Porsche takes off - victory in the virtual 24 hour race of Le Mans

[Display] It was over 50 years ago when Porsche achieved overall victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. But that's exactly what the young Porsche Coanda eSports team managed to do in the GTE class at the 2020 Hours of Le Mans, which was held virtually for the first time in 24. The works drivers Joshua Rogers from Australia and Mitchell de Jong from the USA, together with the former Porsche juniors Ayhancan Güven from Turkey and Laurin Heinrich from Germany, took second place at the virtual 24 Hours of Le Mans. The four reached the finish on the digital circuit of the 24-hour race just 21,1 seconds behind the victorious LMP2 vehicle from Team Redline. However, the result was enough for the team to win overall on the rFactor 2 simulation platform.

After the race, Porsche Coanda Esports Racing boss Philip Stamm said with both relief and euphoria: “The virtual Le Mans series is one of the most prestigious championships in sim racing. From that point of view, winning the title is crazy for us. It shows how hard we've worked through a season that started off a bit difficult for us“. About the second place in the individual classification, Stamm said: "Of course it's a shame to finish second at the end of a 24-hour race with a deficit of almost 20 seconds. But we are at the beginning of a new year and hope that many more beautiful results will follow."

Not an easy victory- The Porsche team had to contend with some adversities!

On the way to the overall team victory, the Porsche Coanda Team had to endure a few shocking moments. On the one hand, there were drive-through penalties, i.e. driving through pits at a limited speed, and on the other hand server connection problems, which led to time losses through no fault of one’s own. The sister car, driven by Mack Bakkum from the Netherlands, Dayne Warren from Australia, Morris Schuring from the Netherlands and Porsche Junior Bastian Buus from Denmark, also had to deal with a number of setbacks during the 24 Heures of Le Mans and ultimately only managed sixth place enter space.

The course of the race!

Both Porsche Coanda racing cars initially started comfortably from the front row after having already proven their strength in qualifying. Joshua Rogers broke away from the second-placed driver by almost three quarters of a second and thus confidently drove to the pool position. Next to him, Dutchman Mack Bakkum started on the front row. The first turbulence came shortly after the start, when reigning Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen was able to seize the lead with a daring manoeuvre. A little later, however, Laurin Heinrich was able to take the lead after claiming second position in the scramble.

After about three and a half hours there was the first moment of shock. Due to a technical issue, Dayne Warren was disconnected from the server and dropped to 23rd place. He was later given a 250-second time credit for this, which catapulted him back into the top ten of the race. In the early evening there were server problems again, which led to race interruptions. It was not until 21:30 p.m. that racing was able to resume its regular course.

During the night the Redline cars really picked up speed and sat down the Porsches vacuum. Ayhancan Güven was initially able to defend his lead. However, there was some contact with the Redline cars, which resulted in a drive-through penalty and dropped Güven to ninth position. Just under two hours later, the Porsche, which was once again driven by Heinrich, managed to move up to second position again. But then there was the next drive-through penalty due to a so-called “unsafe release” during the pit stop. Heinrich, who returned to the track in sixth place after the penalty, had to start a new race to catch up.

In the morning there were more problems. The server crashed again and meanwhile increased the deficit of the Porsche team to more than two minutes. However, the competition has also been hit by problems. At 7:00 a.m. on Sunday, the leader, Max Verstappen, first fell back and then after another 90 minutes he was completely out of the race, which allowed the Porsche Coanda Team to move back into second place.

In the last two hours of the race, the number 20 Porsche Coanda team managed to halve the gap to Redline, so that the rear lights of the opponent could be seen. However, it was only enough for Rogers, deJong, Güven and Heinrich to place second in the individual rankings. In the meantime, the sister vehicle had to take another drive-through penalty for exceeding the track limit and finally crossed the finish line in sixth place.

Which game with Porsche vehicles do you recommend?

For those who prefer to jump straight into a Porsche and jet off, we recommend the Forza Motorsport game for Xbox or PC. The new vehicle models and routes for 2023 were announced in the current Developer Direct Showcase. Among others, the Porsche No. 11 John Fitzpatrick Racing 956 from 1983, a Porsche 911 GT2 RS from the model line 2018 and a Porsche 911 GT3 from 2021 will be there. Driving will be on tracks such as the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, the Silverstone Circuit and the Suzuka Circuit. Photo credit: Porsche
