Dynamic, strong and with pure aerodynamics: With today's world premiere of the concept vehicle ID. AERO in China gives Volkswagen a preview of the brand's first global all-electric sedan. The future model is to be offered in the upper middle-class sedan segment. Its progressive, stylish and aerodynamic design allows for a generous amount of space inside. The production version for China is expected to be launched in the second half of 2023. Also for 2023, Volkswagen plans to start production of a European series model in Emden.
VW ID. AERO
“With the show car ID. AERO we give a preview of the next member of the ID. Family. A car with an emotional and at the same time very aerodynamic design, a range of more than 600 kilometers, exceptional space and a premium interior,” says Ralf Brandstätter, Chief Executive Officer of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand. “With our ACCELERATE strategy, we are driving the electrification of our Model range moving forward at full speed. After the ID.4, this model will be our next global car for the regions of Europe, China and the USA.”

The concept vehicle is almost five meters long and was designed to be aerodynamic. Its elegantly sloping coupé-style roof helps achieve an excellent drag coefficient of 0,23. The modular electric drive matrix (MEB) from Volkswagen also enables short overhangs, a long wheelbase and an exceptionally spacious interior. The ID AERO has a powerful lithium-ion battery with a net energy content of 77 kWh. Through the interaction of efficient drive and the very good aerodynamic properties, the ID. AERO long-distance ranges of up to 620 kilometers (WLTP).
E-offensive in China: With the close-to-production study of the ID. AERO, Volkswagen is accelerating its electric offensive in China as part of its ACCELERATE strategy. After the ID.3, ID.4 and ID.6, the production version of the ID. AERO will already be the fourth all-electric model series in China, which is expected to be available in the second half of 2023. There will be two variants there – one for each Volkswagen joint venture. With the help of the regional strategy, Volkswagen wants to become the leading supplier of sustainable vehicles in China. By 2030, at least every second vehicle sold in China should be an electric vehicle.
Volkswagen is driving the electrification offensive worldwide on the Way to ZERO. The production version of the ID. AERO is therefore to be the new top model of the ID. family will be offered globally in the future – in addition to China, also in Europe and North America.
Elegant design characterized by aerodynamics, all-round light bar and metallic paintwork.
The design of the ID. AERO transfers the design language of the ID. family for the first time on a sedan in the upper middle class segment. The wind flows optimally over the aerodynamically designed front and roof sections. The slightly retracted tail with spoiler lip calms the air flow. The sporty 22-inch two-tone wheels are designed in the style of a turbine and integrated flush into the wheel arches. Classic door handles are replaced by illuminated touch surfaces that further reduce air resistance. In the upper part of the silhouette, the distinctive tornado line and the backward sloping design of the roof characterize the design. Above the tornado line, the powerful shoulder section of the ID. AERO. The lines make the electric sedan look flatter and give it dynamism.
The study ID is painted. AERO in Polar Light Blue Metallic – a light metallic shade whose color pigments create a golden shimmer when the light hits it right. The roof is finished in high-gloss black to contrast with the bodywork.
The front is embossed with the ID. Family typically designed honeycomb structures ("ID. Honeycombs"). It is split horizontally in two in the bumper and defines the style of the ID. AERO. Unmistakable makes the ID. AERO also has an all-round, narrow strip of light to the left and right of the illuminated VW logo and above the innovative IQ.LIGHT - LED matrix headlights across the front section into the fenders and side sections. The light strip is visually continued with interruptions to the rear end. The dominant rear features a striking dark light stripe and honeycomb LED taillight clusters that exude exclusivity.
The ID AERO shows the diversity of the MEB.
The ID AERO demonstrates the flexibility of Volkswagen's all-electric MEB architecture, which can be customized for vehicles of different shapes and sizes. From the compact crossover to SUVs, a minibus to a spacious limousine - the MEB can be used across all segments. With the ID. AERO enables the MEB to enter the ID. family in the midsize sedan segment. In addition, the MEB fully exploits the possibilities of e-mobility, which enable large ranges, maximum digital networking and over-the-air update capability.
Production of the European version in Emden.
The production version of the ID. AERO for Europe is expected to roll off the assembly line at the Emden plant in 2023. With the volume production of electric vehicles, Emden, as one of the first Volkswagen plants of this type in Lower Saxony, will make a significant contribution to electrifying the model range and reducing the CO₂ emissions of the entire new vehicle fleet.
