Hard to believe but today the team of Top Gear a video published on YouTube and Facebook shows how Andy Wallace drove a fabulous 304.77 mph (490,47 km / h) with a Bugatti Chiron on the Ehra-Lessien test track. And the record attempt was already a month ago. The high-speed drive started on August 2nd, 2019 and we wonder how it is possible to keep the record secret for an entire month. A Chiron Sport special model "110 ans Bugatti" was driven, which is a bit lighter (18 kilograms) and has a firmer chassis and other changes compared to the "normal" Chiron. Costs? At least a net price of 2,65 million euros (gross: 3,15 million euros)!

The performance is officially unchanged during sport. So there are 16 cylinders and eight liters displacement plus 1500 PS and maximum torque of 1600 Nm. Although it is said that the copy of the record run modified is (longtail, lowering, no spoiler), but "apparently" there were no changes to the performance. Instead, the Chiron was lowered, the rear wing and the air brakes were removed, the front passenger seat removed and a roll bar installed. Bugatti therefore rightly speaks of “a near-series prototype of a derivative of the Chiron”. And TÜV Saar has even officially confirmed the record speed. This means that the Chiron shows its true potential for the first time and thus also a Königsegg Agera RS (Maximum 457,49 km/h) should keep in check. Whether that also applies to Koenigsegg Jesko (2020) is questionable.

even 515 km / h would have been feasible

And the record of the 2. August 2019 could even have been topped. Le Mans winner and Bugatti test driver Andy Wallace would have been even faster with the purpose built Chiron in Nevada. Instead of 304,7 mph (490,4 km / h), 1000 km / h would have been possible on a test track in 515 meters altitude in Nevada. Since there, the security standards for such record attempts but lower, one has decided against it. The track in Ehra-Lessien is 50 meters above sea level and in contrast to Nevada, the air density with 1013,25 Hectopascal (hPa) is significantly higher here than at about 890 hPa in Nevada.

Ps. But it's actually only a “real” record for the Bugatti brand internal, Although the top speed was certified by the TÜV, a new record as the fastest production car in the world but came not conditions. The used hypersport was namely a pre-production vehicle and thus a prototype. If you want to officially have the record but MUST run a production vehicle. And further, two runs MUST take place in both directions. The Chiron drove the 490,48 km / h but only in one direction. Thus, the officially fastest production car continues to be the 1.360 PS strong Koenigsegg Agera RS. He drove on the 4. November 2017 with an average speed of 447,19 km / h.
