“Porsche Unseen” - unpublished concept vehicles!

Under the title “Porsche Unseen”, Porsche is publishing previously secret design studies from the years 2005 to 2019 for the first time. The sports car manufacturer is showing 15 spectacular vehicle visions. The early studies cover the segments “Spin-Offs”, “Little Rebels”, “Hypercars” and “What's next?”. Porsche thus grants an exclusive insight into its design process - from the first drawing to the finished series model. “The timeless and innovative design of our sports cars inspires people all over the world,” says Oliver Blume, CEO of Porsche AG. "Visionary concept studies form the basis for this success: They are the pool of ideas for the Porsche design of tomorrow and combine our strong tradition with pioneering future technologies."

The Porsche Newsroom exclusively presents the previously unpublished design studies in a series of articles. The web TV format 911: Magazin also dedicates an article to selected studies and, together with Porsche chief designer Michael Mauer, illuminates the connection between studies and current series models. The book “Porsche Unseen” is published today by Delius Klasing for fans of the brand. Interested readers can get a detailed look behind the scenes at Style Porsche. Some of the studies can later be admired live: the Porsche Museum will integrate a selection of the models into the exhibition in 2021.

The design process starts with a sketch. In the next step, this is visualized as a 3D model. As soon as an idea is to be further developed, small models on a scale of 1: 3 and finally hard models on a scale of 1: 1 follow. "The virtual world is the first step, but it is precisely the unexpected models that you have to experience in reality in order to understand how small, big or surprisingly proportioned a car is," says Michael Mauer, Head of Style Porsche. In contrast to the development of a series model, in which several models with different styling themes are always developed, in vision projects only one vision model is initially created as the protagonist of the central idea.

Porsche only has one design studio

“Porsche deliberately only operates a single design studio - in close proximity to development,” says Mauer. “Weissach is our epicenter. Instead of opening Advanced Design Studios in the distant metropolises of North America and Asia, our designers from all over the world come to Porsche in Weissach to create the latest series sports cars and automotive visions at the heart of the brand. ”More than 120 designers work in the Porsche Design Studio , Experts in interiors, exteriors, colors and materials, model makers, modellers and studio engineers.

The design studies: On a journey of thought into the future of mobility: “Our visions are not about getting every car on the road. It's about creating spaces of opportunity and establishing a relationship with the future, "says Michael Mauer, referring to the design process, and adds:" There are two ways to develop as a brand: Either you improve your products from the present, step by step Step. In this process it is difficult to be really innovative. Or you let your creativity run free. The idea is to mentally jump into the day after tomorrow and from there move backwards back into tomorrow. "

On this basis, the product and brand identity is created at Porsche, which shapes and secures the appearance of all models in the long term. The design language for future models evolves from the long-term vision. The overriding aim is to combine the Porsche design DNA with the latest vehicle technology. On the one hand, this ensures the innovative ability of future Porsche models and, on the other hand, an evolutionary link to the rich history. A look at some examples:

The Porsche 919 Street (2017; clay model on a scale of 1: 1) was created on the basis of the technology of the Porsche 919 Hybrid and promised to make the overwhelming driving experience of the LMP1 racing car also possible for private individuals. Under the cover are the carbon monocoque and the 900 hp hybrid racing drive, which have repeatedly helped the Porsche 919 to victory at Le Mans. The dimensions and the wheelbase were also identical to the racing car.

With its purist, reduced cockpit, the characteristic radiator grille above the mid-engine, the red graphic accents and the fins on the rear, the compact Porsche Vision Spyder (2019; hard model in 1: 1 scale) is reminiscent of the Porsche 550-1500 RS Spyder from 1954 At the same time, the study served to further develop Porsche's design identity and as a store of ideas for future details - such as the highly modern roll bar.

The Porsche Vision “Racing Service” (2018; hard model on a 1: 1 scale) is the free interpretation of a family-friendly room concept for up to six people. The design team designed a futuristic "space glider" with exciting proportions. The study shows how the Porsche design DNA with the characteristic modeling of the surfaces can be transferred to a vehicle segment unknown to the brand. In the interior, passengers can expect a comfortable and modular travel cabin. The driver takes a seat in a central driver's seat. The fully electric drive technology is located in the underbody. The fellow travelers can enjoy a spacious space and travel experience paired with typical Porsche flair.

The book “Porsche Unseen” is now available in stores under the ISBN number 978-3-667-11980-3. The design studies are presented in detail on 328 pages with impressive photos by Stefan Bogner and informative texts by Jan Karl Baedeker. It is published by Delius Klasing Verlag and is also available in the Porsche Museum shop.
