Nordschleife record: Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC +!

With the 2021 model year, which has been in production since September 2020, the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC + has become even faster on the legendary Nordschleife of the Nürburgring. Thanks to newly coordinated elastokinematics and other fine-tuning measures, AMG development engineer Demian Schaffert set a new record time and put the four-door coupé from Affalterbach in first place on the official best list in the “luxury class” category. The former racing driver undercut his own previous lap record from autumn 2018 by 2,4 seconds. The officially measured and notarized values are: 7: 23.009 min for the 20,6 km long route variant (measurement without the straight line on route section T13) and 7: 27.800 min for the 20,832 km long complete route (measurement with the straight line on route section T13) . The Nürburgring GmbH officially lists exactly this variant and this lap time on its homepage. Mercedes-AMG has thus convincingly recaptured the crown in this class after just three months.

The 470 kW (639 hp) Mercedes-AMG sports car went on the hunt for technical records as standard. The AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC + has the best prerequisites for this: its equipment includes driving dynamics highlights such as the fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC + all-wheel drive, the active rear-axle steering, the electronically controlled rear-axle limited-slip differential and the agility program AMG DYNAMICS. The Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2 tires fitted during the record run, which any customer can order as an option, enabled the last ounce of grip for optimal traction and powerful acceleration out of the 73 corners of the “Green Hell”. The aeropackage, which is also optionally available and mounted on the record-breaking vehicle, also increases stability at higher speeds and reduces the drag coefficient.

"Even though I have been involved in the development of our GT 63 for a number of years now, it is always impressive what wide spread we have been able to achieve with this exclusive vehicle. This is especially true after the recent slight revision. On the one hand, the four-door coupé is comfortable and equipped with many intelligent safety features for daily driving, on the other hand, it offers this extremely high level of driving dynamics and precision, which we have now been able to demonstrate again on the demanding Nordschleife“, Says Demian Schaffert.

Sections of the route with partly damp spots

The conditions on the extremely demanding course in the Eifel were anything but good, as some sections of the route even had damp spots. With outside temperatures of seven and asphalt temperatures of ten degrees Celsius, Schaffert optimally exploited the full potential of the top model in the four-door GT family. In the RACE drive program, the AMG RIDE CONTROL + suspension specifically tightens the damper identification and the steering characteristic becomes more direct. In the master position, the agility program AMG DYNAMICS also uses all the options of the fully variable all-wheel drive as well as the responsive control of the electronic limited slip differential for the highest possible dynamics. As an additional safety measure for the driver, the vehicle was equipped with a bucket seat and four-point belts. The record lap was precisely measured by the neutral experts from "wige SOLUTIONS". An independent notary also certified the proper condition of the vehicle and the lap time.

Why there are two lap times on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife

The Nürburgring-Nordschleife is considered the most difficult race track in the world and Mercedes-AMG includes it in every new development. A record lap is therefore the most demanding test of the qualities of a sports car. The times are determined for two route alternatives - 20,6 and 20,832 kilometers in length.

The 1997-kilometer lap has been the measure of all things since 20,6. The specialist magazine sport auto from the publishing house Motor Presse Stuttgart drives this route as part of their so-called "Supertest". For historical reasons, the short straight at grandstand T13 - from the junction from the Nordschleife to the Grand Prix track to the exit of the Grand Prix track onto the Nordschleife - was not included in the time measurement. The starting line is therefore in a northerly direction at the end of grandstand T13, while the finish line is in a southerly direction at the beginning of grandstand T13. This means that no complete lap is measured after the flying start. The total length of the route is 20,6 km.

The official Nürburgring lap was added in 2019. It was introduced by the operating company “Nürburgring 1927 GmbH & Co. KG” and is 232 meters longer because: The start and finish lines are identical here, also on section T13, so it will be a full Nordschleife lap 20,832 kilometers driven and measured with a flying start.

Numerous requirements must be met for the recognition of both record times: In addition to timing with calibrated light barrier technology, official record attempts and attempts to achieve a lap time are always accompanied by a notary. In addition to monitoring the timing, there is also a notarial inspection of the vehicles and tires. The classification of the vehicle classes is based on the official categories of the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA).
