In an unusual combination of design and engineering, Jo, the owner of Jo's Fab Lab, has created a modern VW Beetle pickup based on a BMW E46 chassis. What started as a necessity - to build something new out of two crashed cars - has evolved into a unique vehicle that not only works on paper, but drives on the road every day. Jo stood in front of a BMW E46 Touring with front damage and a VW Beetle with engine damage. Instead of taking the vehicles to the scrap yard, he saw an opportunity to realize a project for a modern Beetle pickup. The longer wheelbase of the BMW E46 Touring offered the perfect basis for the loading area!
VW Beetle pickup with BMW chassis
In a complex process, the Beetle was cut in half and the BMW stripped. Despite the profound changes, important elements of the BMW were retained, including the chassis, dashboard and instrument panel. Surprisingly, the VW Beetle steering wheel works great on the BMW dashboard. Under the hood of the Beetle there is now a powerful BMW in-line six-cylinder coupled to an M3 sports exhaust system. And Jo's creativity even went beyond the combination of VW and BMW. He was inspired by a Ford F-150 and designed the pickup truck bed accordingly. The rear lights are from a tenth generation F-150 and the rear fenders are reminiscent of the F-150 Styleside.
the design is even halfway coherent
Other international influences include the panorama roof of a Peugeot 206 and the lower part of the front bumper of a 2014 Porsche Cayman S. Despite the diverse influences from different vehicles, the design of the finished vehicle is surprisingly consistent. Incidentally, Jo not only uses the Beetle pickup as a show car, but also in daily use. He has already used the vehicle several times for long-distance journeys from England to Wales and Scotland. Jo's Fab Lab has proven that with a little creativity, technical finesse and an eye for design, the seemingly impossible becomes possible: a VW Beetle pickup based on BMW that combines international charm with everyday practicality. A real one for us Frankenstein vehicle!
Don't worry, of course that was far from being the case when it came to auto / auto tuning. Our magazine still has tens of thousands other tuning reports in stock. Do you want to see them all?
