Special conversion from back then: the Jaguar XJR-S Monaco!

The Jaguar XJS is an eye-catcher these days, especially due to its rather conservative styling. No ill-considered design escapades, no crazy lines, simply stylish and present. But that is by no means to everyone's taste. For those who didn't like the "boring" look, there were already various tuning options back then. An example? We gave this unique specimen to aeronautical engineer Paul Bailey as "XJR-S Monaco" Thanks to. Founder of Bristol based PBB Designs, Bailey is not only an engineer but primarily an enthusiast of the car tuning category. The idea of completely changing the character of the XJS first came about in his head and then it was put on paper. And we do it particularly carefully and with an eye for technical details.

Jaguar XJR-S Monaco

As befits an engineer, Bailey only drew what was realistically feasible. He saw no point in creating a design that ultimately couldn't be built. "I wanted my car to be exactly as I drew it' Bailey once said in an interview with Jaguar Quarterly. And his idea was successfully implemented in 1990. The result was the XJR-S Monaco, an XJS with a completely new hood and headlights, with a completely different apron and with widened wheel arches all around.

The rear apron is also completely new. Most of the components are made from lightweight fiberglass. And more or less it cannot be denied that the shape of the headlights and the contours of the body are very reminiscent of the later XK8. In total, PBB Designs created 12 such Monaco vehicles, two of which are said to be in the Sultan of Brunei's garage.

The bright red example from the pictures is a prototype that was used as a show and press vehicle at the time. Over the years, the car has changed owners and its key data several times, because the built-in 6-liter V12 now delivers a whopping 398 hp thanks to tuning and turns the XJS into an XJR-S. The exceptional specimen stands by Silverstone Auctions for sale and the expected price is around £18-24.000. If we get more information, there is of course an update for this report.
