Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup relies on renewable fuels

With the start of the 2021 season of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, the championship is relying on renewable fuels: As a first step, the international one-make cup uses advanced biofuels and so-called eFuels, which can significantly reduce CO2 emissions. As part of this lighthouse project, Porsche and project partner ExxonMobil are testing the suitability of renewable liquid fuels under tough motorsport conditions. The new Porsche 911 GT3 Cup with its high-revving, high-performance six-cylinder boxer engine serves as the ideal test laboratory for Esso Renewable Racing Fuels: its powerful 4,0-liter unit has already been tested for operation with renewable fuels. The aim is to gather important experience for possible further developments with regard to use in series vehicles in the future. The Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup takes place as part of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship.

Porsche and ExxonMobil are using a two-stage strategy when testing renewable fuels. In 2021, the participants of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup will go into the eight races of the season with a bio-based fuel mixture. The proportion of advanced biofuel is obtained from food waste products. Additional fuel components are added in order to achieve the required properties in terms of knock resistance and combustion behavior in the final fuel. An octane rating of approximately 98 is achieved.

In the course of 2022, the second step is expected with the introduction of an eFuel from the Haru Oni pilot project in Chile. Here, hydrogen is combined with carbon dioxide separated from the air to form methanol. With this eFuel-based Esso Renewable Racing Fuel, CO2 emissions can be reduced by up to 85 percent if it complies with the current fuel standard according to the necessary blending. In the pilot project, Porsche and ExxonMobil are working with other international partners to advance the development and potential future market readiness of synthetic fuels.

Oliver Schwab, Project Manager Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup

“The testing of new technologies in racing has a decades-long tradition at Porsche. We are proud to be able to take on a pioneering role for the entire company on the important topic of eFuels, ”confirms Oliver Schwab, Project Manager Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. “The Supercup is the first international racing series to use renewable fuel. Since our races take place as part of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship, we are particularly in the focus of the media, the public and other manufacturers involved in racing. As a pioneer in synthetic fuel, the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup takes on an important communication function for the importance of eFuels at Porsche. "

First fuel tests since the beginning of 2019

At the beginning of 2019, Porsche and ExxonMobil carried out their first fuel tests and gained experience. At the beginning of 2020, engine tests followed on the test bench as well as material compatibility tests with components of the fuel system and functional tests while driving under various external conditions. Racing fuel must also meet the special requirements of a set of regulations. With this in mind, Porsche and ExxonMobil have jointly developed the chemical, physical and technical specifications of the Esso Renewable Racing Fuel. ExxonMobil has taken on the final processing of the finished racing fuel.

Esso Renewable Racing Fuel will be used in all races of the Porsche Mobil 2021 Supercup in 1, including the roll-out in Zandvoort in the Netherlands and the two pre-season test days in Monza, Italy. A software update was made to optimize the interaction between the engine and fuel. The engine output of the new 911 GT3 Cup racing car remains unaffected.
