Alfa Romeo GT Junior - the history

The Alfa Romeo Giulia sedan presented in 1962 and the coupé that followed in 1963 with the addition of GT were enthusiastically received by the public. Both models developed into bestsellers and icons of the brand. The basis for economic success was one of the first applications of the low-cost platform strategy. The sedan, the coupé known as “Bertone” among classic car fans around the world, and the rare station wagon and convertible versions largely shared the technology.

In 1966, Alfa Romeo rounded off the coupé series - for which the name suffix Giulia was dropped from 1968 - with reduced equipment and a 1,3-liter engine. The four-cylinder engine, largely made of light metal, with two overhead camshafts in the version with a displacement of 1.290 cubic centimeters, which had previously also been introduced for the sedan, served as the drive. The output of 89 hp at 5.500 tours and the rich torque made sporty driving performance possible. The top speed of over 170 km / h was proof of this.

Alfa Romeo GT 1300 Junior complemented the GT 1600 Sprint coupé variants

The Alfa Romeo GT 1300 Junior supplemented the coupé variants GT 1600 Sprint, GT Veloce with 1.750 cubic centimeter or later 2,0 liter engine and GTA, the legendary lightweight version as a homologation model for motorsport. From 1971 a GT junior variant with a 1,6-liter engine was also offered. The aim of the Alfa Romeo GT 1300 Junior was to appeal to a younger audience looking for an exceptional and exclusive car at a reasonable cost to purchase and operate. The market launch was accompanied by a fresh communication campaign. It showed success: by the end of production in 1976, Alfa Romeo had sold almost 92.000 coupés with the GT Junior logo.
