In cooperation with VW Motorsport GmbH, VW Motorsport in South Africa has built two brand new VW Golf 8 GTI (MK8) racing vehicles in Germany. On July 2, VW Motorsport South Africa (due to COVID-19) presented the vehicles virtually and Stefan Kotze from Speedhunters magazine (speedhunters.com / stefankotzephoto) got her in front of the lens at the Zwartkops Raceway near Pretoria. So far, the Jetta has been used for the local Global Touring Cars (GTC) series VW Motorsport. However, since the model was discontinued as a right-hand drive vehicle, something new had to be found. The Golf 8 GTI as a racing car. Both vehicles have a new chrome-moly-tube chassis installed that is stiffer and lighter than that of the predecessor. There is a heavily modified body with large air openings, V-mount intercooler, fender flares all around, front splitter and everything a typical racing car needs.

So also a powerful fixed GT rear wing made of carbon. The exhaust system is installed on the left side of the GTi and the Dunlop slicks are pulled on ultra-light 18-inch rims with central locking. Behind this is a Brembo brake system with large letters all around, which are cooled on the front axle by special air channels in the apron. The fully adjustable undercarriage comes from Öhlins and is essentially taken from the earlier Jetta racing cars from VW Motorsport South Africa. And as far as we know, the vehicles are some with rear-wheel drive according to the racing specifications of the racing series. The engine is a heavily tuned 2.0L EA888, which probably delivers around 500 hp and 600 Nm of torque. Vehicles in the GTC series have a Life Racing control unit, a 6-speed Albins manual transmission with paddle shifting, as is also used in the Australian Supercars series. In the cabin there is a special roll cage, a Sparco Circuit QRT seat with Sparco belt and the steering wheel has a quick release hub. All typical racing cars!
