At a time when minivans were very popular, Mercedes-Benz with the R-Class (internal designation: series 251) tries to raise this vehicle category to a completely new level. With the first real premium van that started at the end of 2004, the main aim was to appeal to wealthy families. Back when SUVs were still in their infancy and the van segment was booming, Mercedes tried to do the balancing act between the family carriage and the lifestyle vehicle with the R-Class by giving the R-Class a very modern design, which we believe is much fresher and more modern than the lines of the then ML-Class, the predecessor of today's GLE. But the R-Class became a flop, and even in America, which was very minivan-friendly at the time, this vehicle sold very slowly. Shortly after the introduction of this series, it became clear that the time of the vans had expired and that the SUV competition would prevail in the future and oust the large sedans from the market. After a generation, the model was no longer able to find too few fans to avoid falling victim to the red pencil.

But for all fans and drivers of the Mercedes R-Class, SCL Global Concept has launched a tuning kit that has it all. It includes a body kit with a new hood, which has been equipped with two powerful power domes, a newly designed front bumper, a completely new rear bumper, fat fender flares, side skirts and two rear spoilers, one of which acts as a roof spoiler and the other is attached below the rear window. There are also four fat fake exhaust pipes at the rear including an indicated diffuser and a lower wire mesh grill on the front of the car. The presentation trolley shown also has turbine rims in 20-inch format that are completely chrome-plated and also come from the Russian tuner SCL Performance. Last but not least, the starless grill was kept completely in black and the taillights were tinted dark. With this, the boys and girls from SCL turn the family crate R-Class into an absolute macho mobile which immediately signals: "Here I am"! In our opinion, it is almost a bit too much tuning for the actually solid R-Class, because it somehow doesn't quite fit the peaceful character of the giant. Nevertheless, the car would probably attract a lot of looks at a tuning show.

nothing changes in terms of engine technology

No matter whether you want to give the body kit to an R 280 CDI with 190 PS or an already fat R 63 AMG with 476 PS, with this type of tuning every R-Class becomes an absolute show car. With the powerful engines that deliver between 190 and 476 hp, the large van is anything but a traveling dune on the highway, and no matter whether you have it with rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, you can easily use the limousine on the highway and keep up with SUV models.

Who would want to buy such a body kit?

We strongly assume that the body kit can be brought to men and women in Russia and the USA, because the wealthy upper class attaches great importance to the individualization of their vehicles. But it is also possible that more and more buyers for the body kit can be found in Germany and Western Europe, since an R-Class is now also affordable for a younger audience, who is usually enthusiastic about tuning.
