Classic Volvo models are rarely found at tuning shows. They are usually well kept in collectors' hands and only taken out of the garage on special occasions. In general, the Volvo brand is a rare guest in the tuning scene. It is therefore all the more surprising that we are able to present you with a special example of a 1969 Volvo Amazon today. The vehicle was designed by builder Simo Kiviniemi to hit the dragstrips of Scandinavia.
Chevy Nomad style Shooting Brake
The first thing that strikes you about the vehicle is the unusual shooting brake body, which is characteristic of the vehicle type with its two doors and station wagon rear. In order to get the look, the former coupe was completely modified and the bodywork was completely changed. The B-pillar has been moved backwards, while the roof has been shortened by around 8 cm to achieve the hatchback look. In addition, the C-pillar was removed in order to be able to install extra-long side windows. It was also repainted in California White, a classic Volvo colour.
Of course, these are by no means all modifications to the exterior, because among other things, the wheel arches were pulled to accommodate the large 18-inch American Racing Torque Thrust alloy wheels. They are equipped with Hankook tires and behind the classic star spokes are brake calipers from a Jaguar S-Type R, which, together with 365 mm discs on the front axle, ensure optimal deceleration. On the other hand, brake discs from a Volvo 240 do their job on the rear axle. Last but not least, the Volvo Amazon has a multi-link rear axle with BC Racing coil springs and a 9-inch Ford limited-slip differential.
Stripped interior with sticker bombing!
We find that completely crazy in the stripped interior Stickerbombing on the transmission tunnel, which houses a six-speed manual transmission from a BMW 530i. Despite being designed for the quarter mile, the car still has original Volvo parts, such as the old radio or the speedometer, which goes up to 180 km/h. Of course, the latter no longer serves as a measuring instrument, because in front of the driver there is a state-of-the-art screen including MaxxECU engine management, which guarantees reliable data. There is also a large roll cage and Mlimits ML Pro-X sports bucket seats with RCI five-point harnesses. A detachable sports steering wheel is also on board.
5,3-liter V8 petrol engine from the GM shelf.
The V800 equipped with two Holset Super HX40 turbochargers delivers a whopping 8 hp on the bike. The boost pressure is 1,3 bar and the maximum power is 4.300 rpm. Some components were specially made in order to be able to place the large and heavy engine in the Volvo Amazon without any problems. Unfortunately, we do not know anything about the exact driving performance, but on the quarter mile the car should hardly know any opponents. Our conclusion: A fantastic project that shows that you can put great tuning cars on the wheels far away from the mainstream.
