Elegant and sporty: 2020 Polestar Precept design study

Polestar unveils Polestar Precept - a vision of future direction and a clear expression of Polestar's intentions as a brand. Precept combines new sustainable interior materials, innovations in the field of digital user interfaces and high design standards. The name “Precept” is representative of the direction of the contemporary electric performance brand. Precept is a manifesto for the future; a clear letter of intent. The car is an important milestone for Polestar as an independent brand and describes a unique design philosophy that is firmly anchored in the Polestar brand values: Pure, Progressive, Performance.

not a distant dream of the future

"Precept is an explanation, a vision of what Polestar stands for and the relevance of the brand," comments Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar. “The car is an answer to the clear challenges that our society and industry are currently facing. This is not a distant dream for the future. Polestar Precept shows a preview of future vehicles and shows that we rely on innovations to further reduce our environmental impact. ”Minimalist, sporty, clear lines. Polestar Precept give a foretaste of future Polestar models. The proportions of the vehicle define its shape based on a reserved surface and the focus on aerodynamic efficiency. A 3,1-meter wheelbase gives the breathtaking four-door Grand Tourer a very low, slim silhouette and still creates enough space for a large battery and at the same time enough legroom and headroom for passengers in the front area.

Front with so-called Polestar SmartZone

The radiator grille is replaced by the so-called Polestar SmartZone and symbolizes a shift from breathing to seeing. An area that is superfluous in electric vehicles, which previously only served to guide air to the coolers of the internal combustion engine, is now the center for safety sensors and driver assistance functions. Two radar sensors and a high-resolution camera are located behind a transparent panel for intelligent hardware. The LIDAR pod mounted on the glass roof enables an optimal view to improve the driver assistance systems. The striking LED headlights have also been further developed: Polestar reinterprets Thor's hammer and relies on separate elements, which gives the vehicle a dynamic, robotic look and reflects the brand. Precept has an integrated front wing above the SmartZone, which accelerates the airflow over the long bonnet. This allows air to stick to the surface earlier. This improves the aerodynamic efficiency and range of the vehicle. At the rear, the wide tail light extends over the entire width of the vehicle down to the vertical, aerodynamic wings - another feature that underlines the light design.

no classic side mirrors on the Precept

Conventional side mirrors are replaced by cameras, each of which extends outwards along an aerodynamic arm. Inside, the traditional rearview mirror gives way to a digital screen. The picture is taken by a wide-angle camera at the rear of the vehicle. Due to the lack of a conventional rear window, the glass roof of the Polestar Precept extends behind the rear seat. The tailgate itself has been designed with a larger opening and higher hinges to facilitate access. Polestar is convinced that working with experts will accelerate further development and thus be able to provide customers with the best technologies. The interior of Precept is sustainable, based on new materials and processes. Likewise, the development of the user interface builds on current partnerships, for example with Google, and guarantees the concentration of technical expertise in various areas in the vehicle.

new modern interior materials

Sustainable new interior materials combine modern high-tech luxury with reduced environmental impact. Bcomp's composite materials for interior linings and backrests, which are made from flax, offer significant improvements compared to conventional materials, including a weight saving of up to 50% and a reduction in the amount of plastics cut by up to 80%. The seats are knitted from recycled PET bottles in 3D, the upholstery and headrests from recycled cork vinyl, while the carpets are made from recycled fishing nets. These elements, combined with digital avant-garde, define a new premium luxury that exceeds the previous conventions of leather, wood and chrome.

15-inch touchscreen and 12,5-inch driver display

The next generation of the Android-based infotainment system is based on the close cooperation between Polestar and Google. An enlarged 15-inch touchscreen in the middle complements the 12,5-inch driver display. Both are connected by an illuminated frame that covers the entire interior. A striking highlight: the characteristic Polestar emblem hovers holographically in a solid piece of Swedish crystal between the headrests of the rear seats. The display supports the further development of a personalized and dynamic digital interface and also contains a number of intelligent sensors. Eye tracking captures the driver's gaze and controls the content of the various screens accordingly. Proximity sensors also improve the usability of the middle display while driving.

from March 5 to 15, 2020 at the Geneva Motor Show

Maximilian Missoni, Head of Design at Polestar, explains: “The aesthetics of Polestar Precept are based on the latest technology and not on historical references in the automotive industry. At Polestar, we see technology as a pioneer, as a tool to solve our society's problems, and we have translated this attitude into new design principles. The combination of sustainable materials and intelligent high-tech systems opens a completely new chapter in avant-garde luxury design and clearly shows in which direction Polestar is moving. ”Polestar will be Precept from March 5 to 15, 2020 at the Geneva Motor Show at the booth Present 5253 in Hall 5.
