Esports Community 2021 - BMW Motorsport SIM Racing!

The first race of the season of the BMW SIM GT Cup took place on January 13th on the iRacing simulation platform. In the virtual BMW M8 GTE, the best sim racers in the world competed against each other in a 120-minute race at the “Daytona International Speedway”. The Redline team celebrated a double victory: Gianni Vecchio and Jonas Wallmeier (both GER) won in a dramatic photo finish with a 0,048 second lead over the duo of Formula 1 driver Max Verstappen (NED) and former DTM driver Dani Juncadella (ESP ). With their success, Vecchio and Wallmeier secured the first firm starting positions for the season finale at BMW SIM Live 2021 as well as prize money of 2.400 US dollars. Third place behind Verstappen and Juncadella went to the final winners of the last two BMW SIM Live events, Joshua Rogers (AUS) and his Coanda Simsport team-mate Mitchell deJong (USA). The next race of the BMW SIM GT Cup will take place on March 7th on the track in Suzuka. The day after, the second season of the BMW SIM M2 CS Racing Cup starts on the rFactor 2 platform with a race on the Imola circuit.

BMW Motorsport SIM Racing Teams.

BMW Motorsport SIM Racing has been cooperating with the four major sim racing teams BS + COMPETITION, G2021 Esports, Team Redline and Williams Esports since the beginning of 2. As official BMW Motorsport SIM Racing Teams, they already took part in numerous races in January and celebrated successes in virtual BMW racing cars.

iRacing 24h Daytona.

On 23/24 January 24 BMW Motorsport SIM Racing teams met for the first time in one race at the iRacing Special 8h Daytona. In the GTE class, BMW Team BS + COMPETITION, BMW Team Redline and BMW Team GB, which is used by Williams Esports, each field a BMW M24 GTE. After 8 hours, Ryan Barneveld (NED), Nathan Lewis and Phillippe Denes (both USA) from BMW Team BS + COMPETITION crossed the finish line in third place and made it onto the podium. BMW Team Redline and BMW Team GB came in fifth and sixth in the GTE class. The winning team from Triple A Esports was also on the road in a BMW MXNUMX GTE.

The big winners in the GTD class were Laurin Heinrich, Kay Kaschube and Nils Koch (all GER). The trio from BMW Team BS + COMPETITION triumphed in the BMW Bank M4 GT3 and thus achieved the first major victory for a BMW Motorsport SIM Racing Team in the still young season. The next iRacing Special is the 12h Bathurst on February 27th.

Formula E: Accelerate.

On January 28th, BMW Team Redline and BMW Team GB made their first appearance in the virtual Formula E. In “Formula E: Accelerate”, Kevin Siggy (SLO) and Petar Brljak (CRO) started on the course in the BMW iFE.21 in New York. Siggy, who won the “ABB Formula E Race at Home Challenge” last year, again showed a strong performance and made it onto the podium in third place. He also secured a championship point for the fastest race lap. Brljak crossed the finish line in 18th place after a difficult race. Round 2 is on February 4th.

Digital Nürburgring long-distance series.

BMW Team BS + COMPETITION and BMW Team GB finished third and fourth in the Digital Nürburgring Endurance Series (DNLS) at the official iRacing premiere of the virtual BMW M16 GT4 on January 3. Victory went to the MAHLE RACING TEAM and thus also to a BMW M4 GT3. In second place, BS + COMPETITION made the four-fold victory for the BMW M4 GT3 perfect with its second vehicle. The next race of the season will take place on February 20th.

SimGrid Endurance Cup.

BMW Team G2 Esports started the SimGrid Endurance Cup on January 9th on the Assetto Corsa Competizione platform. Nils Naujoks and Arthur Kammerer (both GER) showed good pace in the BMW M6 GT3 at the 4h Zolder, but lost a lot of time due to a technical problem in the simulation in the pits and missed the top ten. The next race is on February 6th with the 4h Paul Ricard.

Interview with Laurin Heinrich, Kay Kaschube and Nils Koch.

Congratulations on the first victory of a BMW Motorsport SIM Racing Team at the iRacing 24h Daytona! How did the race go from your point of view?

Laurin Heinrich: “To be honest, it was a pretty quiet race - luckily! We were able to drive through our speed consistently and without the slightest problem. That was the key to victory in the end. In addition, with Kay and Nils, I had two teammates whom I could rely on one hundred percent. "

Kay Kaschube: “We did our job really well, but I didn't find it quite as relaxed as Laurin. (laughs) Since we started in the slowest of the three classes, we had to be fully concentrated from the first to the last lap and have our eyes permanently in the rearview mirror. There were many incidents when cars from faster classes were lapped. Of course, we absolutely wanted to avoid that here. "

What is your impression of the new virtual BMW M4 GT3 after the first races?

Heinrich: “I really enjoy the car! It is very stable on the brakes, which is a difference to the BMW Z4 GT3. It is also very reliable and handles the tires very well. In my opinion, the driving experience in the BMW M4 GT3 is almost in the direction of the BMW M8 GTE, which I really like. "

Nils Koch: “I think the BMW M4 GT3 is very neutral. You feel safe and subjectively you're not pushing your limits as much as in the BMW Z4 GT3. That means you can concentrate even more on setting consistently fast lap times. The tires held up very well, especially in Daytona. We were able to complete three stints on one set of tires without any problems. "

Kaschube: “I also noticed that the set-up window for the BMW M4 GT3 has become significantly larger. You now have a lot more options for tuning that you can test. "

What does it mean to you to be at the start as the official BMW Motorsport SIM Racing Team?

Koch: “We are proud to be able to contest one of the absolute highlight races on the iRacing calendar as an official BMW team, as we did recently at the 24h Daytona. The fact that we also won that is of course a fantastic story. "

Heinrich: “That's right. During the race you always give it your all, that was the case before. But the feeling of being able to represent a manufacturer like BMW in the really big races is great. "

Kaschube: “Perhaps one more thing about our BMW partner teams: We meet up with the Redline and Williams Esports teams very often during races at iRacing. Of course we're still competitors on the track and we all want to win, but I have the impression that a common spirit is developing among the BMW Motorsport SIM Racing Teams. I am very excited to see how this will continue. "

BMW M4 GT3 Fanatec steering wheel.

In December 2020, BMW Motorsport SIM Racing presented a spectacular world premiere as part of its digital BMW SIM Live Event, which raises the technology transfer between real and virtual racing to a completely new level: the steering wheel developed together with SIM hardware manufacturer Fanatec for the BMW M4 GT3. The revolutionary thing about it: It is the first of its kind that works in both the racing car and the simulator.

While the steering wheel is in use in all test drives with the real BMW M4 GT3 racing vehicle and is constantly being optimized, it should go on sale for sim racers in the second quarter of 2021. Parallel to the start of sales by Fanatec, a film documentary about the development of the hybrid steering wheel, which unites the worlds of real and digital racing, is also being produced. We will inform you about the exact price and further details in one of the upcoming BMW SIM News.
