Today at the ID. Meeting in Locarno (Switzerland) for the first time ID.5 GTX "Xcite" the public. The vehicle is a one-off construction by trainees from the three Volkswagen locations in Saxony, Zwickau, Dresden and Chemnitz. For a year, 14 of the best young people worked on their project under expert guidance in order to implement the knowledge they had acquired with great creativity and responsibility - from the first design draft to the adaptation of the body and paintwork to the technical commissioning. In addition to the aspect of sustainability, for example through vegan leather in the interior, this time the focus is on the idea of holistic mobility. The ID.5 GTX "Xcite" already has the electric skateboard for the last few meters to the destination on board as standard. It is now the eighth vehicle project of this type since 2014.
Show car ID.5 GTX “Xcite”
Robert Janssen, Managing Director Technology & Logistics at Volkswagen Sachsen: "Fully electric and a real Saxon: With the ID.5 GTX 'Xcite', young people prove what technical understanding and automotive passion can produce. Like its predecessors, this show car symbolizes the high-quality training and expertise at Volkswagen Sachsen.” Jens Rothe, Chairman of the General Works Council at Volkswagen Sachsen: “The ID.5 'Xcite' is a real eye-catcher. Kudos to the entire project team. The product impressively shows the performance of our young specialists. At Volkswagen in Saxony we are currently training a total of 573 trainees and students in a practical group. For us, high-quality training is not only necessary, but also part of our social responsibility.”
Duncan Loibl, 19 years old, electronics engineer for automation technology: "This project was something very special for me: getting results together as a team, many different disciplines and working under real conditions such as budgeting, planning and implementation. Due to Corona and the temporary delivery bottlenecks, we had to overcome some hurdles together as a team. We are all the more proud of the car and the knowledge we have gained. I am grateful for the experience and opportunity to work with the ID.5 GTX "Xcite"
to have been there.”Master performance from youngsters: The annual show car from Volkswagen Sachsen
The "Xcite" show car is technically based on the production version of the ID.5 GTX with an 82 kWh battery and a maximum speed of 180 km/h. From this, the trainees formed their young vision. They contributed their technical skills in mechanics, body work and painting to the design and conversion. The basis for this was precise planning, intensive coordination and independent work. The external changes include, for example, extensive work on the body. The wheel arches were changed, the sills were widened and the front and rear bumpers were adjusted. The car features a combination of matte and glossy paintwork from Lamborghini and Volkswagen color palettes. The custom-made 22-inch aluminum forged wheels are powder-coated and ensure an impressive appearance.
Alcantara, but also vegan leather, was used to design the interior in order to make a statement for sustainability. Among other things, the cockpit, steering wheel, door panels and headliner were refined. The seats are a real eye-catcher: the saddlery developed a complete, continuous pattern from the ID honeycomb. It is embroidered on the seat centers and door panels. The project logo was embroidered on the front headrests. This consists of the ID lettering and an eight - suitable for the number of previous vehicle projects. For the acoustics, a self-constructed digital sound system from the brands "Gladen", "Musway" and "Bang & Olufsen" with ten speakers, a subwoofer and a total output of 2000 watts is on board. A highlight is hidden in the trunk: The "Teamgee H5" electric skateboard is the perfect companion for the last few meters from the parking lot to the destination.
trainees have been building show cars since 2014
With the exception of the Corona year 2020, trainees from the three Saxon locations have been converting a model made in Zwickau every year since 2014. Five experienced project sponsors accompany the young men and women who independently build the vehicle from concept to implementation. The 14 young men and women in this year's project are in the second and third year of their apprenticeships as construction mechanics, process mechanics for coating technology, vehicle painters, vehicle mechatronics technicians, electronics technicians for automation technology, warehouse logistics specialists and mechatronics technicians. Since the Zwickau vehicle plant has only been producing fully electric models, the ID. Meet the big stage for the fully electric show cars in Switzerland. The first converted, fully electric show car in 2021 was an ID.2021.
