Hydrogen drive in a powerhouse: the Toyota GR Yaris H2!

The Toyota GR Yaris is now presented with an alternative drive concept (Combined fuel consumption according to WLTP 8,2 l / 100 km, combined CO₂ emissions according to WLTP 186 g / km): The little model athlete is now driving up a study with an experimental, hydrogen-powered internal combustion engine. This means that the concept vehicle is almost emission-free. While the Toyota Mirai fuel cell sedan (Fuel consumption according to WLTP: hydrogen combined 0,89-0,79 kg / 100 km; Combined power consumption 0 kWh / 100 km; Combined CO₂ emissions according to WLTP 0 g / km) Converts hydrogen into electrical energy, the energy carrier is used in the GR Yaris (Combined fuel consumption according to WLTP 8,2 l / 100 km, combined CO₂ emissions according to WLTP 186 g / km) as an alternative fuel for the combustion engine.

The hydrogen itself, the high-pressure tanks and the refueling process are identical to those of the family sedan. The 1,6-liter in-line three-cylinder G16E-GTS with turbocharging, which is also used in the production model of the small sports car, works under the bonnet of the GR Yaris Concept that has now been presented. A modified fuel and injection system enables operation with hydrogen.

Hydrogen-powered combustion engines are still in an early development and testing phase at Toyota, which only started in 2017. On the way to market maturity, the company is testing the technology in motorsport, among other things: a hydrogen-powered Corolla Sport, for example, has already performed well in Japanese racing series - with almost zero tailpipe emissions. As part of the Super Taikyu Series, the racing car even completed the demanding 24-hour race in Fuji.

"We have taken the first step to make our hydrogen-powered engine competitive and to continuously develop it further"Said Akio Toyoda, President of Toyota Motor Corporation. "I think things will be a little different in ten years. People look back and see how we accepted this great challenge and enjoyed every moment.“In addition to the positive environmental effects, hydrogen offers many advantages, especially in racing: Since it burns faster than gasoline, this leads to excellent responsiveness. At the same time, the hydrogen engines - also with the appropriate acoustic and sensory accompaniment - offer the driving pleasure that is typical for combustion engines.

Toyota is pursuing ambitious sustainability goals on the road to CO₂ neutrality. Hydrogen produced “green” plays a crucial role in reducing emissions. The fuel cell technology can be used not only in the car and truck sector, but also in ship, rail and air traffic as well as for industrial purposes, for example for forklifts. Mobile generators powered by hydrogen also improve the environmental balance. With the continuous further development and improvement of its hydrogen engine technologies in motorsport, Toyota offers another alternative and paves the way to a hydrogen-based society.
