If the school can only be reached via unpaved roads, normal school buses reach their limits in a few seconds. But now there is for this "rather rare scenario“An alternative to the normal school bus from the Czech Republic. Curtain up for that Torsus Praetorian school bus. The Czech truck conversion company Torsus has thus designed an ultimate school bus that is particularly difficult to move off-road. The basis is our own Praetorian bus model and the aim is to use the special school bus variant to bring up to 35 children safely to school even under the most difficult conditions. The vehicle was of course not completely developed in-house. It is based on an 8,70 meter long 4 × 4 off-road vehicle with a MAN chassis and a 213 kW / 290 PS strong MAN engine tinkers under the hood.
Ground clearance of up to 40 centimeters
The vehicle has a ground clearance of up to 40 centimeters and due to the large off-road tires from Michelin, not only tire damage is rather unusual, even particularly difficult terrain does not pose any major problems for the vehicle. The cabin, and in particular the seats, are designed for the needs of children and are equipped, for example, with height-adjustable seat belts. Optional extras are a folding armrest and a hip support on the aisle side. In addition to the eye-catching paint job with the “School Bus” note, there are also various additional lights on the outside, a ram protection for the front if desired, a powerful underride guard is installed and the windows are slightly darkened all around. While a “normal” Praetorian bus is available from 166.000 euros, the price for the Torsus Praetorian school bus variant is not yet known. The TORSUS Praetorian is available in Germany from ALL4BUS GmbH.
The Torsus Praetorian Overland is also based on MAN
In principle, the school bus conversion can be compared with the Torsus Praetorian Overland. Not quite as extensive, but the principle works. The radical off-road motorhome has 20-inch (approx. 51 cm) large, coarse-tread tires in size 386/85 and is a maximum of 117 km / h. He has a fording depth of 700 mm and the Approach angle at the front is 32 degrees and at the rear 26 degrees. The interior of the camper is of course different from that of the school bus. There are 150 watt solar panels for the power supply with battery management, there are fresh and process water tanks, a hot water system with gas or electricity and a fully-fledged kitchenette. Even a washing machine, its own pantry and numerous hanging and base units are built into the Torsus Praetorian Overland. Further highlights are a bathroom with shower, toilet and washbasin, a lockable bedroom with a double bed and another bed in the form of a large seating area.
Satellite TV and audio system with sound system
The entertainment on board is secured with satellite TV and an audio system with sound system and outside the Praetorian carries practical bicycle racks at the rear, various light hatches on the roof and a dark-glazed window front. Torsus specializes in producing the 4 × 4 chassis with various superstructures and so the MAN base is also available as a police and military vehicle, as an expedition vehicle or as a surveillance model.
