We wanted to know what the cheapest option for us is to carry out an oil change in our editorial vehicle, VW Golf 1.6tdi 4Motion. One criterion was of course to get the full amount of oil (4,75 l) but we didn't want to fill up with an oil that was not VW approved. We then decided on the Leprinxol Synth Longlife III 5W-30 which, according to VW standard 504 00/507 00, is also allowed in our 300.000 series, which has now run 6 km. There was also a new oil filter and here we opted for the Mann Filter HU 7008 Z oil filter. We ordered both components from Amazon and while the oil filter cost € 9,39, 5l of oil cost only € 19,99. Together that makes 29,38 € and that can be seen for an oil change!

Tip: This is how you properly dispose of used oil!

For us, such an inexpensive alternative also includes the fastest variant, and for the first time in this vehicle it was not a good idea to not drain the oil in the classic way but to pump it out using the dipstick using a small pump. The whole thing was done in about 30-45 minutes and including changing the oil filter, this work can be carried out by almost any layperson. We have listed the most important steps for you below and if you also want to change the oil yourself, you are welcome to use our instructions for help. However, we would like to expressly point out that we do not assume any guarantee or warranty for the following instructions. You yourself are responsible for any damage and if you are not sure you should go to a specialist workshop.

With one of these universal oil filter wrench tool Incidentally, you can easily remove almost any oil filter.

If you have the opportunity to park the car a bit downhill, this is certainly useful because it ensures that the engine oil in the front of the oil pan, and thus in the vicinity of the oil dipstick accumulates.

With this pump we suck off the oil via the dipstick and deliver it directly into an old canister. Before you start you should remember to let the engine warm up, so the oil has operating temperature and is not as viscous and much easier to pump out than when it is cold.

The first step should be that you remove the plastic engine cover and this is completely without tools in which you just pull it.

To change the oil filter you need nothing more than a conventional nut in size 32 and an extension for the ratchet. Then used to turn to the left and thus you screwed the complete oil filter with bracket out of his device.

Pull out the dipstick and insert into the opening then the hose of the pump until you feel that you have reached the wall of the oil sump.

Then it can start and you can supply the pump with electricity (in our case, this is done via the vehicle battery). Then insert the other end of the hose into a container suitable for taking in the complete amount of oil (just 5 l).

For us, the entire process took about 10 minutes and is super convenient!

A good way to check if the used oil has been almost completely removed is that you reintroduce the dipstick and pull out if there is oil left at the top. If there is no oil left you can assume that over 95% were pumped out.

Once the oil is completely pumped out, you can, as already mentioned, remove the oil filter and replace it with the new one. You can remove the filter by fixing the holding device with one hand and pulling off the oil filter with the other hand (preferably with a cloth). In reverse order you put the new oil filter on the bracket and please pay attention to the marking that shows which part of the oil filter should be facing upwards.

Corresponding seals are supplied with the new oil filter, and even if the existing ones still look good, you should definitely use the new seals. Then reinstall the oil filter in the opposite direction and tighten with the torque specified on the bracket. Then the new oil can be poured in and you should stop filling about half a liter before the prescribed amount and then orient yourself on the oil dipstick to find the correct amount. Here, of course, you should make sure that the car is no longer downhill but on a level surface. And you should also keep in mind that it can take a while until the last drop of oil has reached the bottom of the oil pan.

⚠ Reset oil service in the video ⬇

Finally, we have created for you a short video on how you can reset the service of your vehicle. This option would have to be the same for VW Golf / Polo, Caddy, Passat and possibly also the T5 bus. But we are not sure and it was done as you know on a VW Golf MK6.
