Announced a month ago, the VW Crafter / MAN TGE is as Terrastorm torso Modification of the Czech company Torsus is now officially unveiled. What a statement for an all-terrain van based on the VW Crafter that other companies could build in a similar way, right? The van will be available from autumn at a price of at least 57.461 euros. Incidentally, the company from Prague has already built the “Torsus Praetorian Overland” (Fig. 2: vehicle in the middle), which is being created as a radical off-road motorhome based on MAN. The 13,5-ton coarse tunnel bus, however, plays in a completely different league and is almost non-existent in this country. The Torsus Terrastorm is different. You want to reach a wider audience with him.
Basis: VW Crafter or MAN TGE
As already mentioned, the basis is provided by the VW Crafter or the technically identical MAN TGE. And after the renovation, the Terrastorm should be the "most powerful 4 × 4 minibus in the world" his. Torsus builds the Terrastorm in the two available all-wheel drive versions of the Crafter with 140 and 176 hp and also takes over its six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission. And the structure is also based on the existing offer. The Terrastorm will be available as a van for transport, as a bus for passenger transport or as a variant with various special bodies. In addition to a glassed-in bus or a parcel transporter, the company underpins the variety of options with a conversion to an ambulance for difficult missions away from paved slopes.

And so that things can go ahead reliably in the outback, Torsus relies on parts supplied by the Australian chassis specialists from "Ironman" in combination with Bilstein B6 shock absorbers at the front. On the other hand, there is a lift on the rear axle by means of an additional spring leaf from Ironman and optionally Profender Dakar dampers from Ironman can be installed for the rear axle. The result is a ground clearance of 290 millimeters and the fording depth of the standard version should be an impressive 690 millimeters. If you order another “option package”, it should even be able to be increased to 820 millimeters. In addition to all-wheel drive with rear-axle differential lock, every Torsus bus and van has a complete conversion package for the body with a new front apron - with integrated winch, various underrun protection plates and side steps.

The steps act as sill protection and the glazed bus variant even has a roof rack, a massive front bumper, additional headlights, a spare wheel carrier and a practical rear ladder. Incidentally, the Terrastorm is only available as a 6-meter-long panel van with a 3,64-meter wheelbase and, according to Torsus, all repairs and maintenance work can be carried out in the service centers for VW and MAN commercial vehicles. But are the key data already ensuring that “the world's most off-road transporter? Can the guys from delta4x4, Vansports & Co not too? Only a test will be able to show that.
