2020 Nissan study "Proto Z" as 400Z inherits the 370Z!

Nissan is finally launching the new generation of the Z sports car. In 2021, the 400Z should succeed the 370Z. The successor will be around 400 hp, which explains the model name. And the “Proto Z” study now gives a near-series outlook on the athlete. Nissan is currently celebrating 50 years of "Z" and the Porto Z is said to be the DNA of the Fairlady Z (S30; known as Datsun 240Z) and bring it back to the present from the 300ZX. That's why the Japanese design team chose the yellow paint for the prototype. Of course, the stylists wanted to incorporate modern details into the classic design, which we think the head of design Alfonso Albaisa has done extremely well. The long bonnet as well as the beveled teardrop-shaped LED headlights interpret the first "Z" representatives and the rectangular radiator grille refers to the current 370Z model. However, he also has oval grill slats with him.

state-of-the-art LED headlights

The mentioned LED headlights have two semicircles, which are a tribute to the Japanese 240ZG of the 70s. And the roof line also shows a relationship. It slopes down discreetly towards the rear and the roof and rear window then unite to form a large area at the rear. The rear view is extremely modern and equipped with narrow LED rear lights and a black band. The rear apron has a “Z” logo, a diffuser and round tailpipes. In combination with the massive rear fenders and the distinctive beads on the side, the Proto Z looks aggressive and stocky. On the other hand, the sideline and the front are more filigree. 19-inch alloy wheels in a multi-spoke design rotate in the wheel arches, allowing a generous view of the yellow-painted brake calipers. The interior, on the other hand, is less classic.

Sports seats with yellow applications

It features sports seats with yellow applications for the driver and front passenger, there is a massive center console and the driver grasps an elegant three-spoke steering wheel and looks at a fully digital cockpit with a dominant rev counter. The 400Z Proto Z has installed a touchscreen directly under the narrow air vents to control the infotainment and navigation system, and gear selection is carried out using a stub gear knob via six manual gears on the rear wheels. By the way, the name of the 350Z and 370Z was previously based on the displacement. Whether the 400Z will actually be called that is questionable. At least there is a high probability that it will not get a 4-liter displacement. But the name could be based on the performance of the three-liter twin-turbo V6 (VR30DDTT).

Engine from the Infiniti Q50 and Q60 Red Sport

The engine is known from the Infiniti Q50 and the Q60 Red Sport and in the "Proto Z" has an impressive 400 hp. It should go from 0 to 100 km / h in under five seconds. Incidentally, Nissan would like to do without a hybrid or plug-in hybrid version and an E-400Z completely. But hopefully not a Nismo variant! With around 500 hp, it could best be the highlight of the series as a roadster. And now the bad news: Nissan will not offer the 400Z in Europe.  If we receive new information in a timely manner, there will of course be an update for this report.
