The comeback of historical colors for all Porsche models

With the new options "Color of your choice" and "Color of your choice Plus", the Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur is expanding the range of special exterior colors for all model series. The focus is on the availability of typical Porsche colors that are already known from history. For particularly individual color requests, there is also the option of creating individual color tones according to customer requirements. "Exceptional paintwork is known from the history of our brand and is an important differentiating feature," says Alexander Fabig, Head of Customization and Classic. "With this offer we are reviving cult colors and expanding the extensive range of standard and special colors across all series by more than 160 shades."

"Color of your choice": the comeback of cult colors

In recent years, the demand for individually painted Porsches has risen sharply. As part of the new offer, Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur has significantly increased capacities in this area. A new color mixing bench was put into operation at the main factory in Zuffenhausen. There, the paint experts mix the desired colors from several dozen components to the milligram level.

Each batch is divided into two paint pots for the body and attachments. Most of the parts to be painted on the vehicle consist of aluminum, plastics and carbon / glass fiber composites. This material mix as well as the different application methods and drying temperatures require paints with a slightly different composition depending on the component. So-called batch comparison sheets are painted and serve as a color reference sample during the final acceptance of the vehicle.

"Color of your choice"

Porsche is not only expanding the range of colors, but is also restructuring it at the same time: “Color of your choice” was previously known as “individual paintwork”. Predefined colors that have already been technically approved by the Porsche paint experts fall into this category. These include, for example, maritime blue, star ruby and mint green. These colorful paints from the 90s enjoy cult status among Porsche fans. In the past they were offered for the 911 (type 964). As part of Porsche's sharpened individualization strategy, the legendary paint colors are now celebrating a comeback. Thanks to the “color of your choice”, current Porsche models can be painted in the eye-catching colors.

The range is very diverse and depends on the model series and production location. There are more than 911 additional paint colors to choose from for the 718 and 100 series. The Panamera, Macan and Cayenne have more than 50 options. With the Taycan, another 65 color tones complete the spectrum. The “color of your choice” can be ordered as part of the new car configuration in the Porsche Center. The lead time to delivery is around three months longer than with standard colors. The offer is expected to be integrated into the Porsche Car Configurator at the beginning of 2022. Online filter options, for example according to color families and background information on the individual colors, will follow gradually.

"Color of your choice plus": extensive feasibility study

The Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur goes one step further for particularly individual color requests: With “Color of your choice Plus”, the paintwork can be chosen almost entirely freely. This option is available for the 911, 718 and Taycan series.

The procedure: The customer gives the Porsche Center a sample in the color of their choice - basically anything is conceivable, from the handbag to the nail polish color. This template will be sent to Porsche AG. There is a separate feasibility check for each request, which can take several months depending on the effort.

First of all, so-called colorists deal with the recipe. These experts work out the color on the basis of the available paint components. The color tone is then further developed in several passes so that it corresponds to the pattern even under different light sources such as daylight or artificial light. The feasibility under production conditions on the body and add-on parts is then checked. It is also essential to define the layer thickness, which enables process-stable, reproducible and fault-free painting. Before the actual painting of the customer vehicle, at least one test body is painted in the respective color. If it turns out that the desired color cannot be achieved in accordance with the typical Porsche quality standards, Porsche will cover the costs of the feasibility check.
