Innovative surface materials from Continental - designed for the future of mobility

It's like stepping into another world: Well-regulated music wafts through the interior as a matter of course. Light-dampened glass panes ensure cozy privacy. Pleasant, clear lighting effects provide orientation. Smooth and no-frills surfaces in natural and light colors adorn seats, lounge chairs and cushions, floors, doors and sky. Everything is perfectly coordinated in this vehicle interior. A room that invites you to linger and promises comfort. This converted VW T2 Bulli with the name AMBIENC3 is only "retro" from the outside, inside it gives a glimpse into the future. Visitors to the Automotive Interior Expo can experience the new concept vehicle from Continental up close from November 9th to 11th, 2021 in Stuttgart at booth A4250 / Hall 4.

The holistic concept of the AMBIENC3 is the so-called 3rd Space, a third room that combines driving, working and relaxing in the vehicle interior and offers design concepts that are precisely tailored to the respective application. What makes the concept vehicle so special, however, are the surface materials from Continental. "With their properties, our surfaces support driving, working and relaxing. The areas are separated from one another by color, design and function," says Ralf Imbery, Head of Innovation, Transformation and Design at Continental's surface experts.

Renewable, sustainable, natural

The topic of sustainability plays a major role: "Our idea was to develop a vehicle that mainly consists of sustainable materials - based on natural and renewable raw materials, while consistently saving wood and real leather," emphasizes Imbery. “The development of authentic surfaces and valuable products is very important to us. We also support our customers and suppliers in their efforts to become more sustainable. ”This is why the surface specialists at Continental are increasingly using recycled or upcycled materials as well as low-emission and low-pollutant materials for the interior. Light surfaces also help to save vehicle weight. As a result, energy consumption drops, emissions are further reduced and electric vehicles have a longer range.

Im AMBIENCEC3 The staynu and laif technologies from Continental are widely used. The staynu technology ensures that the material stays and looks like new longer - and thus conserves resources. The laif technology ensures that the material is permeable to air and water vapor. This results in particular comfort, impressive softness and special acoustic properties.

Autonomous driving drives surface trends

The automotive industry has long agreed: the future is called "autonomous driving". And it is precisely in this regard that Continental has created the perfect interior with the AMBIENC3 and its 3rd Space concept. Because: Those who no longer mainly drive and have to constantly watch the traffic have time to relax or work.

"When designing, we always have a holistic design concept in mind: Because: Good design should not only be sustainable, but also natural and inspiring - based on the forms of nature and consistently use-oriented," says Imbery. That also means: it has to be intuitive so that everything works without buttons and switches being permanently visible. For Continental, this is not a utopia, but a concept that could soon go into series production - not least thanks to "Shy Technology", which only lets buttons appear when they are needed.

Car icon meets tomorrow's interior

As far as the exterior of the AMBIENC3 is concerned, luckily everything remains the same. The car icon VW Bulli shines with a retro look - and here we come full circle: In the AMBIENC3, retro meets future. A motto that Continental stands for in its anniversary year: 150 years in the service of mobility form the basis for the next decades.

N3XT: The collection shows exemplary future designs against the background of the three megatrends natural elements, humans and cyberspace.

In addition to the AMBIENC3, Continental will be showing the trend book and the associated N3XT (read: Next Three) collection, which will present exemplary future designs against the background of the three megatrends natural elements, people and cyberspace. The idea behind "natural elements" is to get closer to nature again, to gain inspiration from natural materials and products. “People” is about the influence of different cultures, social trends and individual lifestyle. "Cyberspace" contains innovative, futuristic-looking materials with sometimes complex technical structures.

The design collection also takes living space concepts as a model

The Panel Films Vol. D form a complete design collection for vehicle interiors. Continental's design experts are constantly working to ensure that their customers feel comfortable in their vehicle. They also use new design concepts for the living area as a source of inspiration, which they then apply to surface materials for the automotive industry. All of these surface concepts can be seen at the Automotive Interior Expo in Stuttgart.
