A Volvo with ballistic protection through steel, aramid and bulletproof glass? Is there! Because recently Volvo has presented its two large SUVs XC60 and XC90 with armor and ballistic protection. Such a vehicle can either be used privately or it can be used to transport VIPs or as an emergency vehicle in crisis areas. Anyone can buy it. The XC60 and XC90 as Armored vehicle the high security standards of Light armored cars. This is a safety class that offers ballistic protection according to the US American standard NIJ-IIIA. This protection class can be roughly equated with the German VPAM VR4 directive, which of course involves a lot of effort.

The XC60 and XC90 have 18 millimeter thick bulletproof glass, there is plenty of steel and - as already mentioned - aramid is also used. In addition to the vehicle roof, the front, sides and rear are reinforced so that the vehicles can withstand various shots and attacks in an emergency. Volvo uses reinforced laminated glass for all windows and the rear windows are even tinted. This not only improves privacy, it also increases protection. However, since the curb weight increases by approx. 400 kg, a reinforced brake system and a modified chassis are used. But you can't see it optically. The special protection vehicles can hardly be distinguished from the series models without armor.

Incidentally, the equipment is based on the version Registration, which brings electrically adjustable front seats with memory function, a classy ambient light, various sun blinds for the rear side windows and chic 20-inch alloy wheels. The silk-matt radiator grille and the various chrome applications on the sills are also part of it. A B6 four-cylinder petrol engine with a mild hybrid system, which generates an impressive 2 hp and 300 Newton meters of torque from a 420-liter displacement, ensures a befitting drive. With an eight-speed automatic, the power comes to the customer as an optional equipment package at a price of plus € 46.400 for the special protection equipment.
