The garage of a Norwegian couple tells Porsche history: a new Taycan 356S has recently been installed next to their 1959 4 Coupé. Martin and Ann-Mari Sundvoll-Noreng share a common love for air-cooled classics. But with the latest addition to their fleet - their very first new car - the Porsche-crazy Norwegians are opening a new chapter. In their hometown of Ski, about 20 minutes south of Oslo by car, the Sundvoll-Noreng couple's garage houses a 356 Coupé (built in 1959) as well as a brand new Taycan 4S. Two very different, yet equally important parts of the long and varied history of Porsche.

Like many other enthusiasts, the graphic designer Martin found his way into the Porsche world through more affordable Volkswagen. He recalls: “First I bought a VW Bulli from 1966 and then a Beetle. It was because of this car that I finally became aware of the 356 and the early 911. ”At first Martin really wanted a 356, but couldn't afford it. “And so it became a VW-based Speedster replica. But the prices for the original vehicles continued to rise. The first Porsche I bought was a 911 T that I found on eBay in the US. A lot had to be done about it. I was able to do most of the work myself, and now it is in top condition. "

The 911 was to remain in the permanent possession of the Sundvoll-Noreng couple, but Martin couldn't get the 356 that piqued his interest so many years ago. Finally he found a specimen in neighboring Sweden. The 1959 coupé was in solid, if not restored, condition. Martin decided to carefully renew the vehicle while preserving the patina of the car. Thanks to a lowered chassis and a new series engine, the 356 has been a reliable everyday vehicle since last winter, and it can even get a taste of racing every now and then.

“We use it a lot in the summer. Ann-Mari uses it to commute to work, ”says Martin. “We recently drove a small rally stage together at a large VW and Porsche meeting here in Norway. We've also been on a racetrack in the area. ”“ Not many people in Norway use their classics that way, ”adds his wife Ann-Mari. “Most of them load their cars onto trailers and take them to meetings. There the cars are taken from the trailer, only to be put back on afterwards. They don't really use these vehicles. But I think they are there to be driven. This is how you do it with a Porsche! "

When the Sundvoll-Noreng family announced their arrival, Martin and Ann-Mari had to reschedule: As much as they enjoy sitting behind the wheel of their 356, they had to admit that the back seat of a 60-year-old car is not the ideal place for a newborn is. They had been toying with the purchase of a Taycan for a long time.

The Taycan 4S as a new everyday vehicle

“When we saw the first pictures of this car, we were already thinking about buying it,” explains Martin. “And the more we found out about the Taycan, the more convinced we were.” Finally, they were able to pick up their Taycan 4S in “Carrara White Metallic” at the Porsche Center in Oslo. The electric athlete immediately became their new everyday vehicle. “At the beginning we always argued about who was allowed to go shopping with it,” Ann-Mari recounts with a laugh. "But now I always drive it."

This means that Martin, who is on the board of the Norwegian 356 Owners Club, has the grateful task of continuing to drive his beloved classic. “It's really something special to have this old Porsche and the latest model next to each other in the garage,” he emphasizes. “The two couldn't be more different - one famous for its ingenious simplicity, the other incredibly progressive. But despite these huge contrasts, you can feel a connection between the two cars when you drive them. That is the soul of Porsche. "
