Colourful, loud and bright – the MINI Recharged Lakwena is an electrified work of art that literally bursts with color and pattern. London artist Lakwena Maciver has redesigned the 1986 vehicle chosen by MINI according to the year of her birth, transforming the classic Mini into an ambassador for the MINI Recharged project, using the existing engine from MINI partner Recharge Heritage Ltd. was exchanged for a new electric drive. After the model by British fashion designer Paul Smith, it is the second work of art to be created together with the sustainable upcycling project.
MINI Recharged Lakwena
Bold statements and bright colors are at the heart of Lakwena's work. She primarily paints in public spaces and in this way brings art to people who might not otherwise have access to it. The cooperation with MINI began two years ago with this approach. Most recently, she painted a previously gray high-rise facade in Munich during the IAA Mobility 2021 and expressed joie de vivre and the central motto of MINI with her mural "BIG LOVE".
For the London-born artist, British culture is very much influenced by the exchanges of long-distance travel that many people have undertaken. The design of the MINI Recharged Lakwena celebrates the diverse journeys and paths of different people with colorful patterns and colors. “I hope this MINI Recharged makes people feel good and puts a smile on their faces. This MINI is a festival of colors for cultures,” explains the artist. This makes the work of art an ideal match for this year's European Championships, which will be held from August 11th to 21st all over Munich. The competitions, in which athletes compete in nine different disciplines, stand for mutual respect, tolerance and diversity.
Premium Partner of the European Championships 2022
The BMW Group, with its brands BMW, BMW Motorrad and MINI, is the official Premium Partner of the European Championships 2022. As part of the diverse sporting event, MINI will be presenting the MINI Recharged Lakwena for the first time on August 11th on Königsplatz. Together with other MINI special editions, the BIG LOVE Collection from MINI celebrates diversity. These include the special models by Paul Smith and David Bowie for MINI's 40th anniversary in 1999. MINI fans can discover a different, special MINI model in the partner area with the "Car of the day" on all eleven days of the event and take selfies in front of the share the concise slogans of the vehicles BIG LOVE for diversity and cohesion.
MINI represents the BMW Group as a sponsor of the beach volleyball and climbing competitions on Munich's Königsplatz. Atmospheric sounds from a MINI that has been converted into a DJ booth will accompany the exciting matches in the beach volleyball arena. In the MINI Pavilion on Lenbachplatz, the European Championships will be accompanied by a varied program covering all aspects of fitness, nutrition, mindfulness, art and music – from August 12 to 17, 2022, the MINI Recharged Lakwena will be there. At the end on Saturday evening, MINI celebrates diversity with a big BIG LOVE UNITED party.
