SIGNal design foiling on the Porsche Panamera!

US artist David Carson is a legend when it comes to graphic design. Decades ago, he questioned established styles and shaped an entire design era. The Texan is celebrated internationally for this. He has already designed a lot, but one thing has always been his dream since he was young: a Porsche fan would like to leave his business card on a car one day. Markus Schaeffler has now fulfilled his dream in a Porsche Panamera. The founder and owner of SIGNal Design from Schwäbisch Hall was able to use the expert knowledge of his team to create something absolutely unique. When David Carson saw “his” Porsche Panamera for the first time, joy was written all over his face. Markus Schaeffler went to Amsterdam, where the artist spent last summer, and went on a city tour with the artist. “Car design has fascinated me all my life. One of my favorites was a '73 Porsche 911 that I once owned but then sold,” says David Carson. “Working on a three-dimensional object is completely different from drawing. To see how different parts work together, to be able to look at something from different sides and from different angles. Compared to working in two dimensions, it's a completely different world."

David Carson is one of the big names in graphic design. The American experimented with new styles as early as the 90s and turned the known world upside down. In doing so, David Carson consistently disregards typographical and design rules. David Carson has found a second home in Europe. “European art allows more freedom, like life in Europe in general, I think. There is more appreciation for the abstract and new experimental ideas. Secretly, I think I'm European," says the native Texan. Incidentally, the 65-year-old had already relocated the headquarters of his company David Carson Design Inc. to Zurich in 2007.

The design actually fulfilled a lifelong dream of two people who share the same passion, because Markus Schaeffler is one of David Carson's big fans and even flew to New York in January 1997 for a book signing. He was accompanied by his longtime friend and companion Timo Wuerz, also an artist who has already implemented many joint projects with Markus Schaeffler. The two have brought the prestigious "Wrap-like-a-king" award from Las Vegas to Europe several times.

refined Porsche Panamera

This time the object should be the Porsche Panamera of an art lover from Baden-Württemberg. The SIGNal Design team in Schwäbisch Hall created almost 20 different designs. "The challenge lay in suddenly adapting the idea of an artist, who otherwise only works on flat surfaces, for a car, i.e. switching to three-dimensionality," reports Markus Schaeffler, founder and owner of SIGNal Design. “Even if the template seems torn, it should be right. That is our claim.” The special thing about all work by SIGNal Design: The foils are not only adapted and optimized on the computer, but directly on the car. This is the only way the result can fit 100% in the end.

But not only the three-dimensionality provided a challenge, but also the sheer size of the project. “David used to work with scissors and paper on a table. Today our object consisted of a five meter long car, which actually required a resolution of 300 dpi. The trick then was that we chose a lower resolution and thus achieved the size of the area. In this way we got David's style very well.” What began in 1997 with a brief meeting at a book signing in New York has now reached a new dimension, on different levels. Projects changed from two to three dimensions and two people have fulfilled a lifelong dream. Incidentally, the Porsche Panamera in David Carson livery can often be seen on the streets of Baden-Württemberg.
