It's been almost three years since we discussed the spectacular VW New Beetle pickup conversions from Smyth Performance reported. And the company that also makes other vehicles like one Dodge Charger converted to a pickup, has now published another successful idea. And a tailor-made one at that camping trailer. And of course it doesn't hang on any pickup, but on a converted VW Beetle. The result is a mini camping trailer Unique, which is even fully functional. However, in order for the system to fit, a suitable mini fifth wheel had to be installed on the loading area. The magazine motor1.com contacted owner Paul McCormick to find out more about the pop-up camper, which is loud motor1.com completely rebuilt from the ground up. McCormick says: "I received the Beetle kit a few years ago and while I was building it a friend sent me one gooseneck coupling given, which I later remembered. So I figured I'd build a foldable fifth wheel camper. The result is a caravan with a Queen size bed in the middle."
VW Beetle with camping trailer
According to the motor1.com However, the project was much more complicated than just building a massive frame around a truck bed. Since there is no other Beetle campers with such a hitch, McCormick was on his own to find solutions. The biggest challenge was that weight and aerodynamics within the scope of the Beetle's possibilities and, in addition, to make the connections from the roof to the sides watertight. McCormick continues: "I knew I wanted a maximum of 0,68 tons for the trailer, but I didn't know how much the hitch weight could be". "I put forward the theory that around 90 kg should be enough to correctly distribute the weight over all four wheels of the Beetle and to be able to pull the trailer safely. And I didn't want the trailer's roofline to be higher than the Beetle's, and the width is the same too. And it handles amazingly well - not a hint of sway or roll, and we've been to places with gusts of over 110 mph."
Air conditioning and heating are included
In order for the weight to actually stay below the targeted 680 kilograms, McCormick had to do anything Water tanks renounce on board. With the roof open, the queen-size bed can be folded into a Sofa to a sitting area be transformed at the front of the trailer. Next is a small one Table in the middle, with a small kitchen area on the back velvet Stove and something Storage space included. And the camper has one too Heating and even one Air conditioningthat are powered by an integrated rechargeable battery. Incidentally, the towing vehicle is a 2006 VW Beetle TDI with a 1,9-liter diesel engine and manual transmission. He has one on the rear axle leveling because of the trailer and all in all, it is not only a visually very successful, but also an extremely efficient camper.
