New shine for Porsche classics - Porsche Classic Restoration!

The history of the brand plays just as important a role for Porsche as the focus on the future. That's why last year, for the second time in a row, Porsche centers across Canada took part in the Porsche Classic Restoration Competition. The challenge is to restore any classic Porsche model and return it to its original condition in all aspects. The aim of the competition is to make the competence and commitment of the individual centers visible and at the same time to weld together both the individual teams and the entire Porsche family in Canada.

Porsche Classic Restoration

Twelve Canadian centers participated in the recent event, restoring 356 coupes and cabriolets as well as a variety of air-cooled 911 models. The vehicles not only had to be procured and brought back into top shape, everything had to be carefully documented and published via various media channels as part of the overall competition. At the end of the allotted time frame, all restored cars were sent to the Porsche Parts and Distribution Center in Mississauga, Ontario - also a training center for Porsche technicians. There, the vehicles were judged by an expert jury made up of representatives from the Canada region of the Porsche Club of America and from Porsche Cars Canada, including CEO Marc Ouayoun, based on the aspects of technical restoration, overall condition, marketing and media communication.

"This project aims to showcase the classic know-how and restoration expertise of our world-class Porsche centers in Canada“, explains the head of the competition Rajat Thukral, National After Sales Business Manager of Porsche Cars Canada. "It also fostered a passion for the brand and its rich heritage among the teams."

Classic know-how and restoration expertise

Different concepts were used in the competition – from the demanding restoration of a 356 1964 B coupé to the decision to breathe new life into a high-mileage 993. This Polar Silver 911 Carrera was originally sold by Porsche Pfaff in the mid-1990s and had 200.000 kilometers on the clock at the time of its restoration.

Other unique vehicles included a 930 Turbo painted a bold blue by the Porsche Center London according to the 'Paint To Sample' option and a long bonnet 911 E from 1969, in which Mark Motors Porsche more than competed 2200 working hours had invested. As a tribute to the factory's rallying activities in the mid-1980s, the eye-catching 911 Safari was presented by Porsche Center Vancouver, complete with a powerful chassis lift and tartan interior by Porsche Exclusive.

In an extremely complex process, every element of the vehicles was evaluated - from engine and transmission conversions to exhaust systems, wiring, lighting, brakes and bodywork. The competition was held in two categories: the restorations of the 356 were judged separately from those of the 911.

Three 356 models in competition

"It was very exciting to have three 356 models in competitionsays Alexander Pretsch, After Sales Director at Porsche Cars Canada. "Restoring an older vehicle isn't easy, and the older it gets, the harder things can get. Once you've tackled them, you never know what you're going to come across. I found it fascinating to see what our Porsche centers were capable of."

In the end, the Porsche Center Saskatchewan was awarded the rare matching hardtop for their outstanding restoration of a matching numbers 356 1960 B Cabriolet. In the 911 category, first prize went to the Porsche Center Lauzon for its impressive work on a similarly unusual 911 1986 Targa CE (Commemorative Edition), built when 911 production reached a quarter of a million. "This car feels almost new and drives like a dream," says Thukral of the limited edition G-Series. "The attention to detail, evident both inside and out, is incredible."

After the Porsche Center North Toronto was recognized for its achievement in the Marketing and Communications category and the remarkable Safari Homage in Vancouver received the Passion Award, only one overall winner remained to be chosen. After hours of careful deliberation, the Porsche Center Saskatchewan won the competition for its exceptional work on the 356 B – a car Ouayoun describes as “an immaculate time capsule”.

"This competition is really an opportunity for us to demonstrate the skills, quality and know-how of our craftsmen and technicians who have put a lot of energy and passion into these projects' Ouayoun continued. "Looking at the results, we can only be proud of the amazing skills we have in the Porsche network. We would like to thank all our Porsche Centers who are bringing history back to life with these vehicles."
