B-pillar base. Pressure sensors in all four doors also help predict the severity of the impact.

In addition, the preventive and partially reversible side restraint system PRE-SAFE is standard® Impulse side installed to protect the front occupants. Together with the well-known PRE-SAFE® PRE-SAFE provides protection concepts for frontal and rear crashes® Impulse side a kind of virtual crumple zone that extends around the vehicle.

Mercedes-Maybach S-Class: A new definition of luxury!

Since only a limited crumple zone is available in the event of a side impact, PRE-SAFE® Impulse side move the affected driver or front passenger away from the acute danger zone before the crash, as soon as the system detects an imminent side collision. For this purpose, air chambers in the side bolsters of the front seat back are inflated in a split second. In the event of an impending side impact with another vehicle, the body can now also be raised by the E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL suspension (optional extra) within a few tenths of a second. This deflects the impact on particularly resistant structures in the lower part of the vehicle. In the event of a severe side impact, the new center airbag (equipment depending on the country) is positioned between the driver and front passenger and can thus reduce the risk of mutual head contact. It is integrated in the center of the vehicle in the back of the driver's seat. The center airbag can be triggered depending on the situation when a severe side impact is detected.

For the first time, frontal airbags for both rear passengers

The rear airbag is a novelty at Mercedes-Benz. In the event of a severe frontal collision, it can significantly reduce the stress levels on the head and neck of the outer rear occupants. The rear airbag uses a new inflation concept to inflate and position the airbag. The special tubular structure is quickly inflated with compressed gas from a cold gas generator. The space in between fills with ambient air. The tube structure itself has a capacity of around 16 liters. The effective volume in between is up to 70 liters.

An airbag in the seat belt: the beltbag

The beltbag is an inflatable belt strap that can reduce the strain on the chest in the event of a frontal collision and thus reduce the risk of injury to rear passengers. If the crash sensors detect a severe frontal impact, the airbag control unit triggers the inflation and inflation of the beltbag. A gas generator then inflates the multi-layer belt strap with tear seams to almost three times its width. Due to the larger area now available, the force that acts on the occupants is better distributed. The beltbag is used like a classic seat belt. The design of the belt strap differs from the standard belt and is very comfortable to wear thanks to the particularly soft belt edge.

An airbag for the seat: the seat cushion airbag

The seat cushion airbag is located under the seat cushion, but on the seat shell, which is moved by the seat mechanism. This means that the airbag is always in the right position for the occupant. In the lying position, without additional measures, in the event of an accident there would be the risk that the passenger's pelvis could slip under the belt strap on a flat seat surface (so-called submarining). This can be prevented by the seat cushion airbag, because it lifts the front area of the seat upholstery accordingly.

The driver assistance systems

The basic functions of the systems of the standard driver assistance package can be found here. The most important new features of the systems in the Maybach S-Class are as follows:

Active distance assistant DISTRONIC

This intelligent system can automatically maintain the preselected distance to vehicles in front on all types of roads - freeways, country roads and in the city. They are new

  • Predictive speed adjustment to speed limits
  • Reaction at a driving speed of up to 100 km / h (previously: 60 km / h) to stationary vehicles that are on the road
  • Choice of the dynamics of DISTRONIC in MBUX, independent of DYNAMIC SELECT

Active steering assistant

It assists the driver in following the lane at speeds of up to 210 km / h. Are new

  • Lane detection also with 360 ° camera
  • significantly increased availability and cornering performance on country roads
  • increased lane centering on motorways
  • Situation-specific off-lane driving style (e.g. formation of an emergency lane, but also orientation at the edge of the lane on country roads without center markings)

Traffic sign assistant

In addition to conventionally signposted speed limits, it also recognizes gantries and construction site signs. There are new warnings about driving over a stop sign and a red traffic light.

Active lane keeping assistant

Active Lane Keeping Assist uses a camera to detect when lane markings and the edges of the lane are being driven over at speeds of between 60 and 250 km / h, and helps the driver to avoid leaving the lane unintentionally. If there is a risk of collision with identified road users in the neighboring lane, for example overtaking or oncoming vehicles, the system also intervenes. Are new

  • the reaction to the edges of the road, e.g. a sod
  • particularly intuitive intervention via the steering
  • setting the sensitivity via a menu (early, medium, late)
  • the addition of the hazard display with the help of active ambient lighting and the augmented reality head-up display

Active lane change assistant

Active Lane Change Assist provides the driver of the new S-Class with cooperative support when changing lanes to the neighboring lane. The lane change to the left or right is only supported if, according to the sensors, the neighboring lane is separated from your own by an interrupted lane marking and no vehicles have been detected in the relevant safety area.

Active emergency stop assistant

The Active Emergency Stop Assist brakes the vehicle in its own lane to a standstill when it detects that the driver is no longer intervening in the driving process while driving. This works even if Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC with Steering Assist is not switched on. Further innovations:

  • Belt tensioners and brake jerks are the last pointers before braking is initiated
  • Optional lane change by one lane (at 80 km / h, no obstacles in the neighboring lane)

ATTENTION ASSIST

The standard system can recognize typical signs of fatigue and severe inattentiveness on the part of the driver and issues a warning to prompt him to take a break. The additional microsleep warning is new. It analyzes the driver's blink of an eye using a camera in the driver's display (only in conjunction with certain optional equipment). The microsleep warning is active from a speed of 20 km / h.

Active Brake Assist with an intersection function

Active Brake Assist uses the sensors installed in the vehicle to register whether there is a risk of collision with vehicles ahead, crossing or oncoming vehicles. In the event of an impending collision, the system can warn the driver visually and acoustically. If the driver brakes too weakly, it is also possible to support the driver by increasing the braking torque in line with the situation and to initiate autonomous emergency braking if the driver does not react. The turning function (including pedestrians crossing when turning), the extension of the crossing function to cross-country routes (up to 120 km / h instead of 72 km / h) and the warning and braking for oncoming traffic are new.

Active Blind Spot Assist and exit warning function

The Active Blind Spot Assist can warn of side collisions optically and when the indicator is activated, also acoustically at speeds of around 10 to 200 km / h. If the driver ignores the warnings and nevertheless initiates a lane change, the system can intervene to correct the lane at the last moment at speeds above 30 km / h by braking on one side. In addition, the exit warning function can signal that a vehicle (including bicycles) is driving past in the critical area when the vehicle is stationary before getting out. This function is available when the vehicle is stationary and up to 3 minutes after the ignition has been switched off. What is new is the addition of the danger display with the help of active ambient lighting (also for the exit warning). Thanks to the cameras of the MBUX interior assistant, a hazard display can even be made when the driver or front passenger just move their hand towards the door handle.

Evasive Steering Assistant

The evasive steering assistant can support the driver if he wants to evade a road user recognized by the system in a dangerous situation. In the new S-Class, in addition to standing and crossing pedestrians, pedestrians and vehicles in the longitudinal direction as well as cyclists are now taken into account. The speed range has been extended to 108 km / h (instead of 72 km / h), and support is now also provided on cross-country routes.
